The first 3 Paper Mario games focus more on subtle tongue in cheek humor and witty character interactions. While Mario and Luigi focus on a more boisterous and wacky slapstick oriented type of humor. Both games are humorous, but in their own way. Sticker star on the other hand focuses only on making paper/sticker jokes. Color splash is a little better in that because there are some genuinely funny jokes hidden under all the visual gags, paper/paint related wordplay, and self referential jokes.

I like to think of Colour Splash and Sticker Star as a separate series from the rest of the Paper Mario games. These games look much better if you don't compare them to the masterpieces that are Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario.

Super paper mario is not even close to a masterpiece, probably the most overrated game in the series (i know that ttyd gets more praise but the game kinda deserves some of it). Color splash is a paper mario game, sticker star isn't.

Dude, writting in Paper Mario was pretty great. And this time, they're just trying to play the whole "irony" card at all the beaten Mario formula stuff. But there is no irony or comedy in doing exactlyt he same stuff, but with a whitty comment. "Oh, no, here comes that Bowser again, kidnapping that princess!" - if you just say that over the kindapping being bland and you still having to save Peach. You need to do something more that just acknowledge the pattern to be ironic. Have Bowser steal her in Peach-shaped trap, have rotating doors on Peach's sell, have Peach greet her prison guards by name and ask them how their families are doing. You have an RPG, with a chanse to make things different, not bound by, for some reason, obligatory Mario formula of collect stars, save princess. But instead you make just another Mario game - and this time the gimmick machine pointed at "Paint" as the gimmick that makes it all so different. But, you see, I'm not ranting about Nintendo sucking their thumbs dry for ideas while not really caring for Paper Mario, with them having a place-holder instead of the plot and cutting corners as with having all the NPCs being Toads, overall making this "Mario another one" instead of a memorable game - no, I'm not doing THAT, I'm just being ironic.

Well, in this fairy tale land where the same guy can kidnap the Princess of the kingdom over and over again, and everyone being extremely casual about it, something like this could happen. I mean, in original Paper Mario, Peach was pretty friendly with her captors already, she could be on first name basis with them by this time. Anyway, I was just talking about a way of making this a real joke and not just stating what is happening, while figuratively rolling back your eyes. I mean, if we talk sence, Toads wouldn't be talking so casually, as they did in the game. Saying "Oh, hi Bob, how's the wife?" to the same guy that tried to rob your store a dozen time is exactly what would happen in a comedy. If you don't like any of the examples I've given, here's another one: Peach gets thrown in the cell, sits on the bed, pulls a book from under the pillow and continues reading from where she left it last time she was captured.

Its the most solid of the series, it's not perfect by any means but again still the most solid in terms of story, gameplay, characters and so on. Though could be argued that Super Paper Mario had the better story or at least one that is more darker then Thousand Year Door.

Super Paper Mario = Best Paper Mario. It has the best story, the best visuals, the best soundtrack, the best gameplay (it's not turn based, but a great platformer with RPG elements). It's control was nice and simple, It had the best partners, with bowser, peach and luigi, the best overworld, etc.

The Problem with the Card system in fact is the following: There is no reason to fight. What do you get? Color and Money. You dont Need Color if you dont fight, and all you need money for is to buy cards, but you already used cards to fight, so in the end, it sums up to 0 effect. And in an RPG it is kinda bad, if you have no reason to fight, because usually they are defined by their battlesystems.

You really need to get around to making an episode for TTYD Jirard. While Color Splash is leaps and bounds better than Sticker Star it still feels like a shallow experience once all is said and done. It's sad that so many people are lowering their expectations and settling for less with the Paper Mario series. Not even the most devoted Color Splash supporter has been able to say that this game is the best the series has to offer. It's just acceptable at best, and ultimately no one will think of this game when asked of the series' greatest and most iconic moments.

