How about not making watches that look like dive watches, but which can only just about survive being worn in the rain? How about not downgrading movements, and removing features like hacking seconds? How about not using previous movement model numbers, to hide downgrades? How about actually adding features, like tool-less adjustment to bracelet clasps? This interview missed the chance to ask about many of the issues, which have upset paying customers. I don’t care what time this man goes to work. I do care that he has overseen the downgrading of his company’s watch movements.

@r2l100 "If you got a problem with their product there is no need to be an upset paying customer" You don't address the problem of being an upset ALREADY PAID customer - i.e. someone who has paid for a non-waterproof dive watch with down-graded movement and misleading calibre name, who would dearly love not to be a paying customer, but is stuck with a heavily depreciated, difficult to sell piece of tat instead of a luxury watch because of the company's concerted efforts to mislead their customers. How do you think that customer feels when a fellow Richemont Group employee lobs soft-ball question after soft-ball question to the CEO of the Richemont Group company that did them out of a serious chunk of their hard-earned cash ? KZbin rules require disclosure of paid ads / sponsorship, but this interview is not strictly "paid-for" so it's another case of Richemont Group laughing at its customers / consumers - "we've found a loophole, so suck it !"
@RandomGuyRandomNumber
@RandomGuyRandomNumber 2 жыл бұрын
@r2l100 How does anyone properly research if a limited edition watch with a solid back has a properly decorated movement or a cheap base ETA before buying it (Brooklyn Edition) ? You are asking an impossible standard of care from the consumer instead of a basic standard of not being a lying scumbag from the company. If you can't feel empathy for someone who gets swindled, then that says a lot more about you than it does about the swindler, but that is far from the point of my comment. And my point was that here is an opportunity for the CEO to explain / apologise / promise to do better, and it was not taken because the interviewer had an undisclosed financial relationship with the company being interviewed. Not disclosing that relationship is more of the same dishonest and misleading BS. Look elsewhere in these comments for posts praising Panerai for their open-ness and transparency based on this interview because the posters have not been made aware of all the company's recent controversies. But sure, blame the new customer for not carrying a loupe, roll of watchmakers tools, mass spectrometer and gas chromatograph when buying a watch from a luxury brand's boutique. Stupid fool - he really deserves to be swindled out of thousands of dollars. What was he thinking - buying a watch without first graduating from an approved school of horology ?

Watchfinder Co. and Panerai are both part of the Richemont group, so unless somebody is plotting an internal revolt against the brand and/or the Richemont group, it is quite unlikely they will give such spicy interview. Matter of fact, I bet 99% of watch channels will not confront a CEO in such manner in their interviews; it's all about building relationship.

That’s what I mean! It’s all a scam. You want truth? The brand is CRAP. They have downgraded their movement. They removed hacking seconds. They use a $5 Richmond movement in almost all the duo and submersibles… they don’t even finish the movements anymore. They raised prices. Their quality is bad. Really bad. Snap in case backs. 100m water resistance. They even said by 2025 all 316L steel will be 100% recycled “e steel” aka garbage. Luxury products and recycled don’t go .. they are woke and will go broke

“Innovation is NOT at its best” when it means taking cheap recycled materials and selling them at a premium (marketing gimmick) along with cheaper finished movements. As they cannot innovate in movements and design, they focus on commoditising the brand to a point when the Frankenstein watch makers will applaud and thank them f9r making their life easy. @r2l100 This is not what I meant. I understand that they want and need to make a watch to please as much as wide of an audience. But my opinion is that they spend too much time on marketing a watch that is not what they were selling anymore. If you constantly say what heritage you have and that you are a dive watch company you should make a watch that reflects that. Instead, they were selling stories but downgrading the watch and service. At the same time raising the prices. In my local AD, I have the option of buying a Submariner and a Panerai at the same price point. What do you think I will choose? Or buying a Seiko for 400€ that outperforms a 9000€ Panerai any day of the week in build quality, accuracy,... They simply destroyed a brand. And to have an interview from Watchfinder and not raise any of these questions makes you think twice about what was Watcfinder doing here. A stunt comercial.

No worries - but also no reason why any of us should hold back in spotlighting everything that’s become deceptive and shabby about the brand. As for Watchfinder - well, this was basically an indirect paid advert for Panerai. Can’t blame them for feeding into advertising, but it would be silly not to hold them accountable for the deception, when that’s what they’re edging up to.

