This was so helpful PAN, thanks so much. The marketplace is confusing, but your straightforward method gives me clarity. The big takeaway was the difference between waxes and ceramic coating. I get that, but I still don't quite understand what you mean by "Warm Glow". I know the warm glow on antique furniture with paste was vs sprayed newer furniture. In addition, I am not sure where waxes play into this. I know that one should not wax over a ceramic coating, but it seems like I watched on another channel where the car was waxed first, then coated with ceramic. My biggest concern is a coating that will handle the frequent use of a car cover for my daily driver that will not be garaged. During the day, it must sit in the sun if parked in the rear, but in the front, there are shade trees with all of its sap, pollen, and bird droppings. Moreover, I finally realized that a truly "waterproof" car cover is dangerous because while it protects from rainfall, it won't protect from dew, or rising moisture from cement, blacktop, or gravel driveways and streets. The covers can trap moisture under the cover. Can any ceramic coating counteract this problem? On weekends, it probably won't be under cover, as I am driving it more, so UV ray protection becomes important for the body, along with an insulated windshield pad to protect the dashboard. I finally ordered a "water resistant" cover that breathes, to allow moisture to escape. I understand It is also important to remove the cover in hot weather if the sun comes out following a rainstorm. I have seen the "blushing effect" resulting from the sun baking the chemicals in the cover's underside to the paint from a guy's KZbin channel. He faulted the car cover company, but a user pointed out that he failed to remove it after rain storms. All that to say, I need a formula that is easy to apply, slick enough to withstand car covers that may shift with the wind, and protects against the sun, and any moisture that might seep through the surface of the cover while I am at work as I don't commute by car. I think a video on coatings and car covers would be useful.

Put a coat of Optimum Gloss Coat on 3 years ago when I bought the truck and have used various products to help maintain it. What I enjoy about your channel is your thoroughness, attention to detail and honesty. I have no illusions about driving into a brick wall and a paint coating saving the body of my truck. Thanks Pan for another very informative video! My biggest takeaway is that there are coating options out there that I could feel confident in applying to my own vehicles. One additional question though. If you’re a person that takes care of their vehicles and regularly maintains the ceramic coating how do you know when it’s time for reapplication? With routine maintenance you’re always going to have good water beading/sheeting performance, right? Just curious. Thank you again for all the dedication you put into your channel! 😎

I’m a complete novis when it comes to modern methods. Of course I used the bucket and sponge method until I was about 50 years old. Then I started taking my cars to the car washes. I haven’t washed a car since then. I’m retired now and 80 years old, and the new methods excite and amaze me. When I saw this video, I jumped over to the web site for the top rated ceramic coating and bought a kit. My car is relatively new (an all electric Ioniq 5), but in April I had it ceramic coated with a spray product from Walmart. It has a life expectancy of about six months. This is July 29th. Can I use the more protective coating now or should I wait until October? I’m getting ready for my first foam car wash. The temps here have been too high recently and I have direct sun on most of my property. That has delayed my foray into the world of DIY car washing. I have very much enjoyed your videos. Thank you for being so informative .

One of my friends brought me Avalon King to apply on his car for him. I did a full iron removal and clay bar process, followed by a one step light polish and IPA wipe on his car before the application. Avalon King is extremely easy to apply and has some scratch filling properties. However, I find that it loses its water sheeting and water beading ability earlier than Gtechniq. I think they may have sacrificed durability for ease of use.
@MikeSmith-fq5dv
@MikeSmith-fq5dv 3 жыл бұрын
Whats iron removal and clay bar process exactly?
@maxisqt
@maxisqt 2 жыл бұрын
@@MikeSmith-fq5dv Iron flakes off from vehicles and deposits itself in the paint (and other surfaces) of your car, iron also rusts when exposed to water which causes your car to look horrible and orange. The “bleeding” purple you see from iron removal products is the product reacting with iron, it makes it really easy to get rid of those iron deposits. Clay bar is the next step up in terms of surface contaminant removal, tar and other surface contaminants might not be removed from the chemical spray, so after cleaning the car extensively we apply a clay bar and rub it over the surface, surface contaminants get stuck inside the clay bar and are pulled off of the surface. It’s important we then polish to remove any scratches or swirls that were applied in the process, before then applying the coating. Tl:dr; Surface contaminants have to be removed before applying ceramic coating, otherwise you lock these contaminants into your paintwork and the coating won’t provide the desired aesthetic effect since you’ll see all the surface damage and contaminants beneath the coating. Iron removal and clay bar gets rid of these contaminant.

