The Ghost Dance appeared during a time of desperation for the Native American Indian people. The Ghost Dance started when Paiute shaman Jack Wilson or Wovoka had a vision that if our people would dance and sing we Indians would live again. The Ghost Dance spread throughout the land. In Dec. 1890 the military panicked and massacred innocent Lakota Indian people at Wound Knee while they danced. It is one of the worse incidents in United States history. Judy Trejo - Summit Lake (Tommo Agi) and Walker River (Agi) Paiute and Anita Collins - Shoshone and Walker River Paiute speak about Wovoka. The Round Dance was a traditional Great Basin dance that spread across the land in the form of the Ghost Dance, and is now part of many celebrations. Robbie Robertson sings "Ghost Dance".

The words that stay with me the most are: "you don't stand a chance against my prayers~~you don't stand a chance against my love"~~the genocide of the 1st Americans ~ will always be remembered ~ We are One ~ one cosmic mind ~ one people ~ one love ~ many people know Crow Dog & other organizers of the Ghost Dance~ the spirit never dies ~ God (the Creator) manifests in ways for all to KNOW HIM~Ho

This video is an excellent production about the history and truth of the Wovoka and the "Circle Dance" that came to known as the "Ghost Dance". I highly recommend everyone to watch and listen. He was a "messiah" just like Jesus, who brought hope to the Jews at a time when they were suffering from extreme oppression like the Natives here in the late 1800's.

Actually several versions predated the great Ghost Dance. There was a southern version started by the' Shawnee Prophet' Tenskwatawa around 1800 and adopted by some of the Cherokee and Creek as well as the Kickapoo and Maumee. Versions of this ceremony continued through the 19th century with Wovoka's being the last. Wovoka's father Tavito or Tavibo taught the ghost dance as well. We have not given up hope that good times for us will return. For now we survive

The Ghost Dance was brought to Smohalla, a Wanapum Priest living at P'na on the Columbia River. His main lodge was at Coyote Rapids-you can still see the lodge outlines. He carried this religion all the way to the SW, the Plains states, etc-after he returned from the dead. The story can be found in the book "Drummers and Dreamers" by Click Relander-who knew the last of the Wanapum.

This explains my sadness in hearing the Ghost Dance music (that I remember dancing to in another life.) I think it is needed more than ever in this time era because of the people in power not caring for the land and those in desperate need. My prayers are with you that your people will be able to keep the traditional ways and faith in the Creator (no matter who we call Him.) He is the same for us all. Peace, joy, & prosperity Risa

This is a great video! I am originally from Kanab, I know Piute, Hopi, and Navajo well! I am pro-Native American and always try to get out education of the "first Americans" to those across this country that don't know anything about these great and proud people! We as "Americans" need to educate the younger generation on the true history of these United States, it seems to me that Native American history is no longer taught in school! That is sad...:(

When I see videos like this I think less about the death of indiginous people than I do about the death of the Earth herself. These folks followed a way of life that didn't destroy the Earth in the way we do now. I don't want to return to a primitve life. But I think some day we will have no choice. And when we do return, we will need our Native brothers and sisters to teach us how to survive again. I honor you for holding onto your identity, my brothers and sisters!

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples is an imperative document. The United Nations Declarations on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples has 46 different articles under it. I definitely want to get a copy of it and study it up. It is important to know our rights as a Indigenous people. I know that in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights you have article 25 section 1 which is our right to claim a nationality and you also have the Universal Declaration of Human Rights article 15 section 2 which is, "Nobody shall arbitrary deprived their nationality or be denied the right to change their nationality. It is very important to know the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples is definitely very important for us to know. We also have the Universal Declaration of Human Rights article 18 which is our religious freedom and to practice different religions and beliefs as well as worship.

The Great Ghost Dance of 1890 the Paiute peoples came across the mountains to the East because so many peoples had been dying🦠. The Paiute peoples convinced the Wuksachi & many other tribes surrounding to hold a big new dance @ Eshom Valley. The Great Ghost Dance was performed near a water hole in Eshom Creek. The same dance that the dead people dance in Tihpiknits Pahn (Land of the Dead). Six days & nights of dancing & the win-at-un ( messenger) notified the peoples that the white people were coming to kill them. This ended The Great Ghost Dance.

Everything is a cycle. The Bison are making a comeback, the wolves are once again in the wild and deer in this country are plentiful. It's just a matter of time that this land will be ruled by non-whites again. The white mans era began in 1492 (which led to the fall of the Arabs ruling the world) and is having a run that will soon go the way of the Roman Empire, the Celtic Empire, Egyptian empire, Greek Empire, the British Empire, the Aztec Empire, Mayan Empire, Japanese Empire, Russian Empire, Persian Empire, Prussian Empire..... If we can build an Empire as humans without killing everything/anybody in our path that would be great :0) I'm in !
