Seal twisting is actually getting a lot of attention and experimentation since pservers had broken them. 66% or better uptime on SotC+SoR/SoC is a significant boost to your DPS, let alone 100% if batching works the way we think it does. I'm very excited for Classic in this regard, there's a lot to explore and figure out with the proper implementation of the seal system.

To me it feels like the for every Ret Paladin playing out of his skin each raid, bringing all consumables, speccing right, professioned right, got the BIS for his build, there's a handful of warrior/rogues in good gear, doing a good job and just thrashing them on the charts. The meme of it not being a viable build feels like a misnomer, it's viable just a freaking nightmare to pull off when comparred.

The nice thing about leveling up as a paladin is that you can group up with any one do finish elite quests. Find a warrior? Heal him, find a priest? Tank for him, find a rogue? Do both. Or you can just finish those quests yourself because you have the the best cool downs in game. Its also easy to find dungeon spots.

Playing as a paladin as my first class, I always felt like paladins are the biggest boost to other classes in small groups, whether questing, 5 man dungeons, world pvp randomness. Paladins don't pose a huge threat by themselves, but they make every other class way more potent. And a small group of multiple paladins is probably the hardest to kill.

Team-player/support-class for the win. It's one thing to get good as a rogue or mage doing your little tunnel-vision dps; it's another thing entirely to buff your group and watch over them, throwing in heals or clutch-saves like BoP, LoH, HoJ etc, all the while doing your part as tank or healer or dps. Gonna roll a prot pally for sure.

@William Freeze "Worth playing?" That depends on how you like to play the game. Pallies are excellent 5man tanks and healers, and do decent dps. It's nice being tough and being able to buff and heal, but leveling solo isn't going to be much fun unless you're Ret. I've leveled my pally as prot in Classic, and at times it does suck when you're solo and your damage sucks; but I don't regret it. In fact, once your abilities all come online (essentially once you get down to Holy Shield) you're doing just fine solo. Plus it's nice to tank dungeons, if you're into that. Holler at me if you have any questions.

@William Freeze I'd say that most of the time, paladins are almost too easy of a class, especially since so much is just auto attack. It's easy to go out of mana if you pump all your attacks and judgements, and then you stop and drink.... almost makes it worth it to just activate seal and leave it on for the full 30 seconds and just auto attack, but that's super boring. But when shit hits the fan, having a wide array of utility is fun and knowing when to use the different abilities. Reckoning was fun to play around with, as well as 5 man tanking, mainly because it's a bit harder than other classes, so it makes it a challenge. I also liked being able to kill elite mobs solo, albeit slowly. With blessing of wisdom, seal of wisdom, judgement of wisdom, and occasional healing, a paladin can basically just keep fighting a single mob indefinitely.

Here's the thing about the "mandatory" roles each class has in Classic: They are the "easiest" choices but they aren't the only choices. With a guild willing to work with you and patience almost any spec is viable. In Vanilla my cousin's guild used a Feral Druid, that is right a BEAR TANK up until late into AQ40 and did well. Vanilla raid bosses aren't as hard as people seem to think they are, private servers often get the numbers wrong and we are a lot better players now than we were back then but because we now have a very min/max culture if something isn't 100% "the meta" it is considered trash and doesn't even get a chance to prove itself.

Paladins are not the best healers in TBC pvp and pve. They're pretty much shit in pvp compared to disc and druid. You run 1 hpala in a BC raid. It's not because of the output. It is because of the blessing. Resto shaman is the god of BC healers. CoH priest is more output when they're good, but nothing beats shaman overall.

not many people know this. the current paladin in Classic is different that the overall paladin experience was in Vanilla. In later patches paladins received major buff and fixes to their talents and spells. Before that patch the paladins were really bad. spells and abilities really were badly designed. Seal of commands if I remember correctly when u judged it on stunned target you deal (12) more damage. hammer of justice was a meme. it was called Hammer of miss. you miss people a lot even with +hit chance. Even if you are max level with +hit chance HoJ can miss on level 12 horde characters. Kings used to be Final talent for Ret. ...etc so basically many people who were memeing the paladin as Auto attack /AFK came from that era before the major paladin talents update.

