What a great rapid-fire how-to on course management. This is fantastic. If any golfer watches one KZbin today, this should be it. My biggest faux pas is picking the wrong club to get out of jail with. Pitching with a 6 is way better than my "quarter-swing 3W" shenanigans that shoot me in the foot as I rocket it to the other side of the fairway. ugh. Thanks for this!

that... does't make sense. In the first example we could try to hit the area between the bunkers. That's not any better.
@warrenrohloff8095
@warrenrohloff8095 5 жыл бұрын
@@dustinp26 I believe the point he is trying to make is that your subconscious doesn't understand "not". If you visualize the ball going into the bunker and you tell yourself "don't do that", your brain only recognizes the ball going into the bunker and that's the shot you hit. Visualize exactly what you want to happen so your subconscious mimics that behavior.

@@warrenrohloff8095 I understand that... but if I visualize my ball splitting those bunkers perfectly, it's still an incredibly difficult shot to pull off which is most likely going to result in my ball ending up in a bunker.

There is a par 5 on my regular course that has been my nemesis for ages. Yesterday I decided to tee off with my 3 wood instead of my driver. Straight down the middle of a narrow fairway with danger on both side. Used my 5 hybrid to lay up. Pitched on with my sand wedge nearly holing out. Left myself with a 20 foot putt. Pared the hole for the first time ever. These tips really do work. Just gain faith in your swing and you will have more fun on the course. Thanks for the great information gentlemen.

if you haven't seen, mark crossfield made an interesting point regarding mistake number four in one of his recent videos. more often than not even if you fail hitting your desired shot, you'll still end up with a shorter approach in than if you chipped out. so in many cases going for it is the best option because win or lose, you'll end up better off than if you had chipped out.

I found success with a similar mindset last year. I know I was comfortable and confident with approach shots between 100-150 yards, so I started approaching tee shots by figuring out which was the easiest shot/club I could hit to give me ~130-150 into the green. I didn’t significantly one improve any one physical skill, but I still went from shooting lots of 80-81’s, and just missing the 70’s, to routinely shooting 75-78.

I've started laying up no closer than 100 yards as that's a confident easy full 52 for me. Shorter than that and it's half swing wedges and it all gets messy. I've definitely started bumping out if trouble instead of hero shots. The hybrid rescue is an ideal club to choke down on and putter stroke it back onto and down the fairway keeping it low.

When the ball is below or above your feet, the amount of left/right adjustment depends on the loft of the club - more loft, more adjustment. For a 3-wood, you don't need to change your aim much at all, but for a wedge, you need a lot of "borrow".

Hey I keep slicing most of my clubs (I’m right hand) even though I usually have alright contact, a closed/squared face, and I feel as though I have a strong grip. When I swing I try to feel as though my right elbow is tucked into my side, and I’m almost pushing my right hand through the ball, so I can get a better swing path. Any suggestions for me? Something I can work on at the driving range? Anything you could give me would be amazing. Btw love your videos 👍🏼

I feel like all this comes with experience. Management is simply playing the game long enough and being smart enough to pay attention. Of course, some people never learn this, but if you want to break 90, 80, and even par this can't go without notice. Great video. Course management is too important, and I think if people were to think their way around rather than just knocking it around, they will improve.
@honuputters1891
@honuputters1891 5 жыл бұрын
Experience is definitely a big factor. You need to know and trust your distances, and you need to have a good idea of your trajectories with different clubs at different swing amounts (the harder you hit a given club, the higher the launch). I see a lot of novices hit up into tree branches because they don't think about trajectory, and even if they did they don't really know what different clubs do. Another common beginner problem is to always aim directly at the green, even if there is trouble on that line, and they can't get to the green in one anyway, and there is a wide open area on a different line. All this isn't surprising though, because humans can only think about one thing at a time. Beginners are so focused on just trying to hit the ball that they don't have brain slots left for tactics. Once you have a repertoire of shots you can more or less trust, that frees you up to evaluate the situation. Most people could benefit from spending some practice time carefully observing their shot trajectory.
@wx811
@wx811 5 жыл бұрын
@@honuputters1891 Absolutely. I think your point on predictable flight pattern and predictable contact makes sense, as if you hit it everywhere, fat irons and in general play above 14 handicap (general rule of thumb) management really doesn't matter because you don't hit the ball well enough for it to matter. But once you're relatively good at basic stuff, like making contact, have decent enough accuracy the ball isn't going OB on every drive, and a somewhat predictable pattern of flight, management comes into play. But you're right, skill level improves, management improves with it. It's a process this game, we gotta take it slow.

Good video lads. I always wanted to know why a flyer lie was considered a flyer lie.
@aname4437
@aname4437 5 жыл бұрын
An important reason for not aiming down the middle of the fairway is to take penalty hazards out of play (or reduce the likelihood you hit into them). The difference between being in the rough and fairway is often negligible, but the difference between being in the rough (or even sand) vs out of bounds is huge. There are a couple holes I play where I'm aiming on a line that will have the ball finish in the rough. Basically, don't be afraid of the rough unless you know its super thick (and it almost never is for member/public play).