I didn't play Paper Mario: Sticker Star, but I tried watching a playthrough of it. It was REAAALY boring to watch, since it's writing was awful and it didn't have enough originality to keep me interested. I legit fell asleep several times trying to finish the playlist of episodes and never finished it. Then I watched Crunchii's live stream of Paper Mario: Color Splash. I honestly didn't expect much from the game and ended up enjoying most moments of the streams in the end. The jokes are so well written it spawned several live stream chat memes, such as "Leston". I wouldn't say it's a good Paper Mario game, but does look like a good Mario game from what I watched. Also, you were talking about the "things" encountered in the game and how they were one of your favorite parts. Funny you should know they actually originated in Paper Mario: Sticker Star. They literally only went on the battle stage and did something to the enemies with barely any special effects or unique settings, so they looked horrible and out of place back then, and they are, in fact, one of the many *things* about the game people have issues with, but they did improve, at least.

I was 100% ready to hate this game from the reviews, but I really, really had a fun time with it? I haven’t played a thousand year door and probably won’t until it’s ported or on some switch virtual console, but the writing in color splash is way better than paper or super paper mario, and the battle system was honestly pretty engaging outside of two boss battles where I just ran out of cards and had to go to a roshambo temple to grind for coins. Absolutely worth buying at the clearance prices most wiiu games are going for now.

I never played Sticker Star but I've played the original Paper Mario (never personally finished it, watched my sister do it though), Thousand Year Door (never finished, last time I played I got closer than we've ever got but still no) and Super Paper Mario (finished 2 times? it's my favorite, I love it!). This games looks very fun though, even with whatever problems the battle system might have I'd still like to play it (if I had a Wii U)

I'm guessing no one in 2016 can shut up about games that were made a decade ago. I mean, I played Thousand Year Door, but I don't see this as a bad game. And I also played Sticker Star, and I don't like it because of the lack of humor, not because of the generic worlds, combat, or severe lack of story. Color Splash is prettier and funnier then Thousand Year Door. This doesn't change the fact that Thousand Year Door has better characters, plot and combat system but the perfect Paper Mario game is a composite of this, Thousand Year and elements of Super Paper Mario; not just Thousand Year Door 2

I think the writing is the best, and the thing cards are great. The battle system apart from thing cards, and the time it takes to make money are the worst. I would also really like a level up system that makes battles worth it. Great video.

Yeah, uhm... I don't get what you mean 'not associated with humour'. Never played any paper mario games, but it's clearly a tangential development from Super Mario RPG. Having played that and Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, it's pretty obvious the entire Mario RPG family of games leans heavily on humour, in jokes, and poking fun at the tropes associated with mainstream mario games. That's how the stories have worked... Comedy is the core of most of these games...

Damn right about that. I certainly find the Paper Mario Games to be the best that Nintendo has done with Mario, But I also find each Game to be Incredibly Unique. Even if there are flaws, I do believe one can find enjoyment in games like Sticker Star and Color Splash. In Fact, I'll even argue that most of the Biased Responses come from people who have NEVER actually touched the game in the first place, and have only watched Let's Play's or Walkthroughs of the Game Only. They're Spoiled, Entitled Brats who think their way is the ONLY way, and nothing else. This is why I don't bother with Fanbases people. Make your own opinions, don't base it on the majority.

MY problem with Sticker Star and Color Splash are the boss fights. ESPECIALLY since you have to have a "Thing" Card to beat some of them. It's unfair, and I feel like the "Thing" cards should just be strong moves. MAking them required is frustrating and annoying.

The problem I had with Colour splash was how many taps it took just to launch a single attack. It breaks the casual flow of the game having to rest the pad to click the card to select an enemy, pick a card, paint it, flick it, doing this you go from buttons / touchpad. Now I understand that it's a minor gripe, but it's main battle function, you do it all the time, all those seconds really do add up. I wasn't a fan.

the problem with color splash, and why people were preemptively bashing for being similar to sticker stars, is that the combat is really boring, it takes too long to do anything in battle, and you doesnt get anything really worth your time. now compare with other games that have a "card theme" like kingdom hearts chain of memories, not only is the combat fast paced, in both of its versions, but you have so much control over how you want to play! the problem here is that, just like with star fox zero, nintendo focused more on the tablet controller, than in making a fun game. now say what you will about SFZ, MOST people were bothered for one reason or another with the controls(and there's a something to be said about physical limitations, expecialy when we talk eye-hand coordination) and the majority of those who actually did enjoy it, were only able to, on subsequent playthroughs.

