@@PaintSociety I'm on the fence about trying to repaint a two door hatchback myself, vs. getting prep work done seperately before taking to a reputable Maaco or another "less expensive" option, though still wanting the high quality two stage options, and starting with primer and good surfaces, etc. HOW MUCH DO YOU THINK IT WOULD COST ME, ROUGHLY, TO BUY THE EQUIPMENT YOU USED IN THIS VIDEO (THREE SPRAY GUNS, PRIMER, BASE COAT, CLEAR COAT, AS WELL AS VARIOUS SANDING TOOLS). SO LET'S SAY, THE PAINT ASPECT ONCE THE TRIM AND GLASS HAS BEEN REMOVED BODY DENTS AND RUST HAS BEEN REPAIRED AND IT'S READY FOR PRIMER. It may be most economical and practical for me to try to bring a prepped car to a maaco for example. I feel like the results would probably be similar in quality, but at last Maaco people have experience and would be shooting in a professional booth, etc. On the other hand, it would be worthwhile for me to acquire tools if I thought this would be the first of many restorations/ sprays on my own. I have sanded and polished cars before, and sanded orange peel from other cheap paint jobs, but never stripped / surface prepped/ or painted a car (although I do think I'd be good at that if I tried).

Most DIY's have no grasp of the tremendous amount of labor involved in a project of this scale and quality not to mention the material cost involved, this is exactly how it should be done but probably beyond the grasp of the average guy working in his garage, from someone who was a professional painter for over 20 years this is how you do it right.

Very valid points, I created this guide for the do it yourself to give an honest shot of learning everything they need to know about painting and doing it if that’s exactly what they wanted to do, also I gave the disclaimer in the beginning of the video that it might not be worth the cost.

Most DIY'ers are going for "good enough" and don't have the money or time to spend on a show car finish. However, there's great advice in this video that doesn't cost much to follow.

Why so negative? Your comment applies only to people who are not curious and not willing to learn. I overhauled my F350 diesel truck (down to the shortblock - rings were fine) by watching KZbin videos. It runs like a champ now and I saved myself a ton of money. For painting, a spray booth would be nice, but I will simply buy a cheap portable unit. Or make one. Very light body work required, but I am willing to sand and remove body parts. This isn't rockert science. Just requires lots of elbow grease and time. If you mess up the paint, remove or sand, and start over 😜

Hey Brian another great video as always! Just want to say that I personally would have chosen Matrix MS-52 clear on this job because it is absolutely crystal clear like glass! And zero yellowish tint! Easy to color sand soon after it has fully dried and all you need is 2 full coats and your done. I'm not sure if you have tried that specific clear yet at your shop or what you guys mostly use there so I thought I'd mention it in case. Also, as you know most people have no idea what it takes to paint a car unfortunately! Tons of time and effort goes into it and how expensive materials are alone, especially doing a full restoration! And when you give them a price for total, they think you are robbing them! Lol. And also, I agree with you when it comes to sealer, although it's not always necessary to use, depending on the situation, but you are really stretching out your paint job for sure when you use it!👍💯 And like you say, learning never stops, like time and experience continues accumulating and we always learn something from each other! Question for you! Have you ever tried or occasionally do slightly thin out your body filler like max 5%? If not, you'd be surprised how nice and thin it spreads long way on the panel!👍Saving you time and material when sanding it! Let me know, Take care.❤

So nice to see such work and the final result is awesome... top notch work... keep going Brian with such information. But by the way I have two questions... What is, more or less, the final thickness of this paint job as it started from bare metal? Way too much above the factory values?! Do you make a water wash of the surfaces each time after using the scuff pads/sanding or you really only use a moisted towel to pick the dust and then use the needed rag tag? Because otherwise you will wet the protection plastics and so on! Keep going! 😀