I know guys who hit driver on every hole they can. Here's a tip that saves me several strokes per round. I divide the total yardage to the pin by 2 and tee off with a club that will takes me better than half way with no trouble. (Example: If the hole is 370 yards... divide 370 by 2 and get 185. Let's say fairway bunker trouble is about 225, so I hit a 5 wood off the tee to keep me as long as possible with no chance of trouble) That would leave me about a 5 iron to the center of the green. I aim for the center of the green and look to make one or two putts thereafter. Ever since I took on this strategy, I make many more pars and just about the same amount of birdies.

the slope between me and the ball is something I really have to be aware of, around here are mountain courses where I rarely have a flat hit area - I know about aiming for slopes but thought only severe slopes would matter, apparently even a slightly slope will bend the ball flight, we will see.

Any time I play a new course, I take a look at a satellite image of each hole (bluegolf.com is an excellent resource), note the distances to any hazards, and make a club selection weighing the length of the hole, hazards, width of fairway, etc. Then I write these selections in word doc, print it, and bring it with me to the course. Obviously the weather conditions affect the selections, but I have a reference, rather than standing on the tee blind. In my time of doing this, I've seen very few (if any) reachable par 4s that are worth attacking. It's almost always better to play a more consistent club to wedge distance.

I have a very low budget, I have only lob wedge, and PW to 4 iron. I need more clubs but looking for what to buy next, what club will improve my game the most. Driver, 3 wood, some hybrid, or more wedges as I struggle from 150 and in.
@xxarea83xx
@xxarea83xx 5 жыл бұрын
No pro here, but my opinion.... if your struggle is within 150, start with 1 more wedge to close the distance gap between your lob and pitch, then practice all of those shots. After that, if you’re good with your 4i for distance and accuracy, your next club probably should be a 3 wood for the extra distance off the tee plus extra distance off the deck on long par 5’s. Then once you’ve got that down, decide if you want extra tee shot distance (driver) or if you want to close the distance gap between your 3 wood and 4i (5 wood or 3 hybrid or 3i, whichever of those work best for you) Again, just my opinion, but that would be my method for club selection

This is a great video. Way too many hero shots in my rounds for sure! Just lacking the hero to execute them!

How can I tell the differences in my fairways, hard and soft, on my first tee? What are some tips for getting to know a course before one even plays it.

Hey guys, I'm a 12 and I probably make mistake #2 several times every round. I don't often hit a big slice or a big hook, but I do often hit a fade or a slight draw. Problem is I can't be consistent with either. So I aim down the middle figuring that whichever one shows up won't hurt me. Do you have a better approach I could take?

When Piers makes jokes I literally laugh out loud at home. Andy doesn't even flinch, I'm pretty sure he's a reptilian alien from another galaxy.

Pierce appears to have a sway back (an S curve in his thoracic spine at address). Is this intentional? As a golfer who started as a weight lifter, I know my coach had to work on actually getting me to feel more rounded because my spine posture was "too perfect" kind of like what I am noticing with Pierce when he sets up to the ball (like he's about to do a deadlift or a bent over row). Great video about planning your misses very nice

Any tips on yanking the driver and irons to the left? I typically hit a draw, but I have a tendency to yank balls that start out left off the club face.
@honuputters1891

One common cause of yanking left is getting the weight too much onto the left left during the downswing and then your whole body spins around that leg. With a conventional golf swing you need to get onto the left side to some extent, but if you want to hit it straight you must moderate that and you must keep your shoulders relatively square through impact. It can be tricky to "clear the lower body" while keeping the upper body "behind the ball". There are unconventional swing styles that don't suffer from this particular difficulty. One thing that can help, even with the conventional "clear the hips" swing, is to think about swinging to the ball - not past the ball - and then let the momentum of the club do the follow through. If you consciously try to power into the follow through, a spin-out is very likely. Kinematic studies show that the best golfers "give it all to the ball" - the energy input happens prior to impact and drops to near zero just before impact. At impact the club is nearly "free wheeling" at the maximum velocity. Think about a drag race - any fuel left that you have left after the finish line is wasted. Use your power to accelerate the club until just before impact and then coast into the follow through, letting all that momentum carry you to a nice finish.

Your comments about the 10th hole could be used as well on the first hole. Iron - 180(no danger) 240 left to hole, hit another 160-180 club and you are left with a 60-80 yard shot to green. I am a high handicapper and my goal this year is to play bogey golf. This is what I would do!!! Be a PLAYA!!!

The only thing I would mention is that less than skilled players need to consider what would happen to their shot if the expected shot shape did not occur. That is, if I want it to fade and it goes straight, will it put me into trouble? In that case you might aim a little more right so a straight shot stays in play ( assuming rh player)

Question for you guys. I have trouble hitting my regular irons, but try hitting blades and found out that my apex is higher and a straight ball flight. Why is this ?
