They are both great cameras. If you run a production house or have lighting equipment, the GH5 is probably better value because of the 4k 60fps.

I bought this thinking if such a big KZbinr approves it, it can't be a bad choice. I was wrong. For KZbinrs (or anyone for that matter) who make long videos, or need to record in 4K for a long duration, this camera is not the way to go. It overheats pretty quickly (around 15 minutes of recording) and you need to wait until it cools down. The video quality is great but what does it matter when you cannot use it? And although I knew the screen does not rotate, and you can use your tablet or phone as a monitor (with great delays and it also shortens your battery life) it made me appreciate how much I missed the ease of use of my first DSLR camera, my trusted Canon 600D.
@HatTrex
@HatTrex 6 жыл бұрын
I own a canon600d it stops recording after 12 minutes and overheats wich is the same as a6500 and any other mirrorless/reflex camera.

They are about the same the difference is that Canon wins a little bit if needs to track a person but Sony wins if the person walks at the edges of the screen since it has more focus points across larger area of the screen so its comparable. Sony have 4K and slog though.

Brilliant video! I've just ordered a Panasonic G80 for vlogging. I know that the Auto-Focus isn't perfect, but it's a matter of choice - I'd rather have an amazing image stabilization, NO OVERHEATING (by far the most irritating in Sony cameras) and a flip screen, than an AMAZING auto-focus. Any Panasonic users agree with me?

I will buy GH5 next, but not for vlogging. its a real nice camera and its getting even better if you buy the aputure dec Lens regain, so you can remotly focus, but I would suggest the sony fdr x3000 for vlogging. its really good for it.

4:20 shouldn't have used Auto ISO there imo but great point nontheless. If only the GH series was APS-C, THEN it would be unstoppable. Until then, I'm happy with my a6300 :)
@robertshawstaff452
@robertshawstaff452 7 жыл бұрын
Just get metabones adapter ultra for your Canon aps-c glass. Your gain one stop of light on your glass, and a sharper focus in general. The basic problem with MFT is that your need to get every photon on sensor, well metabones focal reducer improves on that. Also your equiv. focal length is improved, as your aps-c or EF glass will be wider on the metabones+MFT then on the aps-c. So it improves on a lot of the limitations of the GH5. The trade off is AF, but if you like that then I would suggest buy a used 70D (dpaf)+ML for those shots.
@calebwhite681
@calebwhite681 7 жыл бұрын
true....looking back, if I was a wedding videographer or something, I'd definitely have to get the GH5 for the 4K slow motion. And like you said, with a Metabones speed-booster the micro 4/3 become APS-C So if you've got the $500 for it, it is certainly worth it

I have been trying to record a high quality educational video with Nikon D5300 and it looks decent (when you make sure to increase sharpness), but not impressive like this Sony footage. I use 3 soft boxes (with 95CRI led bulbs) and an LED panel. There is so much light yet I have to set ISO to 320-400 with f4.5 on 35mm prime lens. Video still comes out with some graininess and is impossible to adjust in any way in post. Reduce red by 3% - oh no... weird patches of pixilation and color irregularities in the background. Looking at this footage with Sony - the colors - wow! the level of detail of text on the boxes - wow... the clarity of image - wow... and this is in already auto-compressed KZbin file... BUT why NO FLIPPING FLIP SCREEN?! I was considering to get mirorless Sony years ago when I was shopping for a camera - the tilt screen vs a flip screen (which D5300 has) was a deal breaker. But now that I really need to produce a quality video as opposed to pictures, I feel like Nikon D5300 leaves me wanting for more. It only records at 20Mbps. I think that could be a problem, but even when outputting directly to my nice ASUS computer monitor (thru HDMI out), the colors still don't look as vibrant and high res as I would like. It's just ok but not impressive. If Sony had a flip screen, it would have already been sitting on my tripod a long time ago.

I make vlogs (mostly) and I switched from the a6300 to the GH5. Won't argue that the autofocus on the GH5 is no where near the capabilities of the a6300, but for me I've learned to compromise it. Im shooting with face detection with the 12-35 and it works for me, not as good, but it works. Having the flip out screen, better battery life, and the different forms of weather sealing are the reasons that enticed me to switch. No camera is perfect and I do miss the smaller form factor, autofocus, and weight of the Sony system, but the other benefits of the GH5 keep me with it for now. Im keeping my favorite Sony lenses just in case Sony ever gives us more video features down the road.

Im a Sony user but I have been eyeing up the GH5 for awhile I mostly do stills work and granted that this is a video camera I still find myself wanting the GH5 after using it at BHphoto in NYC over my Sony... I just think it's silly to see how small that sensor is and how much bigger the body is, but I like the bigger body and I think this camera will would be better with the APSC sensor altho the performance would be minor between the 2 sensors I think there is more then enough room inside the GH5 to house the sensor for the minor upgrade and cosmetic appearance by looking more balanced senor/body size ratio.

