Lazaros Mousios and what's wrong with making a comparison with pantera and rap? They actually have a lot in common. Rap and metal are two different cultures of people saying the same thing. It's "Fuck the establisment, I go my own way and do what the fuck I want, and there's not a damn thing you can do about it." It's two different forms of rebellion. Power to both.

Interesting, never saw the similarities between Gangsterrap and those Songs from Pantera. But as you say this, jeah there are some. I´d stil say there is a difference. I never saw Pantera speaking through this song bout themrself, while i always associate a Gangsterrap act with what he is rapping about (not that i know THAT many acts). But jeah, you could see that aspects of the music and the liyyrics. Kind of blows my mind right now. It´s cool to expierience musik i know for such a long time through different (your) eyes and ears and see things from another angle. That´s why i like your videos. Keep up the good work.

Pantera was originally a glam metal band in the 80’s and they had a longer band name “Pantera’s Metal Magic” but then shortened it to JUST Pantera. They named their independent label release with what was left of their original name, the album “Metal Magic” and also named their independent label “Metal Magic” as well too. They had Terry as a singer during this time. Then they wanted to change their style of music just a little and got Phil on vocals and became more aggressive with their music which fit perfectly with Phil’s vocals by 1990 when they finally got signed and released the album “Cowboys from Hell” It was their first major label release as they had 2-3 albums that they recorded with Terry and recorded at their dads studio. Dimebag Darrel was even offered lead guitarist for the metal band Megadeth before 1990 but Dimebag wanted his brother Vinnie Paul to also be in the band. But when Dave from Megadeth said no he turned down the gig to pursue his band with his brother and in so glad he did do that. Unfortunately we lost Dimebag to a psycho that killed him on stage after Phil and the bassist Rex weren’t returning the brothers phone calls about doing more with Pantera. So they formed another band called “Damageplan” and recorded and released their debut album and were out promoting it while doing club shows in which on the same day that John Lennon from the Beatles was killed (December 8th 1980) Dimebag was taken from us on December 8th 2004 (24 yrs later) in Columbus Ohio at a small club called “Alrosa Villa” if I remember correctly. Just a little bit of history for you.

When it came out the sound was new and heavier...they wanted you to know that they were the new Heavy metal band on the block and gonna kick your ass with metal! after their transformation from the what we'll call glam metal , it's kinda of a reinvention of themselves, thus the subject of the song....yeah, it's kinda "i'm the best rapper out there, no one can touch me" type thing....awesome connection. What they're singing about in this song is that they're basically outlaws coming out of nowhere (they were practically unknown before this album came out), who would suddenly take over the town (metal music scene) with their double-barrel 12 gauge (unprecedented heavy and groovy shit). And take over, they did.

This is their 1st major album release. The album is Cowboys From Hell (CFH) and this song is titled CFH. This is not them being gangster it is a themed song. It is basically them telling the world they have arrived with a cowboy twist to the lyrics. Example: "High noon, your doom!" High noon was the time set for most street duals in the old west. The wild west cowboys were the wests 1st OGs.

Phil's Lyrical has always been underrated. Great lyricist. When I was like in 1st-5th grade all I really listened to was rap like NWA Wutang, Ice cube, etc in way early 90's so I liked that hard ass type music that had a mean beat with even meaner lyrics. When I moved and went to another school I was introduced to Pantera and never looked back. I had heard other bands that were metal/hardcore but nothing got me like Pantera. The guitar had me like, dude that is just like a dope ass rap beat, just faster and on a guitar!

Cowboys from Hell was written in 1990. Also they're from Texas. Heavy Metal was "Street Music" 10 or so years prior to Gangster Rap. Drugs, gangs, wars, police corruption, politics, street fights, murder, racing, demons, religion, poverty etc were common in Metal from about 1978 forwards. There is a reason that when Public Enemy was starting they did "Bring the noise" with Anthranx who had already been around about 13 years.
@RowdyGrunt6 жыл бұрын
Pantera were the real deal, hard charging, hard partying metalhead's, who pioneered their style of metal. Lyrically, sure, you could say that it's similar to Gangster Rap, but they were doing this kind of stuff early on. Few bands have ever been able to lay a groove to metal like Pantera. Funny thing, this isn't even the heaviest music they've done; not by a long shot.

This song is all about where they come from, they're from Texas. (aside from Phil Anselmo who came from New Orleans) Being from Texas, the stereotype is to expect cowboy songs, country music, etc. But these guys are more than a little different. Thus the cowboys from hell. When you get into songs like Cemetery Gates, that's where they start getting into deeper subject matter.

I think people that listen to certain genres of music, IE Metal heads get to entrenched into their type of music, they are afraid to admit they like the beat of some rap.. I'm a metal head, and I like some rap, some country, all kinds, I imagine its the same with rappers. People get entrenched into their genre and people try to shame them for "liking that rap crap!!" or "liking that metal devil music shit!!" most metal bands, are just normal dudes that like heavy music. Just like rappers are just guys that like to spit hard lyrics. Like you said, when you get right down to it, we all the same, just some of us are afraid to admit it or reach across to those "opposite" of us and learn about others. Kinda sad when you think about it.
@THEMASTEROFYOU20006 жыл бұрын
One thing about just responding to the tunes, it leaves out the context of what was happening at the time of the recording. For instance these dudes Pantera, were young, from Texas and the father of the two brothers (guitar and drummer) was a country music producer song writer etc. Can you imagine dad letting them practice in his studio playing their music?. Hence from Texas, they were cowboys, tipping their hats to Dad, yet being so outrageous for the time, they were the cowboys from hell, lol. These guys created an entire metal genre, and lived as hard as they played, becoming heros with rabid fanbase. Also known for their honest friendly nature in person.I know, they were and are great guys.

My take on this song is that it is Pantera's introduction to the world. Every band, especially these days has a "this is who I am" song. People still call them the cowboys from hell. I'd equate it to "my name is" by Eminem or something like that. It introduces you to their style, their lyrics and their attitude. You should watch some of their tour videos, they're fucking nutty, and Dimebag is one of the best guitarists you will ever listen to... you should cover some of their tracks where his guitar work is heavily featured.

I see what you mean with the lyrics. I always say that -some- metalheads are a bit hypocritical when they talk about rap lyrics, I mean, metal is full of this "badass", "in your face", "I'm gonna fuck you up" kind of lyrics. I think the main difference is that metal community focus a lot more in the instrumental side of the songs, lots of metalheads play some instrument and for most bands the lyrics are an afterthought. If a metalhead reacts to rap music I guarantee the first thing he will say is "Oh god! The music is so boring and repetitive! Is the same loop over and over again and a guy rapping over it". But if you just read the lyrics (and sometimes the delivery too, because pantera has lots of "talk singing" in their verses, so it kinda sounds like rapping) metal and rap have some similarities. Anyway, keep it up with your reactions! Love Pantera, gotta love that groove and that guitar solo!
