Fil is a consistently excellent content provider. For those not familiar with his channel - please check it out. The issue with Ken is layered. 1. He is dishonest and deceptive and has been so for quite some time to sell himself and his courses. Experienced musicians have seen this in his content all along. Fil finally put him in the lab and under the microscope and provides unrefutable proof. 2. Ken is unnecessarily critical of artists with exceptional talents and careers and creates content attempting to assert he is better than these artists. 3. Ken’s braggadocio is legendary and unsubstantiated. 4. Ken lacks what every truly great artist has in spades - humility and humbleness. His character has lead to his downfall.

Yup. For a Christian singer he sure suffers from several of the mortal sins. Hubris, arrogance, vanity, and a lot of the cheating points to sloth as well. For the live performance, he had 2 options to compensate for reduced range. He could have sung a different note, maybe an octave down or a different chord note, or at less intensity. Or the band could have transposed the whole thing down a note or so. Piece of cake for session players, but would require some work for lesser bands. And, if they already play guitar in dropped D or such, imagine having to go to dropped C, or lower, or if not changing the tuning, use different fingering, maybe an octave up in spots. So there you have it. Vanity, hubris, and sloth, hand in hand.
@Naniamania3
@Naniamania3 Ай бұрын
@@bjornlangoren3002correct. He’s been getting away with it for so long I’m sure he thought there would be no issue and none the wiser. And as we’ve said - in the absence of humility and in the interest of continuing the ruse, he continue the elaborate deception. And then there’s the issue of vanity…same reason people get plastic surgery, hair plugs, Botox, etc. Ken should just accept his new reality, and learn to live within the boundaries of his current physical abilities. Many great singers do. I guess he missed that whole ‘pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall’ thing. What a tangled web we weave…

@@trentvlak exactly. He’s built a brand that asserts a vocal coach has to be able to have the skill level and ability to perform amazing feats. That’s not true of a coach. A coach is a teacher and mentor who brings out the best in each student. Don Shula wasn’t out on the field but he coached teams to a record number of wins. I don’t think Ken’s ego will accept the true aspect of coaching seeing as his courses state that he’ll teach you to sing better than anyone else…himself included.

Ken claims to be the best volcalist and guitarist in the world, while denigrating some of the best vocalists in history. That is all you need to know. I am a classically trained vocalist and performed for over 25 years and branched out into rock in the 70's. I cringe when I watch Ken strain so much while singing and I don't think his technique is healthy. Ken mimes while singing and playing the guitar while claiming he doesn't. Fil uses science and objective data to prove what is happening however, we live in a post science/truth world where many folks don't care. Like Lance Armstrong, Ken will be crucified until he decides honesty is the best policy. Thanks for bringing up logic and logical fallacies. Education is so important and I really enjoyed the logic courses I took at University. Thanks for sharing.

The response from Ken's followers is not as monolithic as he would have you believe. Those of us who are asking legitimate question have been blocked, ghosted, etc. I've been a fan of Ken's since high school (I'm 51 now) and a student of his for almost 10 years. Something seemed off when watching the concert video. He seemed to be struggling with tone and pitch on some of the lower parts, but was perfectly nailing the higher parts. That alone doesn't make sense. But when Fil perfectly lined up the concert vocal with the original studio vocal, it was a no brainer. Then Ken's response, or I should say "lack of actual response", made it even worse. I've unsubscribed from his channel and email list. I'm also not recommending his singing course anymore.

I've been watching Fil for a few years, starting with his analyses of general music. Not so much pitch correction, etc. You can tell, if you have eyes and ears, that Fil is the biggest fan of music. The joy on his face when he sees an amazing act can't be faked. I think one reason he has pushed this point is that he values integrity in music, and is saddened to see the life sucked out of live performances. The imperfections in live music remind me of playing vinyl--it 's not perfect sound, but there's something indescribably comforting about it. Nick, thanks for your perspective! Everyone forgets that people are very forgiving--look at Hugh Grant, Rob Lowe, Robert Downey Jr, as a few examples. Even that southern cooking lady is back on TV. The one thing we seem to like more than forgiveness for their mistakes is taking people down a notch or two when they fail to admit them.

