My tone? 1980’s EVM 12L in a Theil cabinet, SD pick ups, dark glass compressor, MB amp provides the lions share of distortion, Yes, sealed back, tight but massive lo end, (I played bass before I Played guitar) full & forward mids, other pedals are just an alternative color palette, if it’s Jean Luc, (Violin) I use the thru zero flanger, if it’s dark guitar jazz, the speaker rotator & analog delay, brighter jazz or Latin a la Santana? delay alone, mostly neck PU, or both…..but if I wanna rock?, bridge PU, xotic boost or Friedman version of a TS, and or the pitch fork, that’s so if I wanna cop the bass solo, or if I want octave up color. (A Very convincing bass tone!) And a xotic wah for playing funk! 🙂. I tried a celestion, too much color, sounds great in a 4 x 12 tho…..but I’m too old to move one, 😂, all my stuff is attached to a folding 4 wheel tilting luggage carrier, …that I never fold up, I’ve got a van, it’s a 3 piece rig: guitar pedal board and dolly (amp/speaker)🙂 Old man rig🤣 Like JBL’s or Altec’s, EVM is a very flat PA speaker type response, an acquired taste….takes very little power for a lot of volume

I got a mesa-branded 12l and a first-gen sro alnico, I've used both in a variety of open- and closed-back 1x12s, and they never sound bad no matter what you throw at them

@@jasondorsey7110 the SRO, is very sought after, but I’ve never played one, EV’s are very efficient in general, a newer 12L a maybe bit more so, and it’s a flat response speaker, like an Altec, or a JBL, but the JBL is a slightly flabbier lo end and a bit too piercing high end for my taste Altec has a deeper cone stiffer response and smaller dust cap, users include Carlos Santana in his early Boogie amps, and Randy Rhoads user 2 4 x 12 cabs with all Altec’s I bought my EVM 12 L (1980) when I first started playing, I’ve tried the Boogie label celestian, too fizzy I used the same Altec in my other cab, but when I got hotter PU’s it made a peaky sort of response, too loud in certain upper frequencies, so I bought the re-issue EVM 12L, I haven’t a/b’d them, but 2 amps same amp for each cab. I think they sound identical, but at $279, not cheap But it’s certainly my speaker of choice, & long before Joe Bonnamassa or Stevie Ray even, but it’s certainly cool they they use them, affirming my choice.😊

@@jonathanstrand2474 Right on, I think it's the high buy-in that discourages folks from even trying ev's, but sometimes you'll get lucky...I bought a gallien-kreuger bass cab for 50$ at a flea market that turned out to be loaded with an evm15, I guess that's why the cab was so damn heavy lol

@@jasondorsey7110 I also have a 15L and play bass, or used to, excellent bass speaker and the 12’s are too, the 15L is in a 1940’s 1” plywood teardrop style early folded horn, (Klipsch made one too) the cab is cool because the speaker is tilted back about 30 degrees, the idea is you hear both ends of each stroke of the cone, from the front and the back of the cone, so as it moves forward and then also as it goes backward, makes it even more power efficient. 100 watt old tube Ampeg V-4 is more than enough in a mid sized room (17 x 22) with that cab! Glorious tight & slightly gritty bass tone, one reason I decided I’d rather play guitar is the Ampeg sounds really great, but it’s an absurdly heavy amplifier, and not really powerful enough for a loud drummer, I bought a Carvin Stereo Bass head, but as good as it is, it just won’t do what an Ampeg tube head does

Speakers there will be a difference. Pickups not so much.

I agree, BIGGEST factor in sound! It's the FINAL component in the chain!
