I've been getting a lot of requests lately for an update on the Toad sculpture that was made with Paper Cement Clay. There have also been quite a few questions about the mix - I've tried to keep up with the comments, but I apologize for being a little slow sometimes... 😋

Lizard looks like it’s “fluorescing” cement and concrete will do that. Efflorescence is a natural phenomenon that occurs in any material that contains cement (lime) and comes in contact with water. The process involves natural salts migrating out of the concrete (or mortar, block, or brick), in a. chain reaction triggered by water and carbon dioxide. How to avoid: make sure your cement mix isn’t too wet. Make sure it’s 100% dry before paint and sealer.

Excellent - that's something we can do, if we're careful. Thank you so much for the idea.

Jonni, I have lurked on your channel for years and been in awe of your creations, I did paper mache as a child and a teen, but since most of my creations as an adult have been focused on outdoor displays (I am a big Halloween decorator) I have been frustrated that I could never consider paper mache, because i was afraid my work would dissolve into a soggy mess, Since I discovered your videos for an outdoor recipe only a few weeks ago, my imagination has been swirling with possibilities. and now an update! I am delighted. I always used paper towels torn in strips on my childhood projects, and have been reluctant to try a paper clay recipe because I never got the results I wanted from sculpting clay. Slowly building layers with the strips seems to give me more control and I loved the smooth surface that paper towels gave me. I would like to experiment with this recipe and using the strip method, but I wanted to check with you if you had any cautions or concerns before I embark on my Halloween Project. Thank you and your channel so much for all the inspiration!

Thanks for the update! I used your cement clay recipe for two sculptures 2 weeks ago and love it. The bigger one is about 60cm and the other just a bit smaller. I added some powder colour to the mix and it has come up great. Yesterday I used my Dremel to clean up my carved areas and added a small amount of acrylic paint, and today I have sealed it ready for the garden :)

OH THAT'S WHY! THANK GOD! I just tried your paper mache clay recipe yesterday--i usually work with plaster for my sculptures, but I wanted to attempt something more pliable--but it just didn't seem to work quite right. IT WAS WURTH JOINT COMPOUND! Omg, I am so happy. I immediately want to try a different brand!

Yes, I have been wondering how did it turn out. I have made several of your recipes for my kids, and one of them is turning into quite the talented little sculptor. We were curious about recipes for garden statues. Thank you for doing all this experimenting for us. Very useful information for the hot and humid climate we have here in Belize. Much appreciated. ❤ 🇧🇿

Thanks for exposing the shortcomings of Wurth brand compound--I remember to avoid Dap whenever I do get around to buying some, and I woulda pounced on Wurth. My guesses about the lizard damage are it could be calcification residue from rock salt used on a nearby porch or sidewalk. Or, it might be impact damage from hailstones that shattered the layer of sealant, making it detach and get opaque. OR...it's a sign it's about to undergo some kinda Godzilla-size growth spurt. Say, how big IS your friend's yard?

Have you tried a product called dry lock. It's what people making aquarium back grounds use. You won't have the really long dry time and it should be water tight without sealing it. I would probably seal it anyway to keep the paint safe on top. But you basically just paint it on with a couple of coats. You can also color it to make your base color.

I've used that paint on the basement walls, and it seemed to do a good job. I haven't tried it outside, though. If it works in aquariums, it would probably work in the rain, too - but I haven't tried it.

It looks like that salamander was set outside in winter, having not fully dried yet. cement needs a lot of time to fully dry. even when hardened, it might contain some moisture. not sure if it's because the mixture wasn't...well....thoroughly mixed.

Hi jhonny i have a question for you i really wanna make a peacock sculpture and i planned everything about his body but i'm not concerned about how to make the feathers realistic cause they have a lot of kind of hairs attached ro the quill i think it's called, and as well i'm not sure about how to have a support for the feathers because i want to make a peacock opening his tail, so what do you suggest
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 9 ай бұрын
Will you be keeping the peacock inside? I have a video about making feathers, but I don't know how well it would work for that particular kind of feather. You can see the video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIPYhp6EZ9qdnJosi=h9lcQDQ4rA_JJc3i

@Steven_cole I tinker with things a lot, and I've been turning this over in my mind...then I noticed the large bamboo folding fan on the wall above my bathroom window. Each blade of this wall fan is 2 feet long, and it folds out almost in a half-circle shape. I don't know how large your sculpture is, but there are many sizes of paper-covered wooden fans available on the cheap. The even spacing of the blades would make a fine armature for any arrangement of a peacock tail.

Gosh it's been a long time since I made it, so I can't remember. You do need to let it cure until it's completely dry, but you don't want to hurry the process. Plan on giving it several weeks, at least. Have fun!