After being exposed to lip syncing the high register in parts of a song and then choosing not to immediately come clean, vocal coach Ken Tamplin, instead doubled down. His online response was embarrassing. This frustrated reaction of an aging singer past his prime, revealed a sad and older man's dying ego. I've been watching Fil for years. His vocal analysis videos never bash anyone or have anything to do with any one person including Mr. Tamplin. Through the use of pitch monitoring software, Fil politely asks his listeners to pay attention to what the "music industry" has done to recording artists and the music we buy today. Fil may occasionally get a request to analyze an individuals vocals but stay focused on the bigger picture. Lead vocals and harmonies have been auto tuned, pitch corrected and altered by the record labels. It's great if you still have your library of original vinyl, hang on to it and again, remain focused on the bigger picture. Unless the music industry decides to release the original unaltered recordings, future generations will have lost the ability to purchase and listen to the true artistic talent in original recordings ever again. I.E. recording artist, Freddie Mercury, The Bee Gees, The Eagles etc, etc. The record labels have gone in and altered all these old original recordings and reissued them. This is the sad, unvarnished true story Fil has uncovered and is reporting on. For years now, Fil has been analyzing music (as well as teaching and performing) for us to see and understand what the music industry has done, like an Orwellian nightmare come true, Big Brother now controls (owns) another piece of our soul.

Millions and millions of stars and the Lord said ‘the stars are the new subscribers to your vocal course that you will win for me.’ The Lord actually talks to me, you know, I hear what’s being said, and he said to me ‘Get me $18 million by the weekend’, and the Angel of the Lord stands by my side and speaks into my ear and it’s a beautiful thing and I hear what’s being said. It’s a marvellous, marvellous experience; I never thought such a thing could happen - in the name of Jesus! And the Lord spoke to me: he said ‘Stretch forth your hands, TELL the people to put their hands against yours, and I will heal them. Get me $18 million by the weekend. TOUCH THE SCREEN, BUY MY ACADEMY'S VOCAL COURSES!’"

This was a good response to the KT Fiasco. I agree that it's mirroring what's going on currently. A lot of individuals nowadays play fast and loose with the truth while criticizing those who lean more towards the factual side of things. It's downright depressing having to engage individuals who cannot or will not accept objective facts over truth. Mr. Tamplin has every right to defend himself and no one is denying him that, but one has to wonder why he didn't just rest this entire matter after he himself admitted that some backing tracks were used. His talent, whether 30 years ago or today has not been denied. Maybe he needs to amend the slogan for his vocal academy because this fiasco has nothing to do with his ability to teach so dragging this out can only hurt him more.

This is not just about Ken. Reader, you can push a button and sing with better pitch than anyone who's ever lived .... but its all fake. It's also an industry standard. Pitch monitoring software shows it. AI won the entire music industry with Autotune, Pitch Correction, and Lip Sync concerts. Vocals, faked by the singers and covered up by the media. Widespread vocal fakery by virtually all mainstream acts, then covered up by the music media makes the media fake too. A bit of pitch correction isn't necessarily as bad as some claim. Sure, if you are going through a whole vocal track and having to correct everywhere, it's a bad sign, but the sad truth is that artists just don't have the money to spend weeks in the studio until they get the perfect take these days, so a small bit of correction here and there is understandable. It's just when it's overused, it's bad.

@@RevStickleback here's my opinion. First as a musician, moderator of music group, editor of arts zine etc, the fake vocals sound very bad, like Astro turf looks. Next when I ask musicians if you've taken 2 hours to learn how to breathe for singing and solve pitch problems, 90% say, no I'd rather push a button. Next most all except a few pop stars record in their own studios and have lots of time to correct singing problems. Use fake if you want, but label it, cause many can tell and it doesn't sound good, it sounds like generic elevator music
@RevStickleback
@RevStickleback 28 күн бұрын
@TomHendricksMusea It depends on the level. For stars with big record label backing, you should have the time and money to do it properly. The irony is that it's often these people make the most egregious use of the software, as they weren't plucked for stardom for their talent. For smaller artists who rely on playing live for income, they can't afford it, and will have to take the odd shortcut. The fact that they are primarily live musicians though will mean that they will have to be at a pretty good level already. Overused auto tune sounds horrible, I agree, but that's not what I am talking about.

