I collect because my childhood wasn't the greatest. Things like Christmas and my birthday were mostly just days to me. I can count on one hand the times I actually got anything that my mother didn't steal and sell so she could buy herself cigarettes. I missed out on so many things that other kids got to experience, so I'm (maybe in vain, and maybe pathetically) trying to capture some of those things. I'd look in magazines and pamphlets and pine for things like toys, computers and video games. Getting one of those things now is a real treat. No, it won't replace the things I missed out on, but it does bring me a measure of joy, and that's all I really care about. And you can't take that money with you, so I might as well use it for things that bring me that joy now, because I might not be here tomorrow.

This episode was awesome. There is so much negativity online. I love how positive you and Jason have been. So refreshing. Entertainment is to make us happy not frustrated.

Enjoyed hearing two reasonable guys talk about some of the maddening traits of some collectors. Good points were made!

Always great when you and John get together! These shows are brilliant warm-ups for what will inevitably be the greatest show ever... 'The Battle of the Network Stars' episode!

Outstanding episode! I agree with a lot of the points you made about collector culture. It was a joy listening to you recounting your early steps and that Doctor Who was your gateway drug to collecting. For me, while I was trying to get View-Master packets, Hardy Boys, Hot Wheels, or Matchbox in the late 70s, I wasn’t really trying to collect them seriously so much as we understand collecting now. That honor was reserved for Star Trek books-Bantam’s TOS adaptations, Fotonovels, and original novels, Ballantine’s non-fiction and Animated adaptations, and then that followed on into the Pocket Books novels and adaptations beginning with The Motion Picture. Star Trek was my gateway to collecting though it was books by and large. (As much as I loved my Mego McCoy, Andorian, and Kirk, I almost never saw Mego figures anywhere and only remember seeing Trek, never any other Mego line…and I had the utility belt and a couple AMT ships.) Luckily, I mostly could keep up with the Trek book output from stores like the then equivalents of Target, WalMart, or Kroger (or paperback spinner racks in grocery stores), and then I discovered used book stores, which allowed me to fill in a few Trek gaps or discover the likes of Burroughs, Wells, and Verne (the same ones who inspired Roddenberry). Now, I think that what really exploded the toy lines after the Star Wars toys faded after Jedi was the explosion of Trek stuff from Galoob and especially Playmates while supported by all the actively produced Trek series and films. The arrival of Babylon Five, Hercules, and Xena also helped fuel the toyline explosions before Star Wars return with a vengeance.

OUTSTANDING!!!! That was fun through and through. Nerd rage aside I do find myself getting angry at the occasional SW property. I try to keep in mind we have "Rogue One" and very thankful for that.

Great comments on the gatekeeping. They're just awesome toys. It's not curing cancer.

For me, I collect what I couldn’t find back in the day-or in the case of Megos, not knowing about the Apes and other lines (though I’ve never made leap into superheroes)-the Bionic lines, and Space: 1999. I tried to get what I could when Diamond Select made the great reMegos 15 years ago (sales from closing Blockbusters was a big help!), and then I went nutso in Target (Thanks to Marty!!!) in 2018, hitting every store in metro Portland at least once and several a dozen times before the pandemic ended my shopping. (Though unfortunately most of those are in their shopping bags… lol)

However. I think you overlook where women’s collecting has taken them. True, most women don’t get as involved as the hardcore guys. But I’ve seen many of them interested in home decor items, actively shopping on eBay or Whatnot (also postcards and photos, but I digress). But I have seen first hand that many women actively collect dolls- especially baby dolls and fashion dolls (as well as Disney). I found out because an ex still had some of her childhood fashion dolls, and I got swept up into the mania for them as well. Not really into Barbies, she was into the 6.5 inch lines from from the 70s, Topper’s Dawn in the US, and with my help and encouragement (and frankly for several years I was a bigger collector than her, even after we broke up, till the pandemic killed doll shows). There was a lot of 6.5 inch lines-Palitoy’s Pippa in the UK, several Disney lines, and numerous clones and revivals. Books were written about them, and there are annual conventions dedicated to Pippa in Britain and Dawn in the US (loved going to the 2010 conference here in Portland!) Lots of collectors were actively buying and selling dolls and clothes and accessories and play sets, sone were even making their own clothes. From that I saw that other fashion doll lines were actively collected-not just Barbie, but the Mego TV stars of the 70s and Charlie’s Angels dolls-as well as baby dolls and Madame Alexander’s. The ladies aren’t as competitive as the worst guys nor as critical, but some are that way too. It’s probably genetic and cultural influences that makes guys so much worse. (Says the guy with Dawn dolls, clones, boxed Sailor Moon dolls, Megos carded in their bubbles, and 4-5,000 books. lol)😊

I agree with the comment on what's the point of collecting if you can't display your items. I know some will not take figures out of storage so they don't get sun damaged and exposed to the elements, etc.. I suppose many collectors pass on from earth without really enjoying them.

I collect because it reminds me of when I was a kid and my parents where still hear and life was a little more fun with no real responsibility and the memories and the biggest thing is it makes me smile and that what counts and because displaying it is yours and not like things today that stuff has heart and someone's work and art so to me there art pieces now and pices of my childhood to look back on with a big smile.

Does seem like so many fandoms have become spoiled and entitled and it's exhausting to have to sort through to find the people that you'd actually like to talk to. We are in a golden age of geeky content and yet some people are still not happy. I love all the stuff, but I am leery of the fandoms of the stuff.

Genetically, men are hunter/gatherers. We no longer need that skill for food so it's applied elsewhere.