Great discussion, however I have to say I am surprised to learn that Panerai is listening to their Paneristi following. Are Paneristi truly telling the CEO and his entourage to “cheapen” their movement finishing? to issue one after another boring limited editions? to focus on new materials and recycling at premiums? As a Panerai fan and owner (Luminor 8 days Monopulasante which I love) I am steadily losing trust in the brand. Their customer service support is just awful. Reliability is not great (chrono repair required after one year). I do agree with the CEO that he is taking risks, but for me they are going in the wrong direction and will steadily lose their raison d’etre. I’m sure the CEO will respectfully disagree as they continue to pursue their direction which is at a tangent to the core of Panerai 😢

Why some of your lines are "dive style" while they have 3atm or 5atm. Or out right lying about movement finishes that are hidden behind case backs. These criticisms come to you because people love the brand and want you to succeed and you're failing them. Do better.....you should want to do better. Richemont bought them in 1997 as the brand was turning into THE watch to have, with huge tail winds from Hollywood (Stallone, Schwarzenegger, etc). I still remember meeting a big tech exec in the mid-aughts, complimenting him on his Panerai, and his first words were, "Thanks, you know it's watch the Italian seals use!" And then Panerai didn't do anything to move beyond their big tool-chic look into elegant-chic like Rolex and others did, yet they've continued to raise their prices as if they play in that space when they don't. This laziness is likely what led to their new CEO hired last year, former Roger Dubuis CEO Jean-Marc Pontroué. At the beginning of this year, he's tried to pivot Panerai into both new materials paired with experiences (the sailing yacht, the South Pacific thing, etc). And IMO, their new materials are super cool and their watches look great ... for $5k or less. Panerai is thinking they can re-justify their price points by teaming millennial-beloved experiences with their new look, but I don't think it's going to work. If they wanted to add experiences it should be factory delivery of your watch, meet the craftspeople, etc - a cool diving trip doesn't justify a $20k watch. I can buy a bracelet made by a local for $5 and it'll remind me more of the trip than a Panerai. Just my 2 cents. Plus they're still just WAY WAY too big. sure, offer some bigs, but drop to 44 and 42 already. So, yeah, they're in big trouble, and the new CEO is trying for revival with experiences, but I think only significant price drops combined with low volumes and HQ events to drive engagement will work. Here's an example - a watch at $5K in 42 or 44mm sells a metric crap-ton, but on the other hand a $21k and 47mm! Who the feck is going to buy that? If that's the plan, they're dead!!

They offered my money back , or buy a different model. I was told the 422 was no longer available ? Then a few weeks later Panerai found me another 422. Less than 6 months later the hour hand had a mind of it's own and would not adjust correctly with the second hand ? The seconds hand would be off as much as 30 seconds in less than a day. I was told by Panerai that I shocked the watch. Which is untrue. I only wore it once or twice a week and was very careful with it. It has been at the Panerai warranty center in Texas since late April. It was covered under warranty. To say the least I am not happy with my 1st Panerai purchase. The 422 is still available for purchase on Panerai's website? I was told it stopped production in 2019 of the 422 by Panerai and I was lucky to get one ? Bring back on the base models (PAM01084) the sandwich dial, 200M RW and a display back. That's what we really want. A data base where owners could register their watches, would help your used market which in turn would give buys the confidence to buy into the brand. Due to the fakes many buyers are scared to buy the brand on the pre owned market, which seriously effects your new watch sales, just due to general lack of desirability for the brand. No one wants a watch they can't resell if they need too.

I’m done with Panerai. I love the aesthetic & the heritage but it hate the shit they put out. I bought one of my dream watches, a 111. As much as I love it - it is a pretty substantial disappointment compared to other watches as this price point. I want to buy a Radiomir, just a basic Radiomir with wire lugs & the onion crown… but I cant bring myself to spend $6000 on a 763. It’s just not worth it. This shit can’t hold a candle to my AquaTerra or JLC reverso classic Now, a used Pam380 for $2,900 - that’s a bit more like it.

It's not cheaper to make things out of recycled materials. In fact it actually cost more since you'd have to add more process into the production. If it was cheaper, cheap brand would use 100% recycled materials already.

