Great video! 🙌 When using a maroon scuff pad or 400 grit on a car that already has clear, do you have to sand down to the base coat before re base coating, or can you spray base coat over a scuffed clear coat?
@markhamze1543 жыл бұрын
What they are showing you applies to ovens only! If you have hardener and you apply a chick coat like that. You will get heaps of runs. As a back yard spray painter. You will have tro apply hardener and spray the first coat like a dust coat. Then wait till paint is tacky. The second coat should be 90% cover and wait till tacky. Third coat should be full cover and the clear is painted the same way. He has a spray booth. He applies one thick coat and bake for 20 min at 65c. Then leave over night. Spraying with hardener is like painting hot chocolate. It runs all over the place!
@cdman79763 жыл бұрын
@@markhamze154 Yeah, I ended up using sandpaper as well so it sands quicker. I base coated, then added clear. Light, medium, then heavy coat. There was some orange peel, but wet sanded then buffed. Came out smooth👌

In turned out satisfactory but I want the outside to look better then my interior job though very nice it wouldn't pass for outside paint in my personal opinion. I have learned a ton on your video's. So far I have seem to do things correctly. I recently have had a hot rod and restoration shop offer to spray the outside of my car in there booth and sprayed by one of there techs. @@popz5518 I painted with a 30 gallon for years. It works to a point. Just not enough volume. Had to stop a lot to let the pressure build up. Just to inconsistent with the pressure drops. Had to get a little creative. I hooked up a 60 gallon tank I had and it would pump in to that and give me some added volume. I also found that with a straight 30 gallon it would form tons of moisture from it running constantly. A big help in the end was using an LVLP spray gun.

One thing I’d like you to cover someday (especially when we are talking about big jobs like this) is how to switch cups in mid paint job. How much can you mix up at once. Activated base coats vs non-activated base coats and estimating how much paint a particular job will take. Also, I’m in love with Pedro’s booth! Man......wouldn’t that be awesome.
@PaintSociety3 жыл бұрын
Activated base isn’t going to quick on you as quick as you think. All depends on color for coverage. Generally 3-4 ounces per one coat of color per panel. You want to have enough clear mixed up before hand

I notice a lot of these "how to" for amateurs videos use urethane base coat, clear coat, I would suggest a single stage urethane for first timers since the gun set up and spray technique is basically the same for clear and it gives you the same result in less time. Also single stages are more forgiving in hiding minor imperfections in the body work, meaning scratches and dirt. I've been painting for nearly forty years and started out painting with lacquer single stage, which is even more forgiving than enamels because of its fast drying times which allows you to quickly correct any mistakes. Also, why didn't you really show off your results at the end.

Such a great video. Nice job! When I was a teenager I would read articles about painting cars with many coatings of lacquer paint and with considerable sanding of each layer. I don’t recall mention of clear coat then so perhaps it hadn’t been invented yet. The thing I found quite interesting in your video is that it seems that one needn’t have a glossy, polished finish on the base coat and instead all of the shine comes from the clear coat. I have a 2002 Tundra that has a patch (about 8” diameter) on the hood where the clear coat is gone,leaving a very dull base coat and I’ve trying to decide whether to polish the old base coat (to make it shinier) prior to application of the clear coat. If you any words of wisdom for me I’d appreciate hearing them. I should add that I’m not trying to make my Tundra hood look beautiful. Rather, I’m trying to protect the original base coat from further damage. Thanks again to you and Pedro! - Jim

First time ever in my life. Painting my 2009 Camry. I just spent hours on hours .. making mistakes. Used 300 grit to sand my car down. First mistake: Bought a 6 gal compressor, very tough to do it with that small a compressor. Second mistake: Without applying a sealer, went straight to paint. And the paint wont stick. Third mistake: Thanks to the small compressor, clear coat came up in big droplets since there wasn't enough pressure. Forth mistake: Sanded after the clear coat when I should have just polished and packed the bags. Fifth mistake: Why did I even put my hands on it since I have zero experience. Sigh! Now I do not know where to start and what to do. Out of money and don't have $2000 to blow up on a nice paint job from a pro. Life's tough!

Brian is the best teacher out there for paint! And I'm not too sure about Pedro using his hands and not a tack rag. You can put oils from your hand onto the fleshly cleaned surface. Very good video nice job. But I would like to point out about the paint mixing. The toners in your paint formula are not based on manufacturer specs, but rather more specific to the variant of your paint code. There may be dozens of variants for any given paint code. So for those of you whom are having paint mixed at a paint mix jobber either have them pick a variant from color chip or have an electro spectrometer reading. This will assure the closest match especially if you are not doing a blend.
