Quick tip with RTSS, if you have the game running, you can hold the left ctrl key while clicking add, and it'll show a list of all graphical applications currently open. Then you can just select the game exe there. Just a slightly faster/easier method

Being bottlenecked by a 75hz monitor isnt that bad, i use RTSS to cap my frames at 70fps and i also overclocked my GTX1650 Super OC by +150 core clock and +525 memory clock. Most my games run stable at 70fps, including Tarkov and Arma 3 (depending on server of course). Also i use gsync+fastsync instead of gsync+vsync on some titles that has doublerendering issues, most noticeable is Tarkov, which locks your FPS to exactly half the refresh rate of your monitor when using scopes on distances, no matter what your FPS cap is if gsync+vsync is enabled.

You could of mentioned FastSync where if you are able to achieve at least double the frame rate or more of your refresh rate, haveing FastSync on will let you have lower imput lag as well as no tearing. It will always stay at a multiple of your refresh rate, this workes really well on lower refresh rate monitors like 60 Hz, the frame rates possible are 60, 120, 180, 240, 300 etc. It still has a use on higher refresh rate moniotors like 240 Hz for games like CS:GO where really high frame rates are more easily achieved, frame rates possible will be 240, 480, 720, 980 etc. FastSync basically keeps updeating the "buffer" with the newest frame while waiting for your monitor to refresh, so if for example you have a 60 Hz monitor but can easily play a game at 240 fps+, it will update the "buffer 4 times before sending that last frame to your monitor at the correct time.

The FPS cap with RTSS mixed with frametime monitoring is the best piece of advice I have come across. Never knew a lot of stuttering issues were from a FPS cap being far too high and you should adjust until a smooth result is found through monitoring. Of course, this also implies the game you are playing is optimised as this won’t work on a game that runs awful regardless of FPS cap.

Not sure if anyone knows how to help with this, but despite setting an FPS cap, I end up just seeing an even further FPS drop. For example, if I average 120-140 FPS, then set my cap to 100 to be safe, I then start seeing drops down to the 80-100 range, even if my FPS didn’t drop that low before I capped it. Setting the cap even lower, will then have even lower drops. I can’t seem to get a locked frame rate. Update: So I’ve been looking at suggestions everywhere. And there was one random Reddit post that suggested turning off Windows Built-in Game Mode. I tried that and it actually fixed my performance issues. I’m not sure why that was what’s hindering my games. However, I’m now able to set an FPS limit and it doesn’t repeatedly drop lower.

When you set an FPS cap on your Nvidia (or AMD) control panel, if you put for example 120fps because you have a 120hz monitor, you will still see screen tearing in some scenarios where you are looking at something easy to render like a wall, and it's because it's hard for the GPU to "guess" how fast it has to render those frames to not get past the limit, and when it happens you see the screen tearing. When you are using the frame limit with After burner and Riva Tuner it sets an even lower cap limit to your settings to avoid this. So if you put 120fps, it's probably trying to keep it around 105, 107fps to avoid going over the limit

So basically: Be realistic when setting your game's graphics, keeping your hardware in mind. Don't get greedy, be realistic. After that, cap you FPS to a number you won't fluctuate below. If you get anywhere from 90-120 FPS, but can hit 100 FPS almost all the time outside of exceptional circumstances, cap at 100. In games that have a built in frame limit, use riva tuner to cap it anyway. It overwrites the in-game cap and leads to a smoother experience. Thanks m8! I knew a bit of these things already, but I learned some new stuff, like using Riva instead of NCC and capping already capped games. Peace, and thanks a ton!

If you want perfectly smooth mouse movements with no micro stutter whether in games or in a desktop environment, use a mouse with a poling rate of 1000hz and set your display Hz or frame caps to a clean divisor of 1000. Here's a list of display Hz and fps caps that would achieve that: 50, 62.5, 100, 125, 200, 250. You also need to make sure your fps and display are synced.

@thachester
@thachester 2 жыл бұрын
@@kaktus8129 It's actually really simple. Your monitor refreshs the screen at a set rate. So if you have a 144hz monitor the screen refreshes 144 times per second. Your gpu then renders frames. Ideally you want your fps to match your refresh rate. Things like tearing/stuttering/input lag all are caused because the games fps isn't the same as the monitor refresh rate. USB has what's called polling rate, basically how fast the mouse position is sent to the pc. The faster the polling rate the faster the update position is sent. WHat the gentlemen above is stating is when your polling rate, fps, and refresh rate are all running at the same rate or divisable by each other it will give you a display clear of tearing/stuttering/ and input latency.

This is rubbish, mouse polling is independent of monitor display refresh rate. What mouse is polling is the surface you are moving the mouse on DPI x Hz, not the monitor. Monitor just displays the position of the mouse and all you need is stable and low latency of displayed frames. Basically mouse movement polling Is independed of monitor refresh rate.

I have a 2070 Super and with any game ive been running the fps graph just hasnt been smooth. Recently for the past 3 days every game I've been trying to run has been stuttering frames like crazy. Overwatch used to run smoothly at 144fps all the time, MW used to run at around 100-120 and now it only gets 80 and stutters. Can anyone help?

