If you want to see more really old British traditions check out the Atherstone ball game. Once a year the people of Atherstone get together and a big ball is released at 3PM, everyone then kicks the shit out of each other until 5PM, at which time the person with the ball is the winner. The shops have to board up the windows the entire town stops for it, it’s been going since medieval times like 1200 or something like that.

If it's any consolation, we Brits struggle with the pronunciation of Gloucester, too. The name originates from a Roman Fort called Glevum (much easier to pronounce), which was situated where current day Gloucester is located.
