This is a thorough instructional video on how to change the oil in your Panigale (models 899-1299).
Key point. Once you have refilled the bike with fresh oil, start the engine for about a minute to ensure that the new oil gets distributed into the oil pump and filter. Then, turn the engine off and re-check the oil level again, because the oil level will drop due to pump/oil filter filling. Add additional oil as needed.
Also, while checking the oil, make sure the bike is completely upright and not resting on it's kickstand.

actually a pretty darn good video, very detailed for sure, thanks 2 things though: 1) if you are going to use 3bond on your oil drain plug, only use it on the lower half of the threads, reason why the use of it is such a controversy is if your drain plug thread go into the pan you could introduce 3bond into the oil system and have the possibility of plugging something up 2) before you wired up the fill plug you should start the bike and get the oil filling the whole oil system and check the level again and top off if need. great video though keep them coming

Doc, Once again your excellent vid has me on my 2nd personal oil change with 100% success. I have 3 track days under my belt on the 1299 base model. I am running SC1 front back, expert tuned (stock) suspension, running 520 pitch super-light drive with 40 rear sprocket. Last track day I lapped everyone in the Novice class. Headed to VIR full course in July. Lots of fast local guys, I will stay in the Novice group for now. With my list of tuning has made the bike very easy to ride. The shifts are effortless, falls into a turn super stable with the SC1's giving me insane grip !! Keep the shinny side up Sir !!

Chris Martin Thanks man! Really appreciate it. The icing on the cake for me was when my wife used the video to change her own oil! She did a great job and didn't need any extra help from me except to let her know where the tools were :) Keep it shiney side up and continue to progress at a safe level. I'm switching to SC1's front and SC2's rear. Excited. Only going to do about 9 track days this year though. Too many travel plans :)

Conrad Desgranges. I'm not a mechanic and I have zero experience in working with bikes that are not Ducati's. That being said, it would not surprise me if most competing brand motorcycle drain plugs were magnetized. Again, I spoke to a local Ducati dealer and they assured me that there was nothing wrong with the amount of swarf shown in the video. I suppose the oil filter does more work than we think it does. It would be interesting to learn how much swarf the oil filter catches between oil changes.

A good alternative to the TB1215 is yamabond grey, We use it on every oil change for track days, and as a d16rr race mechanic I always use it even on street bikes plus as you said it is in the factory service but also factory race spec sheet. also on your safety wire a trick to keep your calipers from getting scratched or any other engine metal surfaces is to use a length of clear hose to shield your safety wire. Great vid keep up the good work.

Dr. Andrews sir thank you !! I have complete confidence in this in video. My dealer charges $180 for an oil change on my 1299, uhhhh how about "NO" ?? I have done my 1st track day and can't wait to go back !! Only way to truly come close to having a full Ducati 1299 experiance. Now, just need a vid on how to remove the chain and sprockets ? I honestly am so frightened to even ask my local mechanic the tag on that one.
@andrewssam123
@andrewssam123 7 жыл бұрын
Chris Martin. Thank you for your comments. Consider an EK 3D chain and an A&E quick change sprocket (sample pic of drive train seen in the beginning of the video). When I changed mine out, not only did I bring extra bling to the bike (as if I needed more), I also shaved 6-8 pounds off the stock chain and sprocket. I give the range in weight savings, because I don't remember how much it was exactly, but it's within that range. www.bellissimoto.com/AEMDrive.html. You will likely have to change the front sprocket as well. Ask Lyle (referenced below) to be sure. I paid to have this maintenance done by the local Ducati dealer (~$200) and it was money well spent. If you haven't cut chain before and you haven't changed your front sprocket before, just pay them. :) If you go through Bellissimoto for sprocket & chain, email Lyle or Randy at Bellissimoto and ask them for a pricing break :). Tell him I sent you to him and he may give you a discount. No, I get nothing for the referral. They are just really good people. :)

Richard Burns. I do know how to reset the maintenance indicator. Either you have to reset it yourself with a motorcycle scan tool (costly- MS6050), or borrow one from a friend, or have the dealer reset it next time you are near the shop. Some dealers are reasonable and will do it for free, while others aren't.

