I love that at the same time you are extolling the virtues of all this high end gear, you always bring it back to reality: phone cameras aren’t that bad. However, they are also pretty good GPS devices, media consumption devices, social networking devices and, oh yes, communication devices. For some of us, myself included, the constant interruption and disruption of switching from one mode to the other as I make my way through the day is simply not worth the convenience factor. And, keep in mind that every time one of these amazing features is accessed it drains the battery, some much more than others. And at the end of the day, both figuratively and literally, I need my phone most to be what it actually is: a phone.

"The best set of analogue controls I've seen on any camera with built in lens other than the Leica Q" - This is what sums up the LX100 series. I moved on from a Canon EOS 30D and went to the original LX100 and just have so much fun shooting with it. I must also add that it did wonders in terms of teaching me more about how shutter speed, aperture and iso affect the final image.

@jjchockey
@jjchockey 14 күн бұрын
@@bastian.michelmore compact and versatile with a zoom range. Ultimate image quality isn’t as good as a Fuji but it’s better than any other compact zoom camera ever made. A Fuji X100 is bigger and can’t zoom. A tiny Fuji XM5 body is about the same size as the LX100 but once you add a zoom it’s much bigger and on top of that non of the Fuji zooms offer the same amount of light gathering and DOF (Bokeh). The Fuji 16-50MM F2.8-4 is a 24-75 F4.3-6.1 full frame equivalent vs the LX100’s 24-75 F3.4-5.6 FF equivalent which gives you more light gathering and more DOF (bokeh) at any focal length compared to the Fuji with a zoom. If you don’t care about zoom a Fuji XM5 with a 28 or 18MM pancake prime would offer a similar size and noticeably better image quality than the Lumix.

As an owner of an LX100, I was waiting to see what the II would offer. While it is not necessarily a compelling upgrade for current owners, it represents a very fine evolution of an already fine EDC camera. Because it is not a huge upgrade, I’ll probably sink those funds into a GX9 to replace my OMD EM5 mk1 or more glass for said camera. However, I would not hesitate to recommend the new LX100 to anyone looking for a great camera in a very portable size.

Took delivery today of my LX100ii. Why not the RX100 V, VA or VI? Ergonomics just like the man says. Panny feels like it belongs in a photographer's hands. Sony feels like it belongs in the shower, only a bar of soap would be cheap to drop.

Hello, I'm a retired Photographer from the days of 2 1/4 Film. Have been using a Nikon d200 with a 35 - 200 zoom since I got into digital for my personal use, but am now too old to lug it around anymore. So I have been looking at the lieca since they have always made the best lenses. Now that I see other brands are using the lieca lens, it opens up allot more choices for me. Personally, I would not own a point and shoot without a Lieca lens. After all, it is still true that the lens is the first part of taking a photo.

I keep buying small cameras, and selling them. I only feel my passion with my new conversion to Micro 4/3 cameras. I like my G9 with prime lenses is very light. If I carry one camera the G9 or the DH5 with the 12-35 and 35-100 produce images that are enough better than an iPhone to justify lugging them around. I am 71 and weight is an issue. I used Nikon Cameras since 1964, along with every other known kind of camera and format working as a commercial Photographer for 30 years. I bought three smaller Panasonic with interchangeable lenses, sold them all and the G9 viewfinder allows my 71 year old eyes to see better through the camera than through my glasses. The small cameras are chasing a smaller and smaller market, my iPhone 8 can produce a nice 8x10 with considerable work in Photoshop. The JPEG files out of the two larger Panasonic cameras are good as is. Since I do mostly volunteer work now, offloading at the event works out fine.

I have spent decades looking through an OVF. I bought an LX100 to slip into my coat pocket or shoulder bag. I only use a screen for settings and reviewing photos.The manual dials are great. I only use the EVF when shooting. It does the job very well for what I do. Articulating screen is not important to me. Neither is video. I always buy the trailing edge of technology. I bought a refurbished LX100 for $600Cdn ($460US) last February. If I need something like this 2-3 years, I may consider the Mark II.

