Hi Mr. Smith! My husband and I live in a stone house built in 1856, on a small heavily wooded farm in the geologically gorgeous “Driftless Area” of Southwest Wisconsin. We adore your videos on KZbin, and we’re so proud of our whimsical woodland garden that you inspired us to build behind our home. It’s creating an oasis that has a dramatic impact on our mood and general well-being, and we’re so thankful for your inspiration and education! We dream of coming to see your farm some day. I do spray often. Maybe every two weeks. But it doesn’t take long using an inexpensive pump pressure, continuous sprayer. Works well for me. For deer and rabbits.

Michigan here! Your videos are so wonderfully informative! We counted ten deer hanging out on the farm this Spring, about double our usual number. I don't know if it will work with so many deer, but what I usually do is grate up a couple of bars of Irish Spring soap and sprinkle it around the garden fence edges and hosta; once in Spring and once again in Summer. Apparently the deer dislike the scent because they stay away from it. I only have 4ft and 5ft fences, so the fence is not much of a deterrent for deer. I also like to use the lightweight foil holiday streamers/flag/pennants because they constantly move with any breeze and flash any light source, day or night and make a slight noise. I believe both help deter deer a great deal. Before I did these things they would decimate my vegetable gardens. I still see deer and tracks all around the farm but they avoid the gardens as do the rabbits. Thank you for the videos!

Hello from Asheville, NC. Zone 7a. Thank you for all the wonderful garden wisdom! I love foxglove but I do think it’s toxicity is always worth mentioning. In low doses it is a medicine - digoxin - but even a small amount of plant matter can be lethal to pets or others that ingest it. That’s why the deer leave it alone.

I used to listen to you on PBS when I lived in Virginia. Just to add to your collection of states, I'm now in Vermont close to Lake Champlain, Zone 5/6. In my 50's I finally was able to have a real garden and ended up building shade rock gardens because I had to work with dry shade under large trees/semi-woodland area. Dry shade, especially clay soil, is really hard to deal with. Cinnamon fern worked for me, and heuchera and woolly thyme between stones, in ameliorated soil. And hosta of course. And native northeast woodland plants like arisaema, Solomon's Seal and Mayapple. Stone mulch (pea gravel) pulled it all together. For me the colors of perennials - like Johnson's Blue cranesbill - are more intense in the hours there are shade. Plus shade may allow you to grow mosses! Thank you for this program - I just found you on KZbin.

Some varieties of Daisy are also perennials and do well here.

Ferns do great in dry shade. Columbine. Ajuga rep tans there are a lot. Even if a plant needs moist they don’t need as much as you may think. Mulched shaded soil stays moist underneath for a long time between watering. So what if you water once every 2 weeks? Experiment.

I would show the property and talk about the ponds and pond plants, the waterfall and outcropping rocks, the big creek, the trees, and my container/flowerpots. We built a raised vegetable garden with a tall fence. I hope the deer stay out of it. We just planted 11 large blueberry trees. So much to do on this property! I have ferns and hostas all around the 3 smaller waterfalls. We are having to clean out alot and we may have to start over with nice things after gutting out the old overgrown stuff that got out of hand before we bought this property. Anyway , it will definitely be an adventure! !!!

I live in north central part of North Carolina on 35 acres of woodland terrain where the deer nestle undertaken our pines. We have found Milorganite to be the only product that the deer hate; has withstood the test of time too. We sprinkle our hostages, tulips, day lilies, azaleas, and hydrangeas early spring and once a month thereafter until season ends...the deer leave them along. But if you miss one plant, sure enough they will get it.
@jacobjerny75022 жыл бұрын
Another large group of shade tolerant perennials are palms. Dwarf Palmetto and Saw Palmetto are the two that are native to North America, hardy to zone 6-7 I believe. Another good choice are cycads, although they are overused in my local area. And a good thing for deer is to give them some dummy bushes that they can munch on freely. Deer prefer new growth, and native species, so a fast growing bush is your best bet. Any smooth leaved Holly (Ilex sp.), young oak trees (quercus sp.), and blueberry bushes (vaccinium sp.) are some of their favorites in my area. Also I would avoid raking under any oak or hickory trees on the property, as deer depend on acorns as a food source in the winter.
