I often went emotional towards this game, like Jolene and Mush, everything about Vivan's life prior to joining Mario, TEC's dilemma with Peach, but being a soft, romantic whimp at heart, Bobbery and Scarlette just broke me so much I actually ended up crying the first time. This game's writing is good y'all (for the most part)

Whichever partner you have out tries to reassure Podley that he had his reasons for withholding the letter, but it doesn't change the fact that his cowardice made him deny fulfilling Scarlette's last request, allowing Bobbery to wallow in pain and misery. It feels like the writing wants us to sympathize with his indecision, given Bobbery was in mourning and blaming himself, but he just comes across as selfish and spineless.

Time to not only increase our stock of recipes by giving Zess T a Cookbook (you'd think it'd make her lay off the name calling a little, but she still holds a mean grudge), but also to meet everyone's favorite Paper Mario character for one reason or another: Flavio! The way he speaks, I always imagined that he would have some kind of accent, though I can't place what. Either way, he's giving Mario and Co. the chance to go to Keelhaul Key, so anchors aweigh! ...At least, they WILL be aweigh, when we get a navigator. That said, we should also address the elephant in the room with this part: Podley's tale about Admiral Bobbery and Scarlette. Tragic as Bobbery's tale is, and understandable why he wouldn't want to go to sea again, Podley is almost universally disliked for holding onto Scarlette's last message to her husband, all because he didn't have the nerve to give it to Bobbery when he could have used her words of comfort most. He admits he was cowardly, but it doesn't change the fact that he denied fulfilling Scarlette's final request and allowed Bobbery to wallow in misery and self-reproach...

Something neat this remake does with recipes; In the original, you had to cook the dish to add it to your recipe list. Here, simply adding it to your inventory is enough to add it to the recipe list! This means, if you handle certain troubles, it’ll save you the effort of cooking certain meals. Flavio is an annoying fop, in the best way possible! Also, he does something near the end of the chapter that’s honestly my reason why he’s among my favorite characters in this game. Screw Podley!

I don’t hate Podley for keeping the letter from grieving Bobbery in the moment. It’s hard to work around grieving people to give them the relief they need. I do hate him a little for not giving it to him years later. Not as much as Beldam or Doopliss though. My sister and I love to dunk on “flavor Fabio” now and again. I think our funniest joke is wondering if when Flavio is blowing smoke, nearly always, does smoke come out of his butt? Or would it be lemonade? He is a sentient lemon after all. Lmao PS Masae’s reaction to Four Eyes on the ship is the cutest I’ve ever heard. Pa-Patch is one of my favorite characters in the game. I hope she likes him too.

Flavio has different dialogue for each of the four options you're given, and in each one he misunderstands the word. He mishears "emotion" as "erosion", "thrills" as "chills", and "money" as "honey". You actually have two avenues for confirming Bobbery's identity. You can talk to Podley, as Masae did, or you can talk to Prof. Frankly. Bobbery's tale is really sad. It was terrible of Podley to keep Scarlette's letter from Bobbery all this time, but his reaction was very human, in my opinion; plus, he admits his cowardice. I've always felt sympathetic to him as a result, but I fully understand if people resent him.

Be glad Podley at least admits that he was a coward for not fulfilling Scarlett's last request for years. I can't really hate him for it either despite me myself being an absolute dirtbag who can never keeps his mouth shut and thus gets people in trouble when I was in elementary school. I kind of wish Mario pats Podley on the back. Being able to cook something with two ingredients makes cleaning out the storage faster and in return get stronger items.

Masae was so much nicer to "Good Ol' Four Eyes", as I called him. I kept giving him 'friendly' hammer bonks after every coversation I had with him, kept calling him "Good Ol' Four Eyes", and was 'so shocked' later on my voice thoughts lost all emotion as they said 'oh no, I don't believe it. I didn't see that coming' Also, I'm starting to wonder if Podley shares the same opinion of himself that his detractors have on him given how 'somber' his dialogue feels whenever it's not his 'welcome to my tavern' line

Maitre Delish would be pronounced... well maitre is sorta like metronome, (but sounding a tiny bit more like the word May), De (as in detail) lish (Rhymes with fish), It's a play on Maître d' or the head waiter / "master of house" for a restaurant. You can also youtube a clip on how to pronounce Maître d' if my description isn't helping, some people also pronounce Maître as Mater (like the character from Cars) so that's fun.

It's not an alfredo sauce reference. The "romas" that Flavio was talking about here are roma tomatoes. Roma tomatoes are the type usually used in tomato-based sauces, as they have a lower water content than other types of tomatoes and thus make the sauces nice and thick.