Erudite, informative and entertaining as always, Hugh. I count myself fortunate to have the Fuji X100V & two Pen Fs among my collection of cameras. For decades I used only my 35mm OM10. Ten years ago I bought my first digital camera (the little Fuji Finepix S2995 bridge camera) in anticipation of taking photos of our then anticipated grandchild. I've been on a digital journey these last ten years including the magnificent Fujifilm XS1, their X100T, now the V, as well as all three iterations of the Olympus OMD EM1. My wife and I are thrilled that our grandson shares our passion for photography and have bought him an X100V for Christmas. With the analogue controls and fixed lens I think there's no better way for him to learn and understand about photography, especially with a camera that he will have the rest of his life and which doesn't intimidate him. We encourage him to just shoot what he wants, as he wants without any concern for rules or restrictions. It's a joy to see the freedom of expression and confidence that this gives him. Already he's beginning to see what does and doesn't work for him. However, forgive me for digressing. These last few years I've had an itch that I'm about to give in and scratch. Specifically I am torn between the Panasonic LX100 (100 or 100 ll) and the Leica D-LUX (Typ 109) or D-LUX 7. All of my Olympus kit has a specific lens permanently attached to a specific body (I call them my customised bridge cameras!) whereas the attraction of the LX100 is similar to that of 100V, the fixed lens negates the debate and necessity to carry a plethora of kit and causes one to focus on the photography with the camera in hand. I'm an old traditionalist at heart and have never used any of my cameras for video. For me the viewfinder is everything. It's as though I'm looking out of a window at the entire world and I just have to decide on what, and when, to press the trigger. Stay safe and keep doing what you do because you excel at it!

Thanks for another wonderful presentation Hugh, always a joy to listen to you "conversation" with us. It does seem to be a wonderful little unit and I am always happy when the manufacturers give the public more options (this not being a "one size fits all world") to be creative in our captures. We migrated back to Olympus in 2016 as our one brand for all of our commercial work, ever so enjoying the smaller and lighter form factor and amazing glass. I will always carry a camera with me, even on family holidays, as I prefer a viewfinder (EVF or OVF) for my composition. The delightful Pen-F has been the perfect companion when I don't feel like taking the E-M1 MkII, and most of my personal work is in Monochrome, shot as in camera jpg. If I didn't already have the Pen-F, this looks like it would be something I would want! To come full circle with my ramblings, again, delighted that camera manufacturers are continuing to innovate and produce a variety of options for us! Cheers!

The iPhone X is a camera. But I wouldn't call it a real camera. A real camera establishes a mood for photography. Gives the tools and the feel to be capturing images. While perhaps very practiced photographers can enter this mode with any imaging device, for me at least, I cannot get into this groove, this way of thinking, this way of seeing, without putting my eye into an eyepiece, and clicking a physical, tactile button.

Very minor upgrade to Mark I considering the long time since release. The AF in video looks super slow. Crop is a no go nowadays. No tilt screen and so on. Not worth the money imo. The real competitor of Pana to the RX100 is the LX10/15 not the LX100 which is way bigger. Even with all the influencers pushing Videos out to the LX100II I doubt the sales will be that great.

I have to start off with I am only an amature but would love to be better. I really am asking for some help and advice. I had the Olympus Pen 10 and while it was amazing for photos etc, because of my shaky hands (I have a tremor) and Rheumatoid Arthritis I just could not keep changing lens. Fantastic camera, but..... The things I would like from the camera is good photos and video, good stabilisation, touchscreen, moveable screen but not that important, good zoom, I would like to photograph birds, family, moving shots, macro so bugs on flowers etc, etc. I was looking at the Lumix LX100 11 but not sure about the quality of the photos and video also the zoom, the Sony HX99 but not sure about the same again and also stabilisation, and the Canon SX740 HS. I have been trying to whittle them down but I don't know all the jargon as am only an amateur but willing to learn. I am a young pensioner so cannot spend a lot of money but I think you get what you pay for in terms of quality (maybe)!!!!!!! I need to decide quickly though as I would like to start going out again to photograph. Sorry if it sounds a lot but I don't know anyone professional to ask and if I ask in a shop I could be talked into the wrong one. 😊

Interseting as alwawys, Hugh! But my main question is...The LENS! Sharpness?? As a landscape and product photographer using the Fujifilm X-T3 System, my main focus (pardon the pun) is image quality at larger print sizes, particularly, image SHARPNESS and DETAIL RENDITION. So, which lens is sharper (between the Panny and the Sony RX100 V), i.e, which system would retain more fine details when printing at, say, 16x20"? Thanks again, sir, and Happy New Year to you and yours!

My wife is in Iceland for holiday right now. Wanted to bring something to shoot colorful evening sky (aurura b.). I rented this 100 II because it has a bigger sensor than her iPhone XS and a Leica f/1.7 lens. For capturing images in perfect light, I agree .... her iPhone is fine and sufficient. But for other circumstances in which you want to have greater control over the exposure settings in light-compromised situations, this camera rocks and the iPhone wouldn't be able to carry the water. Thoughts?

