The main reason why all of the Galar names don't have stuff like city or town in their names is because UK place names tend to have suffixes in them that work kinda the same. The -hurst sufffix, for example, means 'wooded hill' and and -bury means 'fort', and there's a lot more of these. So they usually do imply either a landmark that the settlement was built on or what the location's historical purpose was. And that was your useless trivia for the day :)

Here in Canada, we also don't have that many with City or Town as part of the name. There are exceptions (Quebec City, for example), and probably more than I know, but majority of the ones I know aren't like that. I don't personally know the origins of ones like Brampton or Toronto or Hamilton (a mix of indigenous words taken for names, prefixes and suffixes with often forgotten meanings, and named after people, I believe), but not a ton of more obvious ones. Even the cities I know in the US aren't all like that, though that's probably more because I don't know as many of them and some might, I just never hear it properly said (like people always just saying New York even when they mean New York City). Honestly always thought it more odd to hear them as part of the names in Pokemon, like Saffron City, though I didn't notice it as much in some gens, like Hoenn having Petalburg and Rustboro
@zuivbal69513 жыл бұрын
There are regional differences with these as well. Traditionally in Scotland place names would be formatted 'mains of x' meaning basically like 'farm of x'. In Northern England however it was formatted the other way around, so 'x mains'. The lines are blurred since the 1800's though as 'new towns' have not followed the traditions of place name creation. I live in an area in Scotland called Newmains and there are places in Northern England that have been named 'mains of x' so the old rules have been kinda ripped up. Further to this predominantly English people who wanted to increase the value of their properties changed the place names from 'mains' to 'manor' in order to 'gentrify' the area. We think gentrification is a new thing but people have always tried to present themselves as higher class than they actually are. If you live in a place called 'x manor' it's probably historically just been dwellings set up near a large farmhouse or farmland area. 'X-Burghs' are traditionally Scottish and northern English as well as 'x-touns or tons', you've got loads of Scots place names like 'meikle' 'hiech' and 'nether'. For one of the most diverse countries on earth with the history of our regions what we got in terms of representation in sword in shield was 'freezington'. In my (probably biased) view they missed out big time not delving into Scottish culture for sword and shield. The 'two heroes' could have represented both the two great auld nations and our desire to come together for the greater good but there's always been an undertone of angst between the two. What we got was doggos that live in the woods and absolutely no actual history beyond the story of this event that happened, then you catch them and box them forever.

I know a lot of people bash these games for being too easy, dexit, etc. But I personally love them. As a competitive player, the additions they made to make it less time consuming to train competitive mons is soooo welcome and overdue. The exp candies are not to make the game baby easy for story mode, but to make it easier to level an imperfect pokemon to 100 to hyper train them. It's rather ironic that the people that complain about them making the game 'too easy' are the casual players who aren't even good at pokemon 😂 I'm a grown man, I don't expect the story mode to be difficult when they were never meant to be challenging to adults since the very first game

I realize some people like watching these videos to compare to their own experiences playing these games, but choosing games that are slightly less well-known could be interesting since people wouldn't necessarily know what to expect. Regardless of what you choose, I'm definitely looking forward to the next one. And 100K subs soon - it's long overdue. :)

Sword and shield are probably my favorites in the series because of the quality of life changes and the V/Vmax pokemon

Agree. And the rivals and gym leaders designs and personalities are much more memorable than simple good friend cardboard cutout rivals or asshole with no development 1 and 2.

I love this game. I don't understand why people hated it so much. The pokemon community can be so toxic that I immediately assume someone is awful if they say they're a fan of pokemon. My only complaint was that it was too short. I'd have liked one long, tough dungeon or something. But I enjoyed gen 8.

Hopefully this is at least a novel SwSh complaint: I found the end of Shield really lackluster, in part because SwSh favours sweeping so strongly that the only way to use *any* of the stall tactics I designed my all-Ghost stall team around was to *deliberately waste my own time* not attacking pokemon I could take out in two hits, but also because the AI completely refuses to engage with the Stealth Rock/Perish Body Cursola setup I was so excited to use. No, the AI will never switch into Stealth Rock to avoid fainting to the Perish counter. No, this turning the first pokemon in every team into a free knockout is not interesting. Yes, half the time I knocked the first pokemon out before the perish counter could finish going down. I imagine the entire game would have been like that if I hadn't been locked out of most ghost types until after the sixth gym. And of course Raid-style battles are Sweepers Only because they're immune to everything else. I spent the whole game waiting to have fun and then it didn't deliver.

As I watch this having just started playing a SwSh demake Rom hack, never owning a Switch, I am sad about all of the comments saying the game is so easyand a guide is not needed. These games are meant to be intros to JRPGs. If you have played Pokemon all of your life, of course the recent gens are easy, because you know how they work. Game Freak intentionally designs games for players of all ages who are NOT genre savvy, in case they got a new customer. As someone who last played a RPG video game in the 1980s, where they had no graphics, only text, I do rely on guides/online walkthroughs, because in essence I am trying to learn a new language. I do not yet have the experience to intuit what to do autonatically, so I do need the handholding. In essence, I am the target audience of the game and the guide. At least these guides do not use invisible ink to hide how to have tea and no tea in your inventory at the same time (yes, that really was in an actual game I played when I was in the single digits agewise and how the guidebook was back then. Regi puzzles have nothing on dealing with being on a spaceship with an Infinite Improbability Drive as your home planet was just destroyed to make way for an interstellar bypass. 😂).
