I Guyana we cultivate an Asian variety of rice from the Oryza sativa which is more widely know and use today throughout the world The African variety of rice in the Niger Delta and the South of the United States Carolina gold rice are from a lesser know variety of Oryza glaberrima 85% of rice planted today is from the Asian variety Oryza sativa rice or the Asian rice cultivated about 13,500 to 8,000 yrs ago Oryza glaberrima rice or the African rice cultivated about 3,500 to 3,000 yrs ago