Very nice. What's the size of the screw for the oil filter removal so I don't use hooks? Thank you.
@andrewssam123
@andrewssam123 7 жыл бұрын
Danny Porsche. I use 7 mm, but I personally tapped my oil filter covers so that it would accommodate a 7 mm screw. Both of my 2012 1199s models did not come with pre-tapped oil filter covers. I have not changed the oil to the Anniversario yet. When I do, I'll share which size screw I used to remove the oil filter. Bottom line, for the time being, simply go through your screws and find a slightly larger screw than the stock oil cover screw. If your oil filter cover is pre-tapped, it should work just fine. If not, you will need the hooks. Happy Holidays:)
@andrewssam123
@andrewssam123 7 жыл бұрын
Danny Porsche. The factory size is 8 mm of the threads in the oil filter cover screw holes. Only advance it 2-3 mm though.

After re-adding the oil, should I start the bike and get it up to temperature, then turn it off and let it cool down before I check the final level of the sight glass? And I'm assuming you should check it with the bike still on a stand and upright? Or are you checking it while it's leaned over on the kickstand?
@andrewssam123
@andrewssam123 4 жыл бұрын
Charles Christena. All you need to do is start the engine for a minute, just to get the oil pumping through the oil pump. This will cause the oil level to decrease in the sight glass. No need to bring it to operating temperature. When you assess the oil in the sight glass, ensure that the bike is straight up and not leaning on the kickstand. Hope this helps.
@andrewssam123
@andrewssam123 4 жыл бұрын
No need to worry about the temperature once the oil has been drained. Starting the engine just gets the oil pump filled with oil. Thus, start the engine for a minute or two, and recheck the oil sight glass while the bike is straight up and down and not resting on the kick stand. Add oil as needed at that point. Hope this helps.

Hmm. My oil filter cap bolt broke with 13 Nm. Luckily I was able to remove it. Not sure why that happened. Now I’m afraid to use the torque wrench, as I don’t want to break another one or worse yet strip the threads in the block. Any advice on that. I don’t know if someone overtightened the bolt previously and weakened it to the point of failure.

Jacob. I just thought of another couple of points regarding the drive chain modification that you should keep in mind. This AEM quick change system and 3D EK chain shaved a little more than 6 pounds off the stock drivetrain weight. I wouldn't recommend this drivetrain modification for touring purposes, because the quick change sprocket is not as durable as the OEM drivetrain. However, for regular street use and track use for the typical Panigale rider, it works great! I have been running AEM quick change sprockets for years and have not needed to replace them yet. Probably not running them as hard as I should. Work and weather impedes lots of motorcycle riding. But when I do need to replace the sprocket, it will be quick, easy, and not that expensive to do :) Hope this helps.

Perfect for me im not a touring guy but a street guy, i have a 1299 S, One question i was confused on from the Bellissimoto site is they are asking about Flange color (Which i believe yours is gold) but they are also asking me to pick a Carrier color?... Carrier? I want the 520 Setup (15/41), I can get a new front sprocket elsewhere is if the OEM 15 doesnt work.

Should the oil level be between the mark after adding the oil, while the bike is still cold and hasn't been started? Or should you start the bike and let it run for 30 seconds or so to let the oil circulate, and then check the mark?
@andrewssam123
@andrewssam123 6 жыл бұрын
msdss. You should start the bike for a minute or two to allow the oil to circulate through the oil pump and filter. Then recheck the oil level and fill accordingly. I prefer to place the oil level at the high mark but not beyond the high mark. Also, when you check the oil level, please make sure the bike is standing straight up and not on resting on the kick stand.
@msdss
@msdss 6 жыл бұрын
That is unfortunate... Every place I've read/watched, said to put about 3.5L in. So I played it safe and put 3L in. That barely registered in the site glass, so I added another half liter. I did what you suggested and let the bike run for a few minutes to let the oil cycle, and then let it sit over night... Now, with the bike off, and it sitting up right, the site glass is completely full... I guess I need to drain some of it back out... So somehow my motor takes significantly less oil than everyone elses.. Oh well. Thanks for all the info.
@andrewssam123
@andrewssam123 6 жыл бұрын
msdss. Yes, you may need to remove some of the oil. The engine oil is best checked cold. One minute of idle will not heat the oil very much. If your cold oil is higher than the max listed on the sight glass, I suggest considering a siphon hose inserted into the opening where the oil cap resides on the right side of the bike. Siphons are inexpensive and readily available at Harbor Freight or a local hardware store. If you email me, I will forward you the workshop manual as proof.
@msdss

I just pulled the drain plug for 2-3 seconds then re-torqued it down. Definitely not the safest method, but it is the only method I have available to me. Will be re-checking the torque before and after each ride for the next few days for sure.