Best review period. I forgo GH5 for the same very reason. I compared GH5 and Sony A7SII in a very tough environment at an outdoor wedding where we faced everything from a sunny to overcast and a thunderstorm to a complete power shutdown no generator and only available light for the ceremony was candles and my portable LED. Guess what GH5 not only failed AF test but also low light. Looking at A7SII footage no one believed it was shot with candlelights. My day was saved by Sony A7SII. I am glad I stuck with it and not sold it.

Great info delivered with humor. I've been luke-warm on my GX8. I like the tilting EVF, even bought a bigger eye cup for it. I love its swiveling screen. BUT... It just doesn't focus that well. I often have to keep half-pressing the shutter button 'til I get it focused. Made me think of getting some retro lenses that are all manual. I did great in the day with Pentax screw-mount lenses... even for a while with a Leica M4 and that horrendous Visoflex for macro shots. So... Tovarich*... I think I'm with you. Luckily, I buy used, so if I lose some Rubles it won't be much. (* do I have your correct native language, Boychik? ) Dosvedanya!

the screen needs to replicate what the output is, so just tweaking the screen brightness maybe bad, use the awesome evf. it's a live view mirrorless. it's showing you realtime what the out come of the settings will be for the environment. so in say M you can lower the shutterspeed, open the aperture or tweak the iso and it will show you how bright that will be on the resulting photo/video.

GH5 does autofocus fine by turning the custom settings off and setting the focus point to the center of the frame. It also helps with 60FPS since it does more calculations in that mode. Summer firmware updates may improve overall GH5 performance too.

Thank you. You forgot to mention that the A7SII costs $1,000 more than the A6500.... but I get your point.

@Eric Knorpp Original comment stated "As a low light camera with IBIS it is the best." Who the fuck said anything about the focus? all Sony E-mounts are bad for focusing.

My wife has the a 6500 but I find it a bit noisier than my rx10 Mark 3. Plus the car idling with changing lenses to get the shot games a lot of missed shots and inconvenience for travel. I got the best results with the rx10 Mark 3 and I got all the shots and clean low Noise video and stills.

I have read so many shitty reviews on the camera screen for the a6500 - I am referring to filming 4K in bright sunlight. How do you find the screen, is it really that bad?

I have a Sony A6300 with a sony 35mm and 18-105mm. I got the A6300 for lowlight and the lenses for autofocus. Sony is simply the best if you need autofocus. Canon may be better but they don't have the video quality. I have a GH4 which I am selling to replace with a GH5. That way I have the sony for low light and autofocus and the GH5 for everything else. The GH5 can continuously record for as long as your card can hold. I need that for a lot of things, but I could just get a GH2 and use if for those long talks where I need continuous shooting. Autofocus is definitely still an amateur thing but it can be used professionally. All this new camera technology is going to change the professional world soon.

I have a question plz, I want to buy a camera that combines the Sony a6500 features- the most important feature is the fast auto focus -and a flip screen, can you help with that? what kind of camera do u use to record your channel?

How often does A6500 overheat when you shoot 4K? And I often shoot videos that are longer than 30min making A6500 unusable for me, right? Does the A6500 battery even last enough for 30min of 4K shooting? Sorry but I cannot justify A6500, I'm sticking to my Sony AX53 for now which I have used over the past year, the only option I know that shoots 4K with a usable autofocus for longer than half an hour without overheating, with flippable display, headphone jack etc etc. Sure AX53 is a camcorder with a small sensor, fixed lens that has no bokeh, all has to be in auto no manual controls (except one manual control at the time). I really hope Panasonic will soon fix autofocus by a very significant amount, cause I really really want to buy the GH5, but with this poor autofocus performance I simply cannot buy it yet, which is sad. So please Panasonic, do fix the AF in your next firmware update, as soon as possible, if they fix it, good for them. Otherwise I'd have to wait for a Sony A6700 or A7000 or A7S mark3 or A9S or a new Sony camcorder perhaps AX200 or AX63, I wish for Sony with 4K60, dual SD card slots, flip out bright display, long battery life (similar to Sony A9 should be fine in A6700 or A7000 or A7S mark3 or A9S, whatever Sony might release this summer, if they release anything new yet. Maybe the GH5 set the bar so high Sony is forced to delay their next cameras until they can be sure to match at least 4K60, 6K anamorphic, 400mbit/s all-i or IPB codec, H265 codec option, dual fast SD card slots and more.
