In our experience, we found that the people giving us advise failed to fully understand the lack of memory made it impossible for the patient to use tools that would help them. One example is the call button around the neck for falls, she could have a dozen of them on her but she wouldn’t of remembered what it was for. We got to the point of saying that will not work because she has to remember what it was for. Another thing we had to deal with is her husband passed away and she kept wanting to know when he was coming home. We realized it was awful to keep telling her that he had passed away because it was like hearing it for the first time over and over. Our solution was to say he was running late, he’d be late tonight. She would forget about him and settle down. Taking care of her was one of the most difficult things we have ever done. I am very happy there is more support for caregivers now, when we did it 15-16 years ago there wasn’t as many resources.

Thanks for sharing Pam. It is very helpful to vent, or even just to read what others are going thru.
