This is the first time I see Panama being represented properly in any Buzzfeed channel ever. ¡VIVA PANAMÁ! 🇵🇦❤️ Btw, we also make them baked and they look very similar to the jamaican ones! This empanadas are mainly found in the Provinces of Bocas del Toro and Colón, where we have the most Afro-Caribbean descent.

In all fairness, a lot of our culinary influences in Panama come from the West Indies due to the large influx of workers from Trinidad, Barbados and Jamaica during the construction of the Panama Canal. I do love empanadas but I realize that there’s a heavy Jamaican influence in our culture and cuisine which is awesome!

As a person of Jamaican heritage, I have a lot of family of Panamanian descent. Many people from Jamaica and other Caribbean islands emigrated to Panama to build the canal. So there are many Panamanians who are of Jamaican and Afro Caribbean descent. We are cousins❣️

I grew up in Panama and I miss it so much. The corn-based empanadas are the best. The other empanadas I've tried from elsewhere are too dense -- you could build biceps just holding them and you have to chew so much, your jaw muscles get tired. To me, an empanada should be deeply fried, light and flaky, and the filling should be well-seasoned --- I agree with that is so important!!!!