8bit Flea. I have several torque wrenches including a couple of digital ones. I believe in the video it's a Tekton. But you can shop online with Amazon to obtain one. Just check the reviews to ensure that it is a quality product and make sure you know the range of torque values that you will use. Here is a sample of options to consider, but there are others as well :) EPAuto 1/4-Inch Drive Click Torque Wrench, 20 ~ 200 in./lb., 2.26 ~ 22.6 N/m www.amazon.com/dp/B01LX4ND65/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_rUKXzbDC46HN6 TEKTON 24335 1/2-Inch Drive Click Torque Wrench (10-150 ft.-lb./13.6-203.5 Nm) www.amazon.com/dp/B00C5ZL0RU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_WUKXzbES2AJ5Y TEKTON TRQ21101 1/4-Inch Drive Dual-Direction Click Torque Wrench (10-150 in.-lb./1.1-16.9 Nm) www.amazon.com/dp/B01M12284X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_GWKXzb562QT4S

I reused my crush 2x with no duc bond and no leaks at all, I'd like to stay away from putting liquid gasket into my oil reservoir. I just buy into the OEM madness with the OEM ducati filter to keep it OEM down to the shell advanced oil every 3k. I'll hopefully get a new crush washer when i turn it in at the 7.5k mark. I'm gonna mark it so if they don't change that I'm gonna go corperate because my warranty will be over so it's gonna be a fuck you I dont need your cheap ass when your parts department always pushes for it. ALSO, I used 2x screws to walk the dog since it's a threaded cap.

after you filled oil to correct level while bike is cold. did you notice while its running no oil is present in the window
@andrewssam123
@andrewssam123 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. If you run the engine for about a minute or two, the freshly added oil will circulate into the oil pump and oil filter. Then use additional oil to fill up to the correct window line again. Then you are all set. Sorry for not including that in the video.

@@optony9606 Step 1) after completely emptying the old oil, changing the oil filter, and correctly replacing the oil drain plug and oil filter cap, . . . add fresh oil to the correct oil window markings. Step 2) Run the engine for a minute or two to circulate the oil. Then turn off the bike. Immediately look at the oil window. You will notice that the oil level has dropped. No worries, the missing oil is inside the oil pump and oil filter. Step 3) Immediately add additional oil up to the correct line margin as seen on the oil window. Step 4) Replace and properly tighten the oil fill cap. Please forgive me for not being thorough in my response. Ride safely my fellow Ducatisti :)

@@andrewssam123 it's ok it. should be cold and cycled. the shop I used and the window up to the line while the bike is on its side causing it to leak

@@optony9606. Let me get this straight. You have the bike laying on its side, as in horizontal with wheels off the ground??? Now that is an interesting way to look at your oil window. I guess one could inspect their oil window in this position immediately after a left handed low slide. You might consider having a Ducati mechanic do all of your work for you as reccomended by the Ducati dealership. .

I have yet to use any kind of sealer on a drain plug and I've been working on motors since the early 1980s. Overkill in my book.

Chris Bramblett. Many people say exactly what you are saying. That's why I say it's "controversial" in the video. Some Ducati mechanics say use it, while others say, . . . "It is not needed" & "I never had a problem without it." I will continue to use the sealer for three reasons. 1) I track two of my Panigales routinely and I can not afford an oil leak. 2) A local senior Ducati mechanic in Wisconsin, who has a solid reputation amongst the local racing community, says to use it. 3) The Ducati Manual says to use it. By the way, I was recently told the following by a local Ducati dealer owner. "As of 2016, new Ducati Panigales come direct from the factory with the sealer on the drain plug", says the owner. Overkill? Perhaps. My personal opinion is, if you are not taking it to the track, you are fine without it :). Ride Safely and have great holidays.

Mark Ullyett. That's one of the beauties of owning a Ducati. Rather than have particulate matter (swarf) floating around in the oil, the magnet on the oil drain plug collects it and prevents it from circulating. No need to worry :) I also checked with the Ducati dealer, and they also said there was no need to worry.