As 20 year painter I loved this video, looks beautiful I do have to ask tho ,did you end up spraying the rims? I think it would pol off even more great work man,I'd love to collaborating with you one day ,I feel like people really need to be shown all the hard work and stages it takes to get a paint job done , I feel like of people had a better understanding of how hard and time consuming it is to paint and an understanding of the industry because me and you both know it's not always chocolates and roses in these companies there are good ones and then ones that only care for money and have no respect for 5s and being clean of your environment and booth we deal with chemicals all day and we don't even get hazard pay ,one actual fact is that in the whole population of the world only 2% does what we do professionally, you have to really love what you do and do it with passion to honestly say your a true painter not everyone realizes that,I respect you love for the DIY but I personally feel like painting a car or anything that has to do with a hvlp gun and solvents should be done professionals were not certifiedfor nothing , I'm not gonna go buy a plane and then fly it myself to try save money or because I'm bored lol no I'm gonna hire a pilot or whatever pro thats needed there are people that do that for a living I feel like some jobs have there professionals for a reason it truly pays to be educated In what you do especially when you make a living off it ,it's ypur name your life your work that's the beauty of painting anyways great job brother keep up the good work

I found it interesting that you wet sand the primer and dry sand clear. I've always been the opposite. I like to dry sand primer with mesh abrasives because they are much less prone to clogging, and as you mentioned, it’s easier to see what effect you're having on the surface. I always wet sand before polish as I feel the water creates a nice slip, keeps dust down, helps prevent pig tails, and seems cleaner. But that right there is exactly why I love watching this stuff. It never hurts to keep an open mind and see how other people do it. Great videos!

And when doing smart repair on small damage area. Do you sand damage area, then fill and sand. Then 1000 grit entire panel. Then prime damaged area, then base coat damage area but flick it so abit goes on other panel. Then clear coat it all?

I prefer never to blend clear. Its much easier to clear the whole panel for a longer lasting repair

Great review! 👍🏼 what kind of sealer do you recommend for the price? Didn’t catch the name on the video or on the list in description

Sealer is tough to find online to suggest. We use colorbuild but you can reduce that sane epoxy primer by 20 percent as a sealer

On the 2k primer do you need to scuff it in between each coat? I want to paint cars but I currently paint boats and use a sealer you don’t have to sand at all. If you have dirt I’ve noticed it’s better to sand it out after base.

Does the base or clear mess up your eyes or should a painter wear eye protection? Isnt there isocynates you get exposed to or something like that?

Hey Brian thanks for the videos I tackled my 2011 Silverado repaint job. Single stage black 3 coats with aero pro a610 some spots turned out very glossy others had some serious orange peel wonder what the reason?

Just have to keep those passes as even as possible and watch the paint go on. Try dropping pressure 2-3 lbs

Awesome video. Have you ever tried using the epoxy primer as a sealer by reducing it 15 to 20%? If so, just wondering the results, pros & cons, etc. Thanks!

I want to tackle a huge DIY. Respraying my 2007 Chevrolet Suburban. The clear coat has started to peel on the roof, hood, front bumper and other areas. I want to scuff and spray with the same color. Can I just sand the entire vehicle with one grit sandpaper? What is the ideal grit to use? I want to get more color on it and top it with a glossier clear coat.

Thanks! I've used the Omni but not shopline. Had a little trouble getting silver to be even. Didn't used to have trouble with chroma base or other flavors, probably just my poor technique 😞

Hi Brian, I have a couple of quick questions. My Mustang was painted about two year ago and has been sitting in my garage since as I have been working on it. I want to repaint the car since it has gotten a few dings and some nicks. I am also going to seal it before I paint it. What grit sand paper should I use to scuff the clear? After I scuff the paint, I will expose the dings, etc... should I sand them down to the primer or metal before adding body filler? I am normally getting many automotive questions but this is my first time asking a question because I never really got into the painting process. Lol. Thank you SO much in advance.

It be best to watch as many videos as possible so you can actually see it in person, but generally, you’re gonna sand your clearcoat with 600 and then scuff your dings with let’s say 180, this will create enough of a scratch for light filler on small dings.

Thank you SO much for replying to my question. I know you receive hundreds of questions daily and it can be quite exhausting responding to questions you have already answered in previous videos. I am very meticulous on how I do things that's the main reason I asked. You have MANY videos showing exactly what I need to do. Once again, thank you for your time, replying to my question and the incredible DETAILED videos you have posted throughout the years. Sincerely, Terence