Sorry. 😉 Neither one is a low light monster. The ‘VI has reach the iPhone and LX 100 II don’t, the LX100 II has ergos the ‘VI and iPhone don’t. Between the two, I’d go RX 100 Vi for reach, LX 100 II for fun. But you might also look at the larger ILC Sony a6300 or Fuji X-E3, both with 24mp APS-C sensors for at least one stop better low light performance. Of the two, I’d go with X-E3 w/18-55. Bigger than the little guys, but now you can also explore other lenses.

She asked advice on buying a camera, to use on her next road trip across the States, and also to start learning (semi) manual photography. The release of the LX100II has lead me to only one sensible recommendation for her... It's a second hand original LX100. That, for me, sums up the meaning of the LX100II for the masses.

I got my LX 100 (not II) back in 2016 I still firmly believe it's the best camera within it's genre so to speak. I was very disappointed in the II upgrade, pointless features for an insane price bump. I've probably gotten five friends to buy the same camera and in my opinion it is, by far, still the best camera. You can get a used model for 250GBP. Nothing can beat that. What would have made me to upgrade would be if they managed to squeeze in an APS-C in there. But then again, actually being able to use f1.7 and not having a too short depth of field and setting the focus right, is a positive for me. So again. All hail the first Lumix LX100

Nice review and entertaining as always, Hugh. Here's my 2 yen from Tokyo. I have the Leica version of the LX100 and love it, despite some minor quibbles. Would have considered upgrading, but don't see the point based on what's in the LX100M2. Now hold that thought... I have the Huawei P20 Pro (despite what the US govt says about Huawei) and am truly amazed at the Leica camera tech on this phone. The Summilix three lens system IQ is incredible and yes, it's compelled me to sometimes go out sans a real camera. But does shooting with the phone bring the same photographic joy as shooting with my D-LUX, X-Pro2 or any of my other cameras? For me, the answer is "no", but your mileage may vary. Again, thanks for the nice review.

I can not decide between the 15mm or the 25mm Leica for the GX85....My main camera is the old trusty Leica M8 with 40mm f2 Summicron - C lens from the 70's . Cheap Leica option. Sometimes I like to use AF therefore the GX85 :-)

MrBillboeing both Panny/Leica are excellent (we bought the 15/1.7 and the Sigma 30/1.4 instead of the 25/1.4 because of concerns over CA - but I think the Sigma AF performance is not as good).

Re flipping screen > Not sure is this true or not, but LX100 has no tilting/flipping screen because Leica, apparently, does not like that, and LX100 is rebranded by Leica as their D-Lux. If it were Panasonic's child alone, without Leica's name on the lens, it is possible it would have the tilting/flipping screen.

Interesting once again.... I can remember a time really not so long ago when any phone could never compete with any camera ever. That line is being blurred I sent a couple of photos to my son who is also a photographer. I took a photo of my dog indoors in daylight. One shot with my Pixel 2 one with my Sony RX100VI I asked him which was which. He couldn’t tell sad days in some ways?

Listen Jeff Goldblum (am I the first to identify how much your elocution reminds of him?) ... I trust that this generation will come to look at iPhones as "real" cameras, but people with as much grey hair as us - well, I think we will know that tiny sensors and lenses without aperture control, and LCD viewfinding (instead of eye-level) will never be a "real" camera. You might very well make "real" photographs with an iPhone, but whether here to stay, or whether fading into the sunset, "real" cameras are tools that simply inspire an experience that - once enjoyed and appreciated - relegates iPhones to social media food pic projects. I swing a G Master on my new A7iii, and as the saying goes - "But when you shoot it, you will know where that money went." - Pulp Fiction (1994)

Shooting experience is why I'd still take a camera with me on vacation outside my phone (and I have a Pixel 2, no slouch). I just very much enjoy the physical controls. I really wanted to like the GR, but I always leaned back to my E-M5 for some reason. I would really like to try the LX100, but ultimately, that price tag is just too much given what I already own.