Prot paladins are great with aoe fights. I tanked imps in MC for my guild for about two years. Force reactive disk and a FR set. The warriors hated tanking imps for some reason so they were very happy. Prot pallies are also great tanks for ud strat. You can kill boss before time limit with pre raid gear if you know the dungeon well. I would never ask to tank raid bosses btw, that’s not our strength.

Prot paladin can raid tank but they must outgear the content. Not enough survability. With enough spell power, judgement become a taunt. You will never see a prot paladin in progression but on farm night it's possible. Paladins tanks are for a really weird kind of people who love to complicate the game, used to tank in EQ but I switched to wow, tanking was so much harder there I taugh paladin were good and easy tank until I tried warrior lol

The best part about being a ret paladin is that you aren't amazing at any one thing. You're good at multiple things. I may not be the top dps but I'm not dragging ass either. I've saved group wipes in large pulls by offhealing. You can throw on a sword and board, righteous fury, and help split tank. Paladins are utilitarian. They're meant to be used spread over all roles. Play them that way. Just because you're ret doesn't mean you're just dpsing

Pretty cool vid. I mained a Pally back in Vanilla and yes I ended up being healer for raids. And yes the "clothing" ("armor" would suggest some form of gear protecting you. Cloth does not lol ) was horrendous. But in all honesty I still liked it regardless of being only allowed to heal in the raids. Looking back now I guess I basically chose Pally due to the fantasy/lore, free-ish mount. Also thought back then that a plate wearer using "magic" is super cool. Little did I know :D haha. Still loved my Pally. Saying all this I won't be maining a Pally again this time around for obvious reasons but I will have an alt at some time. "Pallypower" addon FTW!!! :D

Repentance is essentially Paladin's gap closer, used with 8% running speed talent. It may not be as good as intercept or feral charge, but it can work.

I Leveled a protection Paladin from 1 to 60 on a PVP server boy did that take awhile. Believe it or not there's three different tank specs for Paladin and they go deep into each tree. I tanked every five man dungeon, UBRS / LBRS before I quit private server

Paladins have been great to me in all current expansions from TBC, I have enjoyed playing as holy when I got to heal ICC 10man hc solo, all the way to protection where I am now after catalysm. It's been a fun ride, I cant wait to do it again.

Now that is some neat stuff. I didn't even know these items. Now add the Black Grasp of the Destroyer gloves (available on AQ40 release) and you never gonna be oom. Those gloves are probably BIS for Ret Pals too, since you're able to spam Consecration on CD then.

The thing is the sustain, like you said. Paladins are unstoppable. If you blow all your cd not a single class can kill you. Yes, we auto hit, but what are you going to do about it? I am going to build a shockadin (holy/ret) so I can raid heal and go smack some cheeks in wpvp. If we use pots and engineering like the rest, well... the utility becomes too much. I think people are too hung-up on the lack of mortal strike or sinister strikes. Also on the PVE ret (which I don't recommend). In PVP, you can't just stop a good pala. That's my opinion, though. edit: the only thing that can fuck us hard is mana drains

The issue with pal is the mana management when leveling, it's the oposite of priest who has steady dmg. If you play holy or prot you are dealing 0 dmg so you can't exp properly solo (y litterally), if you play ret you'll do huge unreliable bursts at the cost of half your mana bar because for some strange reasons seal + judgement + seal is like already half your mana bar. If you don't spec into heal, it rekts your mana bar too, it's almost better to eat + drink. I stoped around lvl40 leveling a pal in vanilla while with every other classes I instantly found some confort zone and ways to be efficient. Shaman(except their totem quests) are way smoother to level up.

Most of his content is based on raiding, and prot pallys couldn't raid. They simply couldn't generate enough threat. For dungeons they could work fine in a group that understood threat and didn't try pulling from the tank.

@Alistair Bolden that's why I specifically stated in groups that understand threat... If an asshole dps wants to go as hard as possible and not watch his threat, he can die then. That's on him. Most dps have agro dumps or can wait before pouring it on. Going all out isn't required to win every fight... Fighting smarter is better than fighting harder sometimes. I grouped with many prot pallys in vanilla for 5man content.