Pan. Great video a lot of good info. I have only used standard wax on my vehicles but thinking about a ceramic coating for a new truck I just purchased. My question is there any disadvantages of a ceramic coating versus wax? If you still have to apply a SI spray every 2 to 3 months you still have that maintenance step as with a wax. Is correcting a contamination issue or surface damage issue more difficult to resolve if the vehicle has a ceramic coating? Thanks again I really enjoy your videos and the information you provide.

Great, informative video, Pan. I was particularly glad to hear your professional opinion about graphene coatings versus ceramic coatings. The main point I gathered from what you said is that there isn't yet a long enough track record for the graphene coatings whereas there is a well-established track record for ceramic coatings which have been perfected over the years and made easier to apply. Let's say I have a 3 to 5 year ceramic coating applied to a brand new car. At the end of the life of the ceramic coating, do you go through the same steps - wash, clay bar, paint correction, and then new ceramic coating? Is it hard to get off the remnants of the old ceramic coating in order to prepare the car for a new ceramic coating?

This is great, watched the whole video. Question - I heard there's a difference between ceramic coatings that come in glass vs. plastic bottles. Is this true? I recently applied 2 coats of Turtle Wax ceramic spray. Is this not a real ceramic coating? Thanks!
@PanTheOrganizer
@PanTheOrganizer 2 жыл бұрын
"Real" ceramic coatings are the ones in glass bottles. They are the ones that last for many years, but they also cost more, and take more time to apply and are harder to apply. Ceramic spray (also known as silica spray sealants) typically last 6 to 12 months, so not as long as their glass bottle counterparts, but also the sprays cost much less, and are easier/faster to apply. That doesn't mean the sprays aren't good. They are great, but for their target audience. But they're not as durable as their glass bottle versions. So you have to see what your budget and experience level is, to make the right choice.

If you're talking about the detail sprays, you should be doing that after every wash regardless of what coating your using. Outside of that they are far superior to any spray on coating in every way. In durability, hydrophobicity, look, and they also have self healing properties. That last part is in response to things like paint swirls.

Thanks! I appreciate your support. :) There aren't many disadvantages of ceramic coatings really, other than you have to be more careful about water spotting, hence why most of them you can get the appropriate top coat to put on top, or use a highly sheeting coating like the AvalonKing, which sheds water quickly. Other than that, I mean you truly get the best possible protection: - best gloss - best slickness - best UV protection - best durability (years vs a few months for regular waxes and sealants) - best chemical resistance (industrial fallout, road salt, bird droppings, tree sap, brake dust, etc) - best hydrophobic properties (water beading and sheeting) - self cleaning properties (car is a lot easier to wash during maintenance washes) You absolutely have to watch a super popular video I made about the differences between waxes, sealants and ceramic coatings here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6ndZK2Ji66gY8k

Thanks for the feedback Anne! Welcome to my channel. You discovered one of the biggest car detailing channels on KZbin as we surpassed 880,000 subscribers and we have over 113 million views! I have been detailing for 26 years and I love to share my knowledge and passion with my viewers. You found the right channel to help you learn everything about detailing. A new car is never new until it's properly detailed. - at the factory, the paint defects are often corrected quickly by rotary polishing which can leave marks and holograms, so polishing corrects those, before you lock that in long term with a ceramic coating for example. - vehicles are then transported by truck, train and boat so they are exposed to the elements, industrial fallout, brake dust, rail dust, etc - vehicles are often left at boat docks (when transported by boat) or in exterior parking lots for weeks or months, again being exposed to the elements - at the dealership, the vehicles are almost always poorly prepped using the same dirty water that was used for all the cars on a given day, and poor washing and drying methods leading to swirls and scratches - at the dealership, a layer of cheap wax or paint sealant is usually applied to attempt to make the paint glossy prior to delivery. It's crucial to remove any previous protection before you apply a ceramic coating, as coatings need to bond directly to a virgin clear coat. If you only plan on applying a regular carnauba wax or paint sealant though, you could decide to skip machine polishing, as those protectants can be applied over existing protection and it's not as crucial to prep the paint as well. I explain all of this in this popular video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5jSqqV5Ypp2g8U So you can better visualize the new car prep process, here are the steps I perform on a brand new car from two of my customers: Tesla Model Y: kzbin.info/www/bejne/naDLnKZurbVohLs Porsche 911 Carrera: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJTOmpysl6ukqZY Audi Q7: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmirdHWJi9OcsK8