I luvd Wings of Pegasus, reviewing and analyzing intelligently all sorts of popular music. And I found it very interesting when he first 'uncovered' the use of pitch correction etc. in so many great live music events 'after the fact', and therefore most people would never be able to here the original sound from those concerts ever again. But for me anyways, I don't give a shite about Ken Tamlin, and whether he mimes or pitch corrects or whatever, but not only Tamlin.... all this stuff on Wings of Peg channel regarding which and when some artist is pitch correcting or whatever. Ok, again, I found it interesting when the point was first made by Wings of Pegasus about the crazy use of techniques by artists to make their voices sound better, and that even ole timey great concert films of the greats have been 'voice-tampered with'. But now Wings of Pegasus is just all about using software to analyze voices and see how close to pitch perfect they are.... or to investigate if an artist is singing with performance enhancing electronics. Can he ... Wings of Pegasus... just get back to listening to wonderful performances, and the analyzing, discussing, and evaluating them... And ok, use that pitch monitoring software as a complement once in a while, but don't make the pitch monitoring software the star of the channel. That's what I'd like anyways.. but it seems I'm in the minority. Seems most would rather listen to 20 pieces about the veracity of a youtube vocal coach pitchman, rather than discussing performances by Bob Dylan, Ella Fitzgerald, John Prine, The Slits, The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Holmes Brothers, Joe Cocker, Glen Campbell, The Pogues, Joan Jett, Joan Stafford etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc.

All the videos that Fil does are in response to requests he gets from viewers. Viewers send him a particular performance, and ask him to look at it and answer a question about it. Unfortunately, so many performances are pitch corrected now that almost everything he's sent has been PC. He always makes the point that one of the reasons he hates PC is because he doesn't think that the singers he's been asked to look at need it. He's sticking up for the singers, whose individual and unique voices are being ruined by PC, not being made better. He has had lots of requests that don't have anything to do with vocal manipulation, but it does seem to be the thing that most people sending him requests are interested in at the moment. I get tired of it as well, but I know that Fil isn't picking the videos he analyses. I just wish viewers would ask him to look at videos for other reasons. He rarely gets asked to look at guitar players anymore, which was the kind of videos he made when he started his channel.

He's said that anyone can download the pitch monitoring software and use it themselves. If I was really that curious about a song, that's what I would do. I don't know why others aren't doing that...they could get an answer to their question in a matter of minutes. But its request after request asking if a performance has been pitch corrected. If its a recent performance there's a 99.99% chance that it has been. I'm only really interested when it turns out that a much older performance has been pitch corrected. Ken is a bit of a fraud really, living on long past glory. As we get older our voices change, and that normally means doing different stuff with a more limited range (or putting up with a less than perfect performance). Think of some of the greats from the sixties and seventies that still do the odd tour here and there - we love them but the performance now isn't the same one they did when they were twenty. (...and imagine if they lip synched to recording they did in 1970, they'd get crucified) Personally, I'm only just finding my true voice after four decades, learning to sing where my voice is, rather than trying to sound like everyone else. It's actually a lot of fun, hearing the real character come out. The reason Ken's argument doesn't make a lot of sense is because gaslighting never does.

I know a good deal about both audio and electronics, as well as basic physics, (speaker design work, sound man for a band, and some studio engineering, as well as an electronics tech for 50 years, and doing high-end equipment repair for a government lab. I know the tech. Fil showed us the data. He brought the receipts, as they say these days. The Tamplin character is lying based on his comments. He has no answer regarding the meaning of the 'scope waveforms presented, waveforms that tell the entire picture to anyone who knows how to review audio on a digital oscilloscope, so he reverts to muddying the waters, setting up strawmen, etc. He reso[ponds with all of the tricks of a con artist instead of explaining anything about the actual data, which is a shame because he's probably competent at what he does. But liars are liars. They need not make sense. It's just what they do and who they are. They will lie about the most ridiculous things, apparently for some psychological reason, which I simply assume is their personal fears, insecurity and lack of self-respect. They just never grew up. As you mention, it's very much a common and major problem recently. The liars are in now charge.

