I have moved from using 30% Olive oil to using 25% High Oleic Sunflower and 5% Olive. High Oleic Sunflower makes amazing soap, it has an even higher amount of oleic fatty acids than olive or avo. I recommend you try some high oleic, it is cheaper than olive, doesn't have to downside of short shelf life and gives a whiter bar than using EVOO

Sam's Club now carries a Sunflower/Olive Oil mix. It's 101 ounces for $13.98, and 80% Sunflower Oil 20% Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Works out to $0.14 a fluid ounce. Came here to say this. I have used the Sunflower/Olive oil mix at Sam’s Club to soap with. The sunflower oil is high oleic. It takes me a minute to work out the substitution math because it is an 80/20 mix, and I’m a fairly new soaper. I have had good success with it.

This soap is beautiful. If you’re going to use sunflower or safflower oil be sure it’s high oleic. This fatty acid means it will not go rancid as quickly and is usually what you’ll find in the supermarket since this sits in your cupboard, it needs a longer shelf life. It’s also comedogenic. If your sunflower or safflower is high linoleic acid then it will be prone to rancidity quicker and to keep it fresh longer you could store it in the fridge. This one is considered non-comedogenic. I think most cosmetic ingredient suppliers have high oleic and will make the distinction if they don’t or have both types.

I just came back from Cuba Ellen and my calamine soaps were so much appreciated along with the activated charcoal. Never made those together but that combo is a killer, beautiful and elegant and with a purpose ( not claims over here). Anyhow I was able to stock up on OO before the huge price increase , but I made a batch with 60% sunflower oil and I love it so much. It’s great and I am picky for my skin care ingredients but have to say, imo and for our extremely curly texture hair there is nothing better that works for us like canola oil. Also talking about “ not appreciated soaping oils, soy bean oil has the closest fatty acid composition to olive oil. So there is that. Regarding lather I am not going to bother you with a chemistry lesson but comes down to the fact that the manotón the water(liquid portion) evaporated and makes the lather improve. Thank you for another great video Elllen

That is stunning!!!!! I love love love the color juxtaposition. For me it's perfect but, if you wanted to do a little happy for a ballerina: some little ballet slippers on top would be too cute.- maybe in silver or gold? Or pink icing with a pair of black slippers with just a light touch of barely there pink glitter. Oh my, I better slow down or I'll be in the soap shop designing.....LOL. You know, no one does soap for ballerinas or anything musical but, we have a ton of youngsters who do both. Have a wonderful day.

I feel like that change in your lye amounts may be due to your other oils because sunflower oil and olive oil both have an SAP of 135 in soapcalc. That’s why the SO/OO blends work so well for soap making. I also agree with another commenter that the Sam’s blend is great, however, is unfortunately a limited run for them. I’m hoping that it’s been so popular that they get it back… 🤞🏻 Beautiful soap, as always!!!

@datbat13 ай бұрын
This soap is stunning! Now I want to experiment with some high-contrast color combos of my own. I guess I have a different perspective on the olive oil issue. I've just resigned myself to paying the higher price, but since I'm paying more anyway, I might as well experiment with other oils that I once thought were too expensive. Avocado oil is no longer that much more expensive in comparison, so I'm loving avocado oil right now. Yes, making soap is more expensive than it used to be, but I see the olive oil "crisis" as an opportunity to branch out and be a little braver. I've even found sales on some interesting oils, and I've been able to incorporate small amounts of moringa and morula oil into a couple of batches. They're low in linoleic and linolenic acids, so I don't worry about DOS. I can cut back in other areas of my life. I love soap-making enough to prioritize my joy. It can be a fairly expensive hobby if you let it, but I've always got gifts for every occasion. Silver linings and all that stuff. By the way, I've never used palm oil and don't plan to start. It's gratifying to see so many people start to move away from palm. Just as there is no such thing as "clean coal," there is no such thing as "responsible palm oil."

Olive oil has been expensive where I live since long. It has been a year since I started to make soap. So I have been trying different recipes without olive oil. Canola oil is the best option for me. However, I do not recommend using canola oil more than 40% of the total oils. The recipes I use have been improving. The biggest problem is that butters are very expensive and i haven't been able to find palm oil and rice bran oil. So it is very hard for me to form a good soap. They turn out soft and they are very soluble in water so they wear out quickly. One of the soaps I made got DOS after about a year. Only a small percentage of cocoa butter and beeswax that I used significantly improved the quality of the soap. A high percentage of coconut oil worked well with a higher superfat with 10% castor. If you have rice bran oil than it is good substitute for olive oil.