Hey Pan, very informative as you all ways are. I finally subscribed, but have been watching your videos for a few months. I have 2 questions for you. 1I just did paint correction and panel prep and applied 303 Graphene coating to my car. Would I be able to apply the ceramic coating over it? If not? How do you suggest I remove it for my car and any remnants of my three year old ceramic coating? 2. Does tbe Armor Coat need a topper? Could you use Gtechnique over the Armor coat if they don’t have one?
@PanTheOrganizer
@PanTheOrganizer 3 жыл бұрын
1. No. Ceramic coatings need to bond directly to virgin well prepped clear coat in order to have maximum durability and performance. If you want to remove your existing protection, the only way to ensure 100% removal is through machine polishing. But I'm confused. You say you did paint correction (which would have removed any previous protection), and then a panel prep, and then applied 303 Graphene Coating. And now you say you have a three year old ceramic coating? Makes no sense. 2. Armor Coat? Do you mean AvalonKing Armor Shield IX ceramic coating? The company says the coating doesn't necessarily require a topper, but I always recommend that people use a silica spray sealant once every 2 to 3 months to ensure maximum performance and durability. I hope this helps.

@@PanTheOrganizer yes it does. I had a ceramic coating, was not sure if my paint correction.graphene prep removed all of it or not. Thank you for your reply! I think I will see how well this graphene coat stands up through the winter. Car is garaged and not driven every day. I will do a new prep and ceramic coat in the Spring. Compared to the ceramic coat, the Graphene coating is no where near as good. Just my opinion. Do you have a one step compound/polish to recommend for my surface prep in the Spring? Do I have to do the full polish and everything before applying, or can I just do an iron remover after washing with a foam cannon? Im not sure if there is any stock wax or coating other than the paint and clearcoat. Thanks again!
@PanTheOrganizer
@PanTheOrganizer 3 жыл бұрын
Ideally you want to specify to the dealership to NOT apply any wax or sealant on the paint prior to delivery. I gave all the instructions for that and why it's important to detail a brand new car here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5jSqqV5Ypp2g8U If the water is beading on your paint, they probably applied some cheap product prior to delivery. The only way to ensure 100% removal of any previous protection is wash, decontaminate, and machine polish the surface (polishing is key here) and then use the paint prep spray or IPA to wipe the entire surface and then you apply the coating. I have a popular ceramic coating application tutorial here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaK0iomgraukgZI

I am a car guy and doing research I had to watch. I guess my question is as you said, ceramic coatings have improved, but so have base coat colors and clear. How long after finishing a complete refinish of a classic truck, with a high end clear would one wait before applying a ceramic coating? After 38+ years (42 or more) but as a certified automotive ASE Master tech since 78. (You have to have two years before awarded certification) but years of hands on work to take the 60-100 question test, 8 to be a Master Tech, then re-certify every 5 years. I am building, restoring completely at 67 C10 to my 6’3” frame but with modern OD automatic and EFI engine and a list very long. I painted my first car in 1979 and 5 others since. This world of aftermarket parts plus paint products has changed as well. Minus body work, but $1,800 in paint product alone is not uncommon for a truck complete. Micro-sanding with a short-stoke (5/16th orbital action) produces a surface that when compounded, then polished and clean with soap and water. After 3-4 weeks, shrinkage is done, solvents have evaporated and chemical cross-linking has occurred. If covered and garaged but not driven, is it “Best Practices” to apply? Retired, disabled and never will own the garage I want as I brought home 4 tool boxes and a truck load of equipment that magically makes a 1 1/2 car garage real small. People don’t realize what “UV” A, B & C can do to fabric, plastics while at work and just sitting in traffic. Yes, they have a garage but spend little time in it than they think. This vehicle is for me and seen the commercials, but felt you did a very good job. Although it is 19 months past the video (May, 20th, 2022) I hit liked abs subscribed even though I had no cell since 2009! Thanks.