you forgot whenever you get a big paint star, the remix but very fimular opening sound from the FIRST ORGINAL N64 "PAPER MARIO" [sorry if all caps] will play.. anndd.. there are replica cards which are somewhat back ups. but they dont work on ANYBOSS AND STORY PROGRESSION [except the ninja shy guy :D] also you can defeat bowser with a thing card, the FINAL HIT. zackscottgames used the teapot xD PLUS.. you did forgot to put in enemy cards will run away from "fearsome foes" or bosses and midbosses.and lastly, when you see the manual icon in the game.. you will see a historical past story of the topic, and plus. they tell you spoilers saying.. "you cant read this till you achieved {get the big paintstar or complete the big mission!}" and the rescue squad who have rescue Z as a series on nintendo

Thank you so much for this- I honestly was a really big fan of Sticker Star, but it was only good for one game and didn't see it as a permanent concept l would enjoy. When Color Splash was announced l was more, "meh" and didn't even acknowledge the games release nor did l plan on buying it for awhile, but seeing this l'm honestly pretty excited. The battles look much more strategic than Sticker Star, the worlds look exciting and fun. The game looks funny which l will enjoy so much since the last two weren't that great comedy wise... I haven't played the game yet, but regarding the issue of "experience points", does increasing your maximum paint allow you to use stronger cards (with a higher paint cost, if that's a thing) that would be prohibitively expensive at lower paint capacity levels? If so, then this would make paint capacity level increase your damage potential.

Paper Mario: Splash makes me sad... No leveling up, no reason to fight anything but the bosses. and a long drawn out game with honestly no good pay off. This game if the weakest one in the entire Paper Mario series. (no I have not played sticker star, nor do I intend to.) I'm fine with an action card battling system (look how well KH CoM turned out!) but this system in place felt cheap and gimmicky as if to say "We have this new pain mechanic... How do we incorporate that into the battle system? oh I know! Lets force them to use up their paint on cards so they feel as if they will never have enough paint!"

... actually calling it Paper Luigi sounds pretty good.Luigi is a lot better for over-the-top goofy humor that the last two games crossed into, and it would hopefully allow something different for the main series.

Here's a shocker. I didn't mind the gameplay changes in Sticker Star or this. I don't give a hoot what they do with the gameplay as long as it's not broken and it's still satisfying to stomp enemies. My issue with the new Paper Mario games is the story and characters. Each game in the original trilogy was darker and more large-scale than the previous, with Super Paper Mario going so far as to depict the chaotic end of an entire world. After that game, Sticker Star just felt extremely underwhelming with its extremely predictable run-of-the-mill Mario plot that was done far better in the N64 game. Color Splash isn't a bad game by any means, but I can't bring myself to like it as much as the first 3 because at the end of the day, it still built on Sticker Star rather than the ones before it. It improves in many ways, but Sticker Star simply is not a good game to take inspiration from, period.

After playing super paper Mario and learning about 2d and 3d planes this just feels weird having a 2d character on a 3d plane which would be impossible for them to see. Super paper Mario did that concept right

One way the battle system could easily be fixed is by NOT having every attack be consumable. Why not just keep the jump and hammer be 24/7 attacks. That way if you didn't have the exact card, you still had a means of dishing out some pain.

It doesn't even make sense. Why does Mario need to rely on a card just to do something he's always been able to do? I can understand cards like the iron jump or eekhammer, because they add to Mario's basic abilities, but the regular jump and hammer? That makes no sense. Plus, he can jump and hammer all over the place outside of battle, so why does he need a card to jump and hammer in battle?

Lorraine LeCube Same here. I liked it because he explained the end of each game's story. If I was interested in buying or playing the game I'd skip it, otherwise it provided closure. Now the videos just feel a bit incomplete.
