This is great. I love the comparisons with the G9 - the most underrated camera of 2018. Looking forward to updates.

There are two things that I really like about the S1/S1R which aren't really showcased a lot and both of them have found their way on to the Fujis over the last couple of years as well. The first is the fact that you can adjust the size of the AF area on the fly via the command dial. I find this to be a real timesaver. The second is the three-way flip screen. For my style of shooting, this is a perfect compromise between a horizontal flip screen like on the Nikon Z6/Z7 and the full "flippy" screen of the Canon EOS R. I like how I can flip the screen horizontally for fast street shots or flip it vertically for portraits and macros. If my Z7 had both of these features, I wouldn't be lusting over a S1/S1R.

Thanks for chiming in... Yeah love the ability to adjust the AF as well. Since we vlog I prefer the full flippy, but the 3 way is rock solid on professional work so still happy with it.

Thanks for the great video. I already talked to my local dealer here in the Philippines and can't wait to get my hands on one. I've been shooting mirrorless several years and love how each generation gets better. I don't really get the hate that people have for this camera. It looks great and will pair well with leica lenses too.

martinS S Cool Thanks for chiming in. I agree 💯 this camera propels things forward for all. Having another power player means we will see more inventions in tech that benefits the artist.

Thanks for the vid, really interesting. Please do share what you can from your meeting with Panasonic next week as there has been lots of comments already around the AF hunting.

I definitely will... Yeah, it's hard to judge anything pre-production honestly. So, looking forward to the full run down and getting mine updated.

Can the panasonic S1r produce great sports photos? what is the best mode to use with this camera in action shots, thanks
@artistcharlesmaring3 жыл бұрын
I’m not really a sports shooter these days. And, I’ve never personally used the S1R for extreme high action sports, but while wouldn’t be my first choice, there is no doubt it is capable. I generally work in manual mode if the light is consistent. If not I may turn to shutter priority if I need to keep the SS above 250 to insure the action is sharp. Or, aperture priority if I want to keep the subject separation and keep my aperture wide open. It all depends on the circumstances when it comes to sports. There is no “best mode” but rather what the moment needs. Same true with focus modes. When subjects are coming straight at me continuous AF works well, yet when working from the side of action I tend to use single point. Wish I had a definitive answers but high sports is a wide category with a lot of variables. I certainly wouldn’t be concerned that it isn’t capable of producing amazing sports photographs in the hands of somebody who is seasoned.

I love how EVERY panny user is craving for phase detect, and panny keeps saying :"no, you don't know, dfd is better overall, no bending, no breathing". Then i hit the street with s5 and s pro 24-70 and I'm always surprised how much breathing the best lens can provide. It breathes like a dragon. Though, during daytime, it locks moving person very well. But as soon it gets dark, no city lights can help it. What afc mode would you recommend for street photos with moving subjects? For video I am using manual option on s pro 24-70 anyway. That combo is 10 out of 10.

I think Panasonic's DFD has the advantage over Phase detect because the entire sensor area is utilized for focusing as well as for shooting. Only the S1 (to the best of my knowledge) can focus at as low as -6 EV. DFD also has disadvantage, working only with Lumix lenses. It would be interesting to see DFD-compatible Lica and Sigma lenses in the future for the L mount!

Jaffar Al Mosaed For stills LUMIX has some pretty amazing autofocus. Best I’ve worked with on the M43 series like the G9. Continuous Video autofocus has been challenging with DFD but as mentioned, Phase detect has its own set of issues. So hard to say what the perfect answer is.

my lumix s1 cannot use afc for some reason. whenever i switch it to afc, there's a message on screen saying switch to afs and it stays as afs.how to fix it?

Long Huang Hmm I wish I had some insight. What mode are you in? Are you shooting stills, video, high speed video? I’ll try and replicate it and figure out why if I have more info.

The implementation of AI with DfD auto focus has not been explained well by Panasonic. Is AI working at each specific camera level? Or is Panasonic using AI to improve the various AF modes and the AI data will be used for firmware updates (for all cameras)? If AI is specific to each camera, for resale purposes, there will be market value adjustments depending on the prior owner of a camera. So an amateur sports shooter might pay a premium for a camera used by a top pro at the Olympics where the AI was pushed to the limit. Is that how this AI capability will work in practice? Great video!
@artistcharlesmaring5 жыл бұрын
Kent Doty All good questions to ask. They haven’t actually explained much about the camera as of yet. Just the specs but no details. That’s why there is so much speculation on KZbin but no real answers. Nobody really knows until the final firmware is tweaked as to what it is doing BTS and what it can do. I expect some improvements over the G9 and GH5 but here I go speculating 😂

Thanks, great video! I'm very interested in the camera as far as still go. Don't know anything about video yet. Panasonic, hands down have the best menus and most interesting settings for AF, hopefully they work as well as they look. The G9 focuses insanely fast in S-AF and I expect the S1 to do the same. Hopefully it can track as well! Looking forward to more information after the Lumix meeting. /Rasmus

New generation millennium people like small cameras they are so lazy to work with the big Cameras :)
@artistcharlesmaring5 жыл бұрын
S B LOL I love small cameras myself. That’s why I shoot M43 for so much of my work. But if I do go FF I want a body feels natural and ergonomic due to the larger lenses. Big lenses and tiny body makes little sense.