I''ve had classical singing lessons for 5+ years (belle canto(predominantly by the Methodo pratico of N.Vaccai(tenor)) from when I was 23, and there imho is no way an online course can be as good as irl singing lessons ever. About 6 years ago I saw a Ken yt video and was immediately turned off by his salesman attitude and arrogance. I am by no means a great technical good singer, and not a great songwriter either and don't get me started about how bad I am on abusing a guitar. But I do know quite a few things about singing techniques etc. online courses cannot replace a irl singing teacher ever. IMHO it is a total waste of money. Fil of WOP is a hero for exposing the fakery that is to common in music, post production has in many cases gone too far. Live performances are too often nothing more than a sing-along over pre-recorded audio, and audiences are robbed of their money. Ken is just one of very many who do/have done this. Live should be live performed as a total live not faked, half baked by using backing tracks etc. I don't even like drummers using click tracks or metronomes to keep on and in time, but that's me. Personally Ken gets on my nerves, he is so full of himself and thinks he's a better singer then for example Freddie Mercury, Paul Rodgers or David Coverdale. He criticizes them and then he shows you how it should be sung in his opinion without considering someone's naturel vibrato for instance etc. I do think that's one of the reasons a lot of people don't like him. The lip-syncing during that live show and in the studio is a fact, but I do think he can sing, although he might be knowledgeable, I don't like his singing, he's a one trick belter and that's fine but he lacks any vocal diversity or emotional interpretation in my opinion. The thing is, vocal coaches are mostly failed musicians/singers that weren't special or talented enough to get to the big stage. It does seem that he's somehow successful in the vocal coaching business and I do think the whole hateful reaction video's are unnecessary and disproportionate. But that's the risk of having a very personal connected online business, one mistake or a not politicly correct remark and they burn you at the social media stake! I think this was a fair summary of what happened. Fil also said something that is worth mentioning and that is the fact that the videos Fil was asked to analyze have been removed from Tamplin’s channel _after_ Fil uploaded his analysis. Fil’s response was pretty unanswerable: Why would you remove the videos that can prove you were singing live? Notice that no one is even trying to argue that isolating the vocal line analyzing its signatures in time and pitch is inconclusive. Tamplin did not make any effort to refute the validity of the software and the comparisons of vocal lines from multiple sources by doing his own analysis of vocal signatures. Instead, he removed the videos and now no one else can analyze them. What other conclusion can we draw from these facts? Fil is careful here to let us make the final inferences ourselves.

I have to say that I genuinely like so many of the singers that Ken Tamplin likes. He emulates some of them very well, while he doesn't totally nail the timbre and tone of some other singers. I just attribute that to the particular timbre and tone of his voice which is more like a baritone. He definitely does have quite a range. Since I have seen so many of his videos I see him as a friendly and very enthusiastic guy. It is a bit deceiving that he seems to be using overdubs (or studio tracks) during some of his live shows. If he may not be able to hit some of the really high notes as accurately any more, I would think he would adjust his voice to sing notes that are more in his current range of singing to substitute for the really high notes in order to be honest and believable in his live shows. As many people have mentioned, I have questioned what the tongue thing is all about since I can't see any practical use for sticking it out a bit. Anyway, this Ken Tamplin drama is quite interesting, and I don't have so much of a negative opinion of him. However, I can understand that many people (especially his students) want to know the truth about any overdubbing (or lip-syncing) he may be doing during his live shows.

I completely agree about Fil, who is a great guy and is very knowledgable about performance. He doen't have an axe to grind; he uses scientific analysis to make his point. Ken needs to grow up and just admit that he is not Steve Perry.

What you are saying about the division in today's society in the US is so true, Mr Nick. And the implication is obvious, though unstated by you in what is obviously a musical and not political channel. Vote Blue and start on the road to putting trump out of sight for ever.

The man lied. Brian Johnson is out there giving his all, which doesn’t sound like much nowadays, but…I learned in University that it’s not always about playing all the notes it was that they were implied . Least Jazz anyways….just meaning, that some small variants can add to a show’s unique sound. It was weird to me that by choice I stayed further out for ACDC. The sound was so good. I was up close for Van Halen in 2015 12th row in front of Ed. Watching god from up close. Sound again was great, but different venues. Well, not matter what venue you play in or perform whatever artistic show you’re doing remember the ones who don’t know how to appreciate the human element to music will always want it just like the CD, or on YT or Spotify 🤣 What happened to the ketchup chips 😢