@panjno Overall, great video, but maybe you can clarify something for me. My understanding of how frame time relates to smooth gameplay is different than what you're claiming here. Maybe you can let me know if the below is correct or if I'm not understanding something. If your monitor is 144 hz, there is 1/144 sec between each frame being displayed. 1/144 sec = 6.94 ms. When a game is hard-capped to 144 fps, and you're getting a solid 144 fps, but your frame times are varying between 5.0-6.7 ms, that is fine and won't affect the smoothness. As long as the frame time is LESS than 1sec/fps-which in this case is 1sec/144fps = 6.94 ms-then you will experience perfectly smooth performance. When you tell the GPU the hard cap is 144, as long as you can get the frame rendered in less than that amount of time, it will report the frame time as exactly 1sec/fps even if the frame times are actually less than that, and actually vary (because in truth not every frame takes the full time to render). In other words, as long as the frame times never spike above 1sec/fps, you will experience perfectly smooth play. Do you think I'm wrong about this? If so why? Thanks.

thanks for the helpful video but why is it so complicated to get the most fps out of my graphics card when in reality when i have a 3090 i shouldnt have to worry about having to test it in every game to get the most fps i want out of it

Hi Panj, thank you so much another really helpful video. Im playing on an i7 rtx 2060 laptop and these are really helping me get the best from it. I do have a query though, i have capped fps through rivatuner and nvidia control panel for apex, but my frames only cap to 105 when i have afterburner on in the background. if i dont launch afterburner before apex it just peaks and troughs as it did before

I think on your topic of FPS caps there should be a few things pointed out: 1. be default FPS should be either max native monitor refresh rate or an even multiple of it, while your MONITOR should be set to native refresh rate in driver/windows settings. Monitor refresh rate is found in "Change Resolution for Nvidia and I thin similar for AMD, AND can be set Windows as well. Then set your fps to a multiple of that max. For example if you can't get 240fsp, for a 240hz monitor, capping at 60 or (120fps) is a very good idea since, 60 will be mathematically perfectly compatible having the monitor display every frame 4 times instead of say capping at 75 FPS which WILL introduce microstutter by being mathematically incompatible meaning jumping frame times HAVE to happen to keep FPS matching refresh to prevent tearing. And even though I have working g-sync, I STILL get smoother frame rates by locking at 60, a multiple of my native 240, rather than unlocking and letting g-sync sort it out. I picked 60 fy default because I can get it reliably in ALL games no matter the settings AND I don't cook my GPU as hard in games that don't demand higher FPS. Then I set individual games as desired, because NVida per-application settings override global defaults. 2. This depends HEAVILY on your game, but consoles push 60fps, and only modern ones. If your title is cross-palatform, or Its an old cross-platform game, capping at 60 can prevent all kinds of "strange" bugs you might get when running a game NEVER intended to run higher than 60 fps at say 125fps. The most infamous of this was the old Bethesda games where the physics engine exploded at high FPS >60, resulting in things like flying horses, objects ping ponging around rooms, or being randomly launched into the sky. (not the OTHER bug with the giant clubs) So consider your game. perhaps your PC shooter wants 120, while your console exploration game should be capped at 60, or even 30, to keep it from bugging out. So consistent and bug free is better experience than trying to push max FPS at all time in all games.

What made me search for this is that about a week ago, War Thunder, a game I play almost daily, dropped down to 10 to 60 fps. Now ever since I downloaded it, my fps ran on 100 to 120 almost every match until last week. I have no idea what caused this. There was no updates and no changes that happened on the pc. The only thing that changed was me updating the game. i do know my graphics card is old, its an AMD Phenom II X4. It runs most games well, even though it holds back my gpu. The setting changes from high to low does nothing since i mainly play on custom low settings. Rocket League runs fine until I play an online match.

My game hitches like a biznatch.. its insanly painful and i have all the lowest graphics on a good pc. Pc is just older.

Panjno I have seen alot of youtube videos about optimise pc, but its always yours there fix stuf, and easy to follow.. The last weeks i have tryet to solve my GPU hickups, they was driving me nuts, i had tryet all kind of thinks, and watch alot of crappy youtube videos, nothing helps. But i have not tryet this, and it seems to have fixed the GPU hickups! Im loking forvert to try it out in other games. Only tryet it out in War Thunder, I set it to max 125fps on my 144hz monitor, it seems so stupid -19fps solvet my problem LoL.. Thanks Panjno you are the best!

@Panjno Ok im still got small GPU hickups. not as much like before but still, the GPU % falls some time from lets say 80% to 45%, and make i lag a little in a sek or 2, Any one got a solution?? Can it be something like Pre rendering frame time, it is set right now to 1?? Or what can it be there makes it do it??

I disagree what matters is low latency, why this trick works is because in GPU when working above roughly 94-96% can have divation in frame latency. E.g. you want 150fps cap, if it means your GPU is limited to below 95%. It has potential to decrease latancy and any further decrease in fps sure adds stable framerate. But it can introduce more latancy. It depends on engine, CSGO and Valorant would set cap at GPU utilization. Fortnite and Apex would set it for stable framerate. Like explained by Hardware Unboxed. What matters is GPU utilization.

only problem with doing this is. if your fps drops below your cap. it makes it super choppy. so if your on a lower end gpu and you want example 144 fps but on a game you can only reach 100 in some parts. then you will have to cap that game at 100 or it will make it feel more choppy

@RJARRRPCGP yeah, vsync is really only good if you're struggling to hit 60fps or if you're struggling to hit like 120/130ish. Once you have a pc that's capable of running games higher than 100fps on average with good lows, you almost never need vsync on. I will say, though, some games even with my 3090ti and io 13700k I had to turn on vsunc for a better performance. But that was only like 3 games and they were all old indie games.

Funny enough I did this the other day because I was playing beam NG.. and frames on that are all over the place so I use the cap inside the Nvidia control panel like you showed but that's all I did and I capped mine at 100.. And yes it was definitely slightly smoother and also it did not get my laptop as hot either It ran a lot better so total thumbs up for this one.. 👍👍👍