Thanks for another great vid Punkrat, I'm only gonna see Palies as mortal enemies but this gave a much better perspective of the class than i had before. In some sense I think they are a little similar to feral druids in a way that once you gear up and buff yourself to the teeth the meme specs do become viable. One thing that makes me wonder though, if a warrior / mage puts in the same amount of effort as a top tier ret pala, will they shine even more or there is cap on how good they can become ?

From what I hear Seal of Righteousness MIGHT be better actually if you stack spell power... the stuff on the private serves over estimated it, but it might still be better.

the reason why it was used on private servers is because of reckoning. If you swing 5 times with max stacks, SoC can only proc ONCE. Seal of R procs every time. So if you have on hit items, you're hitting 10 times instead of 6! (I played paladin in priv servers)

After leveling my Paladin to 60, primarily as ret with a dip into holy during my 30’s-40’s. I can say the best leveling spec of the two is ret. although with the right gear, a prot Paladin can aoe grind mobs to an extent very successfully. After getting full AP pre-bis gear and raiding for 4-5 weeks. I realized the impact I brought to the raid was so insignificant that it wasn’t fun anymore. After switching to holy, regearing, and climbing the healing charts, I finally started to get gear that improved my performance more then very slightly. Overall holy is one of the most sought after healers in the game and you won’t be the only one happy to see yourself get geared. Holy all the way.

There is no need to fight so hard to be approved as ret paladin (sadly), because you can go 31 ret and 20 holy and have all musthave holy healing talents (illumination, flash and holy light 12% increase, spiritual focus (mostly for pvp healing)). Just dress up in healing gear and you are good. Finished the raid - go ret gear again. You will miss some strong prot talents (longer freedom duration and bop cd decrease, 3% hit, HoJ cd decrease) for this to happen but it is a price to pay.

I don't think that paladin is the reason that Allience are slightly ahead in raiding. The shaman provides just as much if not significantly more group support. Also, windfury I believe adds up to more total dmg than seal of command.

I was an early adopter of the shockadin play style in tbc and actually it was really fun. I wish you could get shock with reckoning, that would be awesome. If you play a pally and play as holy I would also recommend leveling up an arms warrior because usually guilds are really cool about giving pallys gear on their alts if they are a good healer. I imagine a ret reckoning build would be a really fun time.

from my understanding seal of command only procs off melee swings, not on hit effects. on hit effects are essentially just another da,age source that has a chance to crit. critting procs vengeance, which is a 15 second duration 15% damage increase buff.

Thanks for giving the reckoning/ret build some recognition. It’s really a great build once you get some additional spell damage and healing as you can just play a supportish roll when needed and then just turn on your enemies and stomp them 😂

My main in vanilla on day one was a ret pally. Slow as shite to level. Finally made it to 60 by switching to prot and running 5 mans. Unfortunately at 60, no one wants a prot pally for raiding and no one wants a ret pally for raiding either - or even in 5 mans half the time because the tank is worried you’ll roll on their plate, the casters are worried you’ll roll on spell gear and everyone would rather bring a higher dps class like rogue, mage or hunter. So, I hate to say it, but realistically you’re wasting your time leveling a pally unless you want to heal or tank 5 man dungeons or go ret in pvp. I’m rolling a warrior tank this go-round. I know it’ll be a slow-AF leveling experience but at least at 60 I’ll have two viable uses (tank or dps) instead of one (healing).

Guess this is the most appropriate time to say I mained pally in vanilla. It's true, most people won't ret in raids, but this is how it usually plays out. Heal for a time and get good loot. Gear up ret as well, and eventually moltencore is on or near ez farm. At this point, many guilds will actually allow you or other holy paladins in as ret, especially if they want to gear up new heal paladins. I had great healing and dps gear back in the day, and I loved it. Healing was just good for pve and pvp, and while I did some ret in MC and zul'gurub, the truth is that ret really shines in pvp. Hammer of justice, fat Seal of Command proc/crits, hammer of wrath, bubble etc all make you an absolute nightmare to play against. TLDR: I'd recommend paladin 9/10 times. The 1/10 is if your #1 interest is raiding as a ret paladin. If your sole interest is being a dps ret paladin in raids and you want to just jump into raids as ret, I wouldn't recommend doing that.