I used to own a Pam1499 Luminor white dial. I liked the asthetics of the watch. However the in-house movement (9100 I recall). Was frankly poor. My watchmaker tried to regulate it twice, as from new it was -8 seconds a day. He eventually got it to -4 Odd. But it could never hold anything remotely plus. I now have Omega coaxials. They are fantastic and light years ahead. All I read now is bad things about the finishing and the poor movements still... E.G losing features etc. So whilst I liked the style. I won't go back. The CEO doesn't seem to have sorted that aspect even now. A shame....

There wasn't much meaningful conversation about watches, it was just brand talk and the day in the life of a CEO. I don't think I heard one movement number or model number. Perhaps you should have asked the audience to post their questions before the interview. Maybe you wanted to do that or talk about different things, but you were restricted from talking about certain topics

I'm sorry, panerai totally cheapened the brand. The new business model for panerai is to say "F you" to the watch enthusiasts and rely on social media and influencers to market the new line of watches to folks who are not savvy with watches. It was absolutely disgusting to hear the CEO speaking so fraudulently about taking input from the enthusiasts of the brand. Shame on watchfinder for putting out a puff piece like this. I truly hope you won't be doing something like this again. If you are, go ahead and let it be a live stream so that enthusiasts can engage with CEO's that claim to have, and are comfortable with dialogue with enthusiasts.
@PeteNice29

The problem generally are "enthusiasts" in any category are generally aholes that like to come on and bash, while telling people in the companies themselves that they know less than the enthusiast window lickers. That's why most don't do it -- there's zero upside.

What I find odd is the approach of corner cutting. A £6100 watch is not at a level where I would expect this. The sandwich dial has been reintroduced on the 8 day model, but at the expense of the exhibition case back. Normally you see progression over the years when looking at Omega and Rolex for example. Solid bracelets, milled clasps, sapphire crystals, and: greatly improved movements. I think this might be the only brand that has gone from COSC certified (Unitas movement in the PAM111) to non certified.

@LuisOrtizMBA
@LuisOrtizMBA 2 жыл бұрын
@@seanlingham5254 For a couple of reasons. First, there may be people, men and women, who want a smaller watch, and they shouldn't have to settle for less water resistance. The other is that a 50m water resistance would be more congruent with a brand whose heritage is entirely built on being used in the water. It doesn't make sense from a branding perspective to have a Luminor watch, even a dressy one, with the same water resistance as a JLC Reverso.
@seanlingham5254
@seanlingham5254 2 жыл бұрын
@@LuisOrtizMBA That's your opinion. However, what i see is different. That Due, especially in gold with MOP dial is super popular in the Chinese market among female buyers. Additionally, there is a 40 mm option for a Luminor Marina with 300m WR in black, blue and white dial. I'm all for giving a company flak for 'downgrading' movements but i definitely think it's unfair if they offer you the watch in 40 mm with WR (which is what people give them shit for with the Due or lack thereof). If you can't pull of a pretty standard 40 mm, then you need a Swatch.

Panerai did some really questionable things like putting bone stock undecorated movements in "special" watches. They also are so incredibly easy to fake for many models that their own boutiques wont even take one on trade. Finally, they got way way too popular for their own good at one point about 20 years ago. Think Rolex now, and boxed themselves in with a new model every 5 seconds. That said, they ARE good watches if you like that design and folks that are into watches will almost always have one either in their watch box, or that they fondly remember. They're good watches. They just got overhyped. Now the issue with the due is that their entire history is DIVE WATCHES. A 30mm dive watch is.... silly.@@martinross1140

I hate excess packaging which it prevalent in the luxury goods industry. I love simple elegant packaging the can be recycled or re-used in some way. For instance: wrapping an item in fabric that can then be used as a handkerchief ot a skarf. Another idea: a box that becomes a soft lightweight travel pouch by removing cardboard from inside. How about a shopping bag that turns into an insulated lunch bag you can take to work? Why give people rubbish along with your beautiful product? Make sure everything the customer leaves with is useful.

There is no news. This is one member of the Richemont Group of companies (WatchFinder) lobbing soft-ball interview questions at the CEO of another Richemont Group company (Panerai) and completely ignoring the real questions about dishonest and misleading business practices of Panerai, an over-priced watch brand which cannot tell their own $10,000 watches from $ 300 Chinese fakes even if you paid them to do it. The CEO does tell us what time he gets to the office in the morning, and how that is an hour different from the other office, and the working day ends punctually at 6.00 p.m. in Switzerland - really exciting stuff like that...