Great video Pan!! It's great to clear up some of the confussion over ceramic coatings. They are awesome products, it's a shame some companies and installers, gave them a bit of a "snake oil" reputation due to false claims. About scratches: Gtechniq actually states in it's FAQs that although the coatings on their own are very hard, 9H for Crystal Serum Light shown here, when applied to a panel the coating only adds 3 to 2H to the original clearcoat hardness. Still, I think ceramic coatings do prevent scratches, not in the way most people think (i.e. taking a key, knife, rock to the panel), but in an indirect way as the car is easier to clean and dry meaning less rubbing/touching is required inducing less scratches. Also, I hoped you touched on the top coats, as I find people confused about why should they apply (and more importantly, buy an extra product) that adds hydrophobic properties and slickness...when the ceramic coating is already supposed to do that. Cheers!

It depends how bad the water spots are. You might need to use a water spot remover before the clay stage. And if that doesn’t work, you might need to polish the paint after the clay stage. And then IPA wipe and then you apply the coating. And yes it’s always best to use deionized water for the final rinse after you are done washing your car. Hi Dennis. You have the correct reflex to want to protect your vehicle as early as possible. The best time to actually start protecting your new car is as soon as you take delivery from the dealership. You're in luck, as I have many new car prep videos, where I show all the steps I perform for the interior and exterior, including ceramic coating the paintwork. Here are a few so you understand the process, products, tools and equipment: VW Golf R: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKOUappqhbx9qc0 My own brand new BMW M550i: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqSmnn2AebVmrtE Volvo XC90: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qputgZaaeLqUgZo BMW X3: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3iwiWR3g5einas Mercedes C43 AMG: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5KlcnyLo9WgnZY VW Tiguan: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4WyiHeqd51qsKs Audi RS3: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGWUnnSAm7B3gq8

Superb Pan, I'm going to try the Avalon and thanks for the discount code! Is there a special topper for the Avalon, or is any ceramic topper suitable?

is it safe and/or recommended to use ceramic coating on vehicles without a clear coat. i have a 1989 ferrari and want to apply the best protection, what would you recommend for that vehicle, wax sealer or ceramic coating? love your videos!! thanks for all the energy and hard work you put into your presentations

Thanks Anthony! Welcome to my channel. You discovered one of the biggest car detailing channels on KZbin as we surpassed 890,000 subscribers and we have over 115 million views! I have been detailing for 26 years and I love to share my knowledge and passion with my viewers. You found the right channel to help you learn everything about detailing. Your Ferrari has no clear coat? Are you sure? Pretty much all Ferraris in late 80's and beyond came with a traditional base coat/clear coat system. You should check with a Ferrari dealership near you. Coatings need to bond to clear coat. So if you don't have a clear coat, use a wax or sealant. I have a video on the best liquid waxes and sealants here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6aroppjdsenmqs

@@PanTheOrganizer I have always been a weekend warrior passionate about my car, but I knew I did things wrong, so I simply googled ways to improve cleaning your car and your channel came up. Then over the last 12 months I have watched nearly everyone of your videos, and purchased many products based on your recommendation, including this Armor Shield which with the discount only cost me £40 as I’m in the UK. Your style of creating content is easy to follow which is why I trust your recommendations. I do have one question when using the Armor Sheild, can this be applied to Xpel PPF? Thx Adi

I have a question. I live in Winnipeg and winter is coming I also don't have time to do all the prep work before adding a ceramic coating. Would it be okay to do the coding without all the prep work? Of course I'll wash the car but past that would it be damaging to my paint work to seal contaminants in since they would be there anyways?
@PanTheOrganizer
@PanTheOrganizer 3 жыл бұрын
If you have any existing protection like a wax or sealant, you ABSOLUTELY have to do all the prep work including polishing the surface in order to ensure 100% removal of that old protection before you apply a ceramic coating. Those need to bond directly to a virgin clear coat. Ceramic coatings are no joke. They last for years. But you need to soend time for the initial application. If you don’t want to take the time, then stick to using traditional waxes or sealants. No real prep work needed for those, but you only get a few months durability. There are always tradeoffs in life.

Hey thank you so much for replying!! I have a 2018 sorento. It's never been waxed before. Other than washing it at the car wash and spraying the turtle Wax spray let's say I assume washes off with every wash? Would I have to count that as a coding to be removed?

Hi Pan. I'm a big fan of your channel. I have a F-150. I would like to ceramic coating it. This video is 2 years old. Is it always " de mise" to use these products or i do use a graphene one? It is the first time that i'll do that and you said that the avalon one is very easy to apply.

Graphene or ceramic doesn’t really matter they are near identical in performance as most graphene coatings have a ceramic base in the formula with reduced graphene oxide only as an infusion. Same application methods. Watch my coating application tutorial: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaK0iomgraukgZI
