I always find it interesting when we hear alternate names from the one we're used to (or in this case, a mistranslation). If that mistranslation hadn't happened, we would be used to the original, and wouldn't be having this reply! 😉😂😂😂

I think the hope in a jar thing is best interpreted as "hope never leaves without permission". After all, the seal on the jar is broken, hope isn't trapped there, it just didn't leave.

I interpret it as hope is the one thing we keep deep inside ourselves, while all the bad things are out in the world and can strike at random

I wonder if a thing being in the box means it is under our control. Nobody can stop things like illness or death, but we can still choose to hope. When I was told this story by my mom as a kid, she said hope was born out of the escape of the evils, like when evil exists but is not in you, you are able to hope. I always liked that.
@wyrdsworth
@wyrdsworth 5 ай бұрын
I always had the same interpretation! The horrors "escape" and are free to act on us. "Hope" is a trait you only need in the face of horrors (depending), abd it's also bot an "external" force to humans, hence the metaphor of it "staying", not "in the jar" as in "trapped", but as in "ours". And he's the god of forethought, so conceivably planned for his brother to fail!

Love that speaking to dogs is up there with the meaning of life! "...jar was full of good things that were gifts to mankind - things like immortality, the meaning of life, the ability to speak to dogs..." Maybe there is still hope because somewhere out there is the ability to speak to dogs!

What's interesting about this closer look at the story is that it reveals a deep tendency in humanity to just smile and nod and pretend it all makes sense just because a story sounds good. Clearly abundant attentiveness and critical thinking were some of the gifts that escaped the jar. Now we have to work at it!

Yo that's deep. What is Hesiod intentionally wrote an inconsistent ending that managed to sound good on the surface just so he could have a laugh at all the people who applauded the story without noticing the incongruity?

The theory I heard somewhere around the internet was that hope was really referring to hubris, the idea that you would dare to hope that the gods's plans for you could be overturned. Since this is a very notable theme in stories like Oedipus Rex, there's some logic to this. Still doesn't explain why it stayed trapped in the jar, though. But if I may make my own theory, or rather a personal revision to improve the story, I would say that by being trapped in the jar, we had those evils under control. Now that they are freed, we cannot stop the gods from using them to ruin our lives. But we still have hope. It is ours, and we can use it as we wish. The gods cannot take it away from us, or use it against us.

My understanding was that Prometheus had packed Hope at the bottom of the box/jar as a failsafe in case it was ever opened. In that case, Hope would destroy or negate all of the bad things. But Hope got trapped in the box/jar. And as a result, when bad things happen to us, we have "Hope" that Hope will escape and relieve us of our misery. When all else fails, there is at least Hope out there, maybe to be released and save us.

My thought would be that Hope decided to 'stay' in the jar voluntarily. Hope isn't something is simply abandoned easily. You have to give it up willingly. Hope can be used as a great good or great evil. Prometheus probably saw it as a 'possible evil' instead of a clear gift.

Hope was left in the jar as hope is part of faith, without the "evil" of religion, so the time spent in the jar distilled hope out of faith and when the jar was opened, all the "evil" parts escaped but the "non-evil" part was left behind. So there is no hope out in the world but the evil faith is everywhere. ;-)

When it comes to "Why was Hope in the Jar?" Or "If the Jar contained all the evil of the world, why was Hope in it?" That must mean Hope is evil?" No, I am have come to terms with the undstanding that all of the evil got released into the world but humans persevere, they continue to fight all those negativities and evils because they have Hope for a better future or a better tomorrow. Think about it, part of this story depicts Pandora as the First Female so she is representing Humanity in a way. Sure, she let out all the Evils by mistake or intrigue or curiosity but Hope stayed because she believed Humanity would fight it. If she let it out, she is letting Hopelessness in the world. A world without Hope

I've read a theory that there used to be a god in Greek mythology that got merged with early Zeus that used to have a jar of misfortunate fates, and a jar of fortunate ones, and that perhaps this is a seedling of that idea (perhaps Zeus promised it was the good jar, but it actually wasn't or something).

Maybe they were like siphons, like evil entities which ate all the good stuff which is why we run out of all the cool things like money, beauty, health, etc. but the one thing we don't (have to ) run out of, and can keep forever if we just don't let go is hope. So it's like Æsop's version with good stuff, but their negations manifest, so it's not that we have access to hope bc we have it in a jar, but that we don't have to contend with the forceful removal of hope because the bugger that would eat our hope is still stuck in the jar?

Hope was left in the jar so humanity could be given Hope. Or something to that effect. Prometheus being the god of forethought makes sense to have him put Hope in the jar so that humanity would have it when all the evils were let out. He knew it would happen eventually just not as quickly as it did happen.

Feel like you could interpret Hope as a bad thing given the idea you're as pessimistic as Hesiod. It becomes a representation of how you can't have good things and instead only wish things were better for you. But I also 100% think it was someone trying to be clever and not thinking it through with possibility of another mistranslation.

Interesting point: it’s never actually stated in the myth who opened the box; blaming Pandora (as the woman) became more common as Christians translated it. In the myth it was opened by “a mortal.” Epimetheus opened it in some versions. But we still call it Pandora’s box.

I always thought because Hope didnt get out, mankind could control it. Because what's the one thing Hope prevents? Acceptance. If you caught the plague, Hope would tell you its okay, you'll recover with bed rest. Keep making promises to your kids how you'll play as soon as you're better. No need for medicine, Hope tells you it'll all just be a memory soon. Acceptance says you'll likely die if the condition does not improve. You'll need to prepare for the worse and make sure your family can go on without you. Hope is not always a good thing. At least with it in control, you have power over it. All other evils are seemingly out of our control. Again, this was just my interpretation.