Oh Hugh 2024 is happy to find you here, again Time's been good to you and your skintones, somehow anti-aging From my matrix, reasons to pick up a LX 100 II, now: #1 Small size, fast zoom ## The small, light, wonderful E-M5 II (EVF, flip LCD) with the excellent, small PanaLeica 15mm 1.7 isn't small. To reach further, while fitting in a coat pocket, the only option is the 12-32mm which means losing around 2 stops. To maintain LX100 aperture means getting a 12-35 or 12-40 pro zoom at about the same cost and size (+ the size of a M43 body) or carrying two small primes. I thought the E-M5 and the E-PL7 were small, they aren't. In practical use they need a bag with space for more of those small (indeed) great primes and then maybe the also great plastic tele or 35-100, a battery and a charger for longer trips. Such a bag will never be small, light perhaps, not small. #2 L Monochrome D ## I haven't made the effort to try and match that from RAW (.ORF or .RW2), maybe it's possible but I want it as a SOOC option. It looks fantastic, both for stills and video, and is still around on the new S series AFAIK. There's a very nice Grainy Film II profile (aka Tri-X-ish recipe with sampled grain) on the E-M5 (and almost any Oly M43 body) that suits some shots, apply personal preference. The Lumix L Monochrome (no D) profile and Dynamic Mono filter (aka recipe) is also good, sometimes great. But I'm charmed by the D and need to try it out, on M43 that means LX100 II, GX9, G95, GH5 onwards. On 1" it's on FZ 1000 II and LX10. #3 Further thoughts ## Abruptly abbreviated. Next time. Totally getting the RX100 VII also btw.

Agree with Hugh and other posters that it is hard to see the point of this in 2018 (FWIW, my favourite camera of all time is the LUMIX LX3. Using dynamic B&W@400ISO in JPEG there was joy and magic). I barely use my R100IV these days - even for work, although I absolutely would take the A7RIII and a couple of lenses on holiday - my entire camera kit now fits in a Chrome shoulder bag.

Can someone please explain me why 24-70 is The all around zoom range? I know this seems minor but I can’t shake the thought that a 28-75 or if possible 28-80 is much more useful. I rarely see me self in need of something as wide as 24mm. I love the aesthetic of the 28mm thanx to the Leica Q and the iPhone. And 70mm is just a bit too wide for portraiture. Don’t get me wrong it’s not about the bokeh, it’s about the perspective distortion and what it does to what I’m photographing. I’m mostly shooting in between 35mm and 50mm with the occasional 80mm for portraits and close ups. Although I might have to disclaim that this goes almost exclusively for my video work. When I’m taking pictures on the street it’s almost exclusively 50mm on my film camera or 58mm with the iPhones tele photo lens or 28mm with its wide angel lens.

Well, there is no mic jack, yet again! So that pretty much automatically kills it as a consideration for a lot of increasingly frustrated people, including myself. I just want a better than cellphone camera that is nice and compact, but with a mic input so I can do quick and dirty vlog! None of the Sony RX100 have this, was a perfect chance for Panasonic to leap in and steal a niche for themselves! Especially if its screen had also flipped out.

Well it was the LX100 3years ago that started all my trouble; I saw Lok Cheung's brilliant review on Digital Rev. I was having trouble with my Nikon D7100; I hated it and on holiday I snapped and used my compact instead (hold that thought). So I wanted a high quality compact for travel; no way was a DSLR coming with me again. So I looked at the LX100 and noticed the Leica D-Lux, even patted it in the London Mayfair Leica shop. Then disaster hit over Christmas. I saw Steve Huff's review of the brand new Leica X113 with a stunning 23mm F1.7 Summilux with macro. I bought an X113 and a visoflex unseen and it turned my life upside down. Suddenly there was space and hyper realism in my photos, this was a mix of Hopper and Breugal, I was addicted. The history you know, after 30 years Nikon sold and replaced by Panasonic GX9 and Leica TL2 and X113. Why disaster? I now have about £6000 less in my bank account but i am at least set up now for the next decade. So that earlier thought, what about compacts? I always carry a compact. It started in 1994 I added an Olympus Mju to my Nikon FM2n kit. There really has never been a better point and shoot made; I have dropped one down a mountain and it still survived and it had a bitingly sharp 35mm lens. Then in 2004 I upgraded my Mju to a Mju stylus 200 with 3MP. With hindsight that was when i went mirrorless as i never warmed to my DSLRs when i bought some 4 years ago and I didnt shoot any film in the troubled intervening years as i embraced the end of work. So what else did i buy 4 years ago? I upgraded my Mju 200 to a lovely red and totally indestructable Olympus TG-3 compact. It slips easily in my pocket, needs no special care, always gets the shot even in microscope mode (this camera is amazing). So I am never interested in compacts, I know I will always just buy the latest incarnation of the Olympus Mju (its now up to TG-5 but my 3 is still going strong). The LX100 niche is well covered by my GX9 with 12-32mm lens if i am feeling really lazy. We do live in amazing times ;-)
