What made me understand Seth's work better, way back when I was in my 20s, was when I read the quote by him, "It's not about the stories. It's about the feeling." It never occured to me before than that someone would make stories in which the structure of the story wasn't important. It opened my eyes to a new way of reading comics in general.

yes, I hear you about that… even though for me there have been other comics who have opened that portal

Tomasso has released Black Phoenix in single issues via his Patreon. Then Floating World crowdfunded an oversized HC that collected the first ten issues. I’ve been curious what was in these TPBs (so thanks for showing them off!). I assumed it was repurposed and recollected stories from the various issues of BP. And it seems that way. And collecting them via genre. The single issues were a hodge podge of all the genres.

that‘s very interesting, thank you!… Floating World Comics are not easy to get over here, so this version was the first that has been available over here - well, I don‘t look very much into Crowdfunding etc… usually the huge postage ruins these kinds of offers for me anyway

I had a chance to speak with a guy from Floating World at SPX this year. They are collecting all the BP issues by genre. There should also be new BP material eventually.

@@earlgrey862 yea! I imagine shipping isn’t great. I’m just glad Tomasso is collecting this stuff. Before it was all Patreon exclusive. Which isn’t something I’m keen on.

@@ChasetopherLivingstonIII that’s awesome! I like that Tomasso is collecting it in different ways.

My favorite Seth book is "Wimbledon Green", a book that doesn't get the same attention as his stories serialized in Palookaville. Might be something worth checking out if you're still on the fence about Seth's works. Tim Lane is so underrated, glad he got a shout out by you. His piece in the recent NOW was also a highlight for me.

Those Black phoenix minis seem a better way to read the stories than that huge omnibus from floating world... the smaller format, uncoated paper and simplified colour schemes suit the art a lot better IMO, plus the stories are actually finished in one go rather than interrupted by other stories and spread over a few issues.

I third the Wimbledon Green love. By far my favorite Seth work. I even have an "action" figure of the little feller. Li'l Stevie reminds me of Pierre, the little boy with David Lynchian hair in Twin Peaks that makes the garmonbozia disappear. Gonna check out this one and the Tommaso.

you speak from my heart. these times realy need escapism. yesterday i was talking to my father about that theme and we remembered the good old carl barks stories....:-)

it‘s actually an almost endless list of books and cartoonists that can come to one‘s mind thinking about escapism. thanks for the nice comment.

I liked your thoughts on Tommasso. I was charmed by Black Phoenix no. one - he is best suited to these kinds of snippets and i found myself thinking back fondly on the reading experience - haven't read no. Two yet.

If you found the normal Seth output kind of boring, you should definitely give Wimbledon Green a try, for sure the funnest/funniest book by him. One of my all time favorites.

Definitely can’t recommend Wimbledon Green enough, it’s about “The greatest comic book collector in the world” which I’m certain you can appreciate and relate to. It’s pure fun and a real page turner!

Von Luc Cornillon ist relativ leicht zu bekommen "Marsmenschen greifen an", was ungefähr in die gleiche nostalgische Richtung geht wie "Captivant", nur eben als durchgehende Geschichte.

The Tommaso comics look quite Hernadez Brothers/Rick Sala/Darwyn Cooke's Parker.

I guess I was in the right age, when I read "It's a good life if you don't weaken", 25 (half a life) years ago. 😅 I immediately fell in love with Seths work, but "Clyde Fans" and everything else by him never had the same impact to me. But I always liked it as much as the books by Joe Matt and Chester Brown.

love what tommasso is doing here, and the new lane story looks fantastic (is he massively under-rated?) there's a new tim hensley book called detention. haven't been able to get my hands on it yet, but i suspect it'll show the same retro vibe. totally unrelated, have you read fungirl by elizabeth pich?

i think so. very modern and very funny millenial hijinks, i think pich is fantastic. there's a very fine hardcover from silver sprocket. i think ray carcases turned me on to her, or maybe dan at rave sensation ( both channels i really like).

I'm afraid if you didn't get Seth with "It's a Good Life if You Don't Weaken”, then possibly Seth's not for you, which is okay. I love Seth, but I prefer not to read Palookavilles and wait for the stories to be collected in book form, where characters and ideas can be seen in the wider scope of a long, more complex narrative. Thanks for sharing!

I have a question I felt you may be able to answer, there's a European character, I believe he's more a villain. He wears a metal helmet that looks like a knights helmet and wears a tuxedo I believe. For the life of me I can't remember his name or the stories he's from. It's been driving me crazy! No matter what I search or type in I can't find anything! If you happen to know id be greatful!

you probably refer to the Monsieur Choc (Schock in German), the nemesis of Tif et Tondu (Harry und Platte in German). He was created by Rosy and Will... if I'm not mistaken Sorry for my late answer, but I was offline for almost two weeks.

@@earlgrey862 that's it!! Thank you so much!! There a book called "Shock" (or something along those lines) about him and I could NOT for the life of me remember his name or the publisher. I kept thinking he was in Stories with charachters "Mop & Monkus" from a book called "Where's Kiki?" That I read but it wasn't it lol thank you for answering my very random question! If I wasn't already subscribed I'd subscribe again 😆
