You should pair the Montenegro with a Bourbon whiskey, if some one wants to try something new with bourbon but a little sweeter than a Manhattan, and Amaro Nonino with Rye whiskey to keep that nice spice flavor and more savory notes in the drink. Both pairings complement each other very well. I get high praises behind the bar with those two. I usually ask first before making.

What if I use rye and Montengero? Amaro Nonino is not available in my country and I wanted to buy rye instead of bourbon so that I can also use it in a sazerac. What do you think about that?

with montenegro, I believe that right ratio is the key. Since the taste of montenegro is more straight forward and a little more of a bittersweet approach’ I changed the whole structure into a less sour drink. My ratio is 40ml bourbon,20ml montenegro,15ml aperal and 10ml lemon juice just for a sour sip at the end

Ok, I know it often calls for a particular Amaro, but really, there are hundrets out there and many of them are way cheaper then Amaro Nonino. I believe this one can be easily made by yourself (other then Chartreuse). You just have to mix a Jägermeister (which is cheap here in germany) 50/50 with an self made Orange Likör and you have an Nonino. Try it out. I could not spot a difference, and for a Cocktail it is a good substitute.

Interestingly, the prices here in the States (at least Virginia) are about the same--around $40 for a 750ml, which is probably laughably high compared to what they must pay in Italy. Montenegro is probably about $5 less, but that's it.

Hey Steve love all of your content. I have learned a lot from watching your videos this past year. Just wanted to go out on a limb and say what needs to be said. Only because although you may have jokingly bastardized Sam Ross’ cocktail, the viewers of this video and comments who don’t already know him, deserve to know a bit about the man behind the Paper Plane. He is not only an Australian bartender from NYC who owns a bar. He started off bartending under Sasha Petraske at Little Branch, The East Side Company and Milk and Honey in NYC. Petraske is glorified for popularizing the “Speakeasy” and second wave craft cocktail culture. Funny though, Petraske was not in it for the praise, he really only wanted to execute classic cocktails and create a comfortable gathering space. He was extremely mindful of the most foundational drink crafting techniques, juicing fresh daily and only using house made syrups. Petraske’s influence is much more far reaching than some realize. He opened up some of the best bars in New York and have fostered some amazing talent. Under his mentorship, Ross and a handful of others have gone on to open their own bars and/or have consulted great bar programs in the United States. Ricardo Boccato opened up Dutch Kills (Long Island NY). Chad Solomon and Christy Pope opened up Midnight Rambler (Dallas Texas). Sam Ross and Mickey Mcllroy opened up Attaboy (NYC and Nashville, TN). Ross has also consulted for bars such as Noble Experiment (San Diego), Comme Ça (LA and Las Vegas), The Dorsey (Las Vegas), Rosina (Las Vegas), Electra Cocktail Lounge (Las Vegas). Keep up the great content Steve!

Thank you, I was also a little taken back by that gloss-over. 😆 Even working with Sasha aside, AB NYC has pretty consistently been a Top 20ish bar worldwide. No less love to Steve though, not everyone wants to geek out on the history and such. He did say a bit more in the description as well.

Ok! I did this with Campari and Averna, the color is totally off but damnit if I don't like it way more than expected! That's it, I'm ordering Nonino to make it right. If it gets even better this might become my new favorite, and I'm normally NOT a fan of Campari or Aperol. Tempted to go with Montenegro since it's half the price of Nonino but ah... Edit: Also, just a pinch of salt seems to work well here. That might just be because I'm not much of a bitterhead and salt tames bitterness a bit. I have to admit that I have an abusive relationship with salt. When I get the Nonino I'll have to try with and without a few drops of saline solution.

Does Fernet Branca works as sub for amaro in this cocktail?
@nicksowards7772
@nicksowards7772 Жыл бұрын
That would be a wildly different drink, fernet branca isn't similar to those amari. It would get you pretty close to a Midnight Stinger though! (also by Sam Ross) It's also bourbon and lemon, with fernet branca and simple syrup. Who knows, you might like a mashup of the two drinks.
@parasharkchari

Where I live, Nonino is really hard to come by, and while I could probably find it online, it is pricier and I live in a state with double sales tax on liquor, so it's hard to justify it. As a result, I've leaned into subs that are more widely available and not so expensive... so for the time being, my favorite sub for Amaro Nonino in this drink remains Jagermeister. I can't say it's a "good sub" from the standpoint of emulating the original, but it's a good sub in that the end product is still a delightful cocktail.

Learning here and confused. “Amaro” is a singular general term for hundreds of Amari? So whether or not the distiller uses amaro on label, if recipe simply says “Amaro” Isnt that as generic as saying “whiskey” or “wine”......idk, maybe too many varieties w/Amari from florals to barks to herbals to citrus, etc etc
@morrillkevin
@morrillkevin 3 жыл бұрын
Amaro is a very broadly category made all kinds of ways. It’s a much broader spectrum than say different whiskeys or tequilas. So Nonino and Montenegro are great but something like Averna (also an amaro) will taste awful in this drink.

Great video! But the pronunciation shoukd be similar to "no Knee no". Italian doesn't change "n" to a "y" sound, unless a "g" comes before it, as in "gnocchi" (pronounced like "nyo key"). You were pronouncing it as if it were Spanish, and spelled Noniño. I'm only offering this to be helpful, not insulting! Again, great video and thanks for the details on the flavor profiles.

I’ve made this numerous times and I still completely don’t understand the amount of fresh lemon juice. The lemon juice overpowers everything. I’ve learned to use less lemon juice if using fresh squeezed lemons. Maybe that’s just personal preference but I still can’t justify anyone liking this as much as Normand and Morril.

Hi amlite. Amaro Nonino is a recipe from my great-grandfather. It was created in 1933 and the original name was Amaro di Carnia. The recipe is an infusion of herbs from the montain of our region (friuli-venezia giulia), lemon lime and orange from the south of italy and spices from all over the world. It is a really unique product that has grape distilalte aged in barrique to make even more elegant. I am sure that if you willg ive it another try you will fall in love with it! if you have any question please contact me!

Grappa Nonino UNIMPRESSIVE! You're incapable of being objective. Sugar syrup for inexperienced bartenders. Weak, distant undefined taste profile completely drowned out in sugar. No character just sugar. Everybody had a grandfather that alone does not make it special. Impress with a product not with a story. You fail to deliver in every respect.

amlite you have the right to have your opinion about a product, but not the right to be rude. In any case Amaro Nonino is a all natural vegan friendly amaro, made with an ancient family recipe and that’s a part of its story that explains also its taste profile. Notes of cinnamon, exotic fruits citrus with a chocolate after taste.. Lot of people love our Amaro and we are happy and proud to be able to talk about it! Have a nice day!

Francesca Bardelli Nonino Italians misjudging an honest Yank opinion based on real life experience is nothing new. There's no rudeness just honesty. Your recipe is Wrong. Try any amari product from Erboristeria Cappelletti as an example. They do not provide distant hints or impressions of flavours drowned out in sugar instead they deliver the flavour forward in full strength with no silly excuses or sugar deception. The herbals are distinct and vibrant as if freshly squeezed not hidden behind cheap yet unpenetrable wall of sugar syrup. Maybe you could learn something...
