"I like the carpet to go with the leaves..." 30:24 - best quote on youtube! Thank you Archive_Archive for uploading the wonderful Alan Whicker. Always loved watching his programmes as a youngster, so a nice trip down memory lane...

Excellent upload, though its left me feeling rather queasy and -funnily enough-thankful for my (relative) poverty.

I like your thinking and it makes me think of the mainland European habit of renting and us English being fortunate to be bred by our ancestors into ownership. 👍 #OurHistory

Whicker is as ridiculous as the folks in Palm Beach. It's why they get on so well. Wonderful archive of a more simple time. Thank you.

Along with so many people, I used to love watching Whicker with the super rich, just because they are so sad and ridiculous - they make me glad to be who I am

Personally I believe some super-rich of today are more ridiculous , phony and worse than these people here in 1977 . That includes some actors and entertainers . A little research on some of these people of today will tell you this .

This is more or less as shown in tv series Palm Royale (wonderful, for most of its length, do watch it.) The rich at play is a hugely entertaining spectacle. And fancy the Duke and Windsor charging $4000 to attend your party. (That is huge, converted in today’s money.) That was new to me.

37:28 George Schraft ... of Schraft CANDY fortune and I do remember that candy company from when I was a kid in the 60s and 70s but haven't seen that name in so long , I'm not sure I spelled it correctly ... Schraff's ? Doubt they are still around . I haven't heard that name in Forever

@@lewissmith3896 Right. This was back in 1977...1977 prices. These days...only the outright billionaires could afford it like that.

Vulgar yes but I don't think they're any worse than some of the super rich of today who I think in a way are actually worse than them ... that includes some actors and entertainers .

I found this to be utterly fascinating - for about the first 25 mins or so, then it became an utter bore. The part about the Duchess of Windsor charging up to $4k for an appearance at a party - no class whatsoever.