Alliance’s raid advantage isn’t just due to Paladins, but also to Human’s +hit rating on swords/maces. A Human Prot Warrior main tank has different BIS gear than all other tanks and can theoretically have the highest threat cap of any other race/class combo. That enables *all* the DPS to do higher dps than otherwise and down bosses faster. Faster kills are safer, less likely to wipe.

The Paladin is my favorite class, by far. It has its ups and downs through the expansions, but I have always had a good time playing as one. Going horde for classic, so no pally, but will be rolling one on another server for fun.

Paladins can support both Meelecleave and Spellcleave in instances. You can play either holypala to get groups easily, or protection to AOE farm solo, or tank groups.. or if you would rather enjoy some dmg and take down one mob faster go ret.

It is true that flash of light is the large majority of a holy paladin's spells used. However if you believe that's all you need to do to "get the job done", then that is always what you will be limited to; just getting the job done. If you ever hope to get to not only getting the job done, but going above, beyond and far past just what is required, then you need to learn the harder part of holy paladin; placing support buff spells at the most needed times. For Example a Blessing of Sacrifice on the tank will get you out of crowd control ensuring that you are still able to heal the tank. A Blessing of Freedom will enable the tank to bypass slows, roots and snares that are being reapplied to him constantly faster than 1 per gcd and would otherwise prevent him from tanking where he needs to. A blessing of protection on a caster that needs to spam aoe without fear of aggro because you'll wipe if those adds don't die quickly. A hammer of justice on a fleeing mob running in the direction of another pack. Switching to concentration aura because you are being destroyed by a pack of hard hitting mobs and your tank doesn't notice, and you'll wipe if you don't spam heal through it. Without those support spells at the perfect time, your 1 button heal strategy will fail. Learn all of your spells and be better than, just get the job done. Pierce impossible, block death, take up the mantle of the greatest you can be and blaze a glorious path for others to follow.

To fix Vanilla WoW Paladin low damage, Blizzard just would need to create one new class exclusive passive ability: Holy Will (Learnable at level 7 for 10 silver) Passive By the Faith in the Holy Light, Paladin Auto Attacks become an Insta Attack with 1 second cooldown, independently of the speed of the equiped weapon.

Private servers core were missing brackets for seal of command causing ret paladins to deal 300x dmg. I think classic currently has some similar issues with multiple seals proccing at the same time so it's only a matter of time before they fix it.

Nice work. PvE info regarding seals I hear is wrong but I don't delve too much into SP ret for raiding, as for PvP the reckoning global-ing is pretty big but it's also deep ret, (not having reckoning) or 2h holy shock, (holy shock + seal of command) that can really help fill out a BG moreso than holy which you accurately put as being less flexible since they're pretty much just heal buff bots, repentance is big for 1v1s and BGs. Holy is unlike ret/reck/2h holy shock which can off-heal but go offensive, too. Another huge problem for playing deep Ret/holy shock is that it requires more skill but you, (tend) to get a lot less reward, whereas reckoning doesn't take much skill but it's really effective if you get those stacks, (which doesn't always happen, especially in a BG where people are more skilled and aware you're reckoning) 1h holy shock sp builds tend to be the same thing, they're 'safe' you have to master less, (1h/2h swapping and swing timing, etc.) and they can be very effective for less skill, most people are not very highly skilled and follow the same meme about "paladins taking no skill" they brought into the wrong idea, they don't understand paladin skill or execute it at a high level as a consequence. I don't knock you too much for not including it in the video, though, this stuff I'm talking about is definitely outside of general purview.

You forgot about if a warrior uses chili and shadow oil and flask of supreme and spell damage potions and whirlwind cleave with melee dps gear and if some lunatic in the party uses shahrams blade for the warriors and rogues. Even if paladins get an increase they aren't getting anywhere near the increase.

I was leaning more toward rogue , but being able to heal and tank opens more possibilities for me to get into groups. Pally really seems like a unique class.
