As a wildlife biologist, I’ll tell you why we capture and release animals. It is the best way to monitor and ensure healthy wildlife populations. They are simply monitoring his health. Usually they will give carnivores a sedative, whether it be analgesia (awake and don’t feel pain) or anesthesia (unconscious and don’t feel pain; used on large carnivores like pumas and bears). Our goal is to make the animal as comfortable as possible, and to make the interaction as short as possible. This is done for population research and is the reason we are able to bring back endangered species (which we as humans caused to go endangered most of the time) back from the brink of extinction.

im obsessed with this docu, the whole thing is even better. first they introduced this guy as "(some uni) science dept, expert at finding pallas cats" then he led them to a boulder, by which narrator said "we found a pallas cat" then it zoomed under a boulder to reveal a fucking pissed cat, the narrator was silent for a long moment then added "with a fierce glare". after this whole "the body is round" stuff, the cat just gave up and laid down and the narration went "he has flattened himself" 😭
