Was in your situation about a year ago. I ran off a good length of mig wire from my machine to run the route of my wires. Worked great! Enjoying this build very much. Thanks!

I don't think you could get a fish tape down that A Pillar. When it comes to fishing small passages like that, tape your new wires to one side of the old wires and cut the other (unused) wire off, then fish. Or, use the old wires to pull in a string, then fish the new wires in with the string. But, the key is to make your tape joint as small as possible. But, sometimes you get lucky (like you did), and it magically fishes! (I myself prefer Luck over Skill any day!)

DO NOT use string or twine! Use a high-test fishing line or a small OD cable as those are far less likely to break. Excellent advice on using the old wires to draw in new wires or at least a placeholder such as the previously mentioned fishing line or small OD cable. 1/32 inch cable works quite well IMHO. Best wishes! - Max Giganteum

"OH, I feel blood coming on." I don't know why I relate so well to that today, but it's like doing firewood. "Daddy, why is there blood on your hand?" "I dunno, son, something got me, I reckon."

That did not look like fun. Glad you finally got it. Always a big relief when you get a challenging job like that done. No on to the next.

Those heatshrink solder joiners are a nice lazy way to do it, but they are absolute JUNK. The low melt solder generally forms a very poor cold connection and is brittle and much more likely to fatigue than using proper 60/40 leaded solder. If you wanted quick and easy, properly terminated crimp connectors would've been much better, and you could unplug them if you ever need to remove or replace the lamp in future👍

Only guys who have shared a struggle like this..just to do something the proper way can truly appreciate what this video is about..😂..nowadays it would be a wireless remote control LED that be stuck in there..😂😂

On the solder wire issue, I would rather it be soldered to have a more solid electrical connection. We both know that area of the roof can be a condensation box & we've all seen more than our share of wires corroded into the terminals on these old trucks. I personally think the vibration concern is moot in this area of the truck; along the chassis - no doubt. Isn't it fun chasing wire where some engineer figured no one would ever be again after the truck was built??!

-- Fun indeed... I was taught young to never pull wires out of enclosed spaces if you intended to put them back in or replace them unless you used the old wires to draw in the new wires or a substitute to act as a draw. This eliminates the need to go on a fishing expedition. As for the truck itself, if I'm not mistaken, the wires for the dome light were installed before the sheet metal was spot welded together at the factory. In other words, the wires were installed when the metal was put into the jigs to form the cab of the truck - no factory fishing required. As for the engineers, I doubt they thought very many trucks from the 50s would be around 20-25 years later, let alone after the turn of the millennium. Interestingly, some of the trucks have outlived the engineers (probably along with everyone else!) who were working for GM when the truck was built. I would speculate that there are few who are still alive at all who were actually employed by GM even starting at the end of the 50s. - Max Giganteum

@MaxGiganteum I kinda wondered about that, wiring before welding. And I agree 💯 on the other!

Never done it before but a piece of tubing like fuel hose chased through first then your maze first then taping the wires first may have helped???

Do you really believe there would be enough room to install a tube the size of fuel line in most of those spaces? Ooops! Clearly, you definitely have never done it... - Max Giganteum

Don't you have rubber grommets when you feed wires through the metal frame so won't scratch The Wire or slice it without you knowing it. You hamburger
