The reason this was so scary compared to the sequels was described best by Roger Ebert, who loved this film: it's not how calm or extreme the events each night are, it's that the movie is made in a way where it makes it feel like real footage from our world, and something as simple as a door moving on it's own would terrify you in your house alone at night. The sequels made it clear that they were "movies" and went for jumpscares and spectacle, and it then feels like we are watching a scripted thing, which ruins that atmosphere.

Asia's rules for safety 1. Shut the door. 2. Tuck your toes. 🥰 Pretty incredible that the budget for this film was around $15,000 and during the same year another horror, 1408 with Samuel L Jackson and John Cusack had a budget around $25 million. Both are great horrors, but it really goes to show that sometimes, less is more and what's left to our imagination is always more terrifying than anything they show us on the screen. A great achievement for a film to be so good on such a minimal budget. When I saw this on the big screen, I spent most of the time looking at the clock in the corner cos as the tension ramped up ... my nerves just couldn't take it.😝

This and the Blair Witch Project began the 'Found Footage' movie genre. When it first came out the producer etc., had already sequestered the actors and crew; and they had to sign A Non Disclosure' contract. They were hidden, and seen nowhere; and were forbidden to do interviews. That, and the lack of ending credits, had sooo many people thinking it MUST be real! Me included, lol. It was the talk of the country for moviegoers. The buzz and hype was amazing! The film itself was done for peanuts financially, yet made Blockbuster movie-type millions. I need to actually watch the theatrical version one day. I've only seen the screener version with the original ending. its very different then here. in the original ending, she "stomps" back up stairs like here, but instead of throwing his body at the camera, she just walks in by herself, covered in blood, a knife in her hand and sits next to the bed. then it proceeds to fast-forward through the day, and the entire time she is just sitting next to the bed, rocking. it stops FFing a couple times like when the phone rings, etc, then resumes. later that evening you hear her friend come in. she's calling out to katie, then she screams and you hear her run out the door. a little later the cops show up. you hear them down stairs, calling out to anyone, then they come up the stairs. they see katie and train their flashlights one her. this is when she seems to snap out of it. she stands up, all confused, asking what happened, where Micah was. and she starts walking toward them, knife still in her hand. they start yelling at her to drops the knife, but she's obviously confused. then, the ghost slams one of the doors down the hall and this spooks the cops enough they start shooting katie. it ends with them looking around the upstairs of the house and reporting in.

a lot of people don't do their research and automatically assume pentagrams are evil cause of movies ect. when in reality they are there to word off evil, to keep the demons or evil spirits AWAY! the circle around the pentagram represents protection and ever changing, ever lasting circle of life and nature. the 5 points in the star represent the 5 elements, air, fire, water, earth , and spirit. so the next time you see a pentagram just know you're at peace and you are safe in that area.

I love the ending of this movie, but it's not the one I originally saw. The ending as _I_ saw it, Katie is downstairs, you hear the screams, Micah goes down and there's more screams. Then Katie comes up, knife in hand, blood all over her, and stands at the bed, rocking back and forth until morning. Then someone knocks on the door, comes in, you can hear her calling for Katie, and Katie stops rocking. The visitor screams, there's a growl and roar from the monster, gurgling, silence. Katie returns to rocking. A bit later, police show up, they find Katie. She's snaps out of it, asks what's going on, and the police repeatedly tell her to put the knife down. She's upset, doesn't know what's happening, and approaches the police, who shoot her as she's demanding to know where Micah is. I think there's a third ending, too, but I'm not sure. I'm only aware of these two, and they're both awesome!

Great reaction guys. Found footage is one of my fav horror genres. Blair Witch started me down that rabbit hole. 40:30 BJ: “ … And then the Ouija board started moving… I’m not gone even say that word no more; the bird- the board started moving!” 😂 Wise man, wise words.

Almost spit my coffee out when Asia said, "That's why you gotta tuck your feet!" Spot ON Asia! All girls know this! LOL!😂

Asia peaking behind her hands while laughing at how scared she was. And then BJ telling her she has to look. Lol Such a fun reaction.

The star on the board was a Pentagram. It is used in paranormal rituals.

Had activity in my home, it's as scary as **** Footsteps on the stairs, kitchen drawers all opening and shutting, and the handle to my bedroom being pushed down. I would never provoke whatever it was. Great reaction xx

Asia reacted EXACTLY like I thought she would and it was so much fun to watch. LOL

This movie scared the crap out of me and my dad. Growing up on the Rez, spirits are something we're taught never to aggravate and respect and never mess with. I'm never going to forget watching this on tv, my dad sat down and started watching. He just happened to sit down during the scene where Katie was dragged outta the bed, he just sat up and said "Nope, not watching this" and walked away. What makes this so damn good compared to the others that came after, is they did a great job of making it feel so believable and eerie. To add to all of this, the suspense of escalation as the nights go on is creepy. Than, when it starts doing things during the day, when they thought they probably felt safe, it felt like it was a matter of time. The icing on the cake is the way Katie screams, it's absolutely blood curdling and bone chilling.

This was amazing!! 😂😂😂 I really hope you check out the sequels too. At least the second and third!! The Marked Ones (5th) is my personal favourite but the first 3 are very much about Katie and her family and answer so many unanswered questions!

Yes, I would agree. I hope they watch the first six. The twists and turns in this series are pretty insane, like the endings of both 5 and 6.

One thing I really like about this one is that it starts in the middle of the activity. So many ghost stories follow the plot line of something happening to start the haunting (like moving to a new house), but this one jumps right in.

Also, this is what's known as the "found footage" genre. You should also watch "Blair Witch Project" if you haven't already. It came out in '99. But the Paranormal Activity movies are all pretty good. The third one is the best!

This and Blair witch are The undisputed Kings of low budget found footage horror, these are BOTH film that understand how horror and fear work. The more you show the scary thing, the less scary it becomes, less money improves movies like this, massively. The absolute scariest thing we can perceive is the thing that we can't QUITE see, so our mind tries to fill in the gaps of information fueled by fear and intimidation It's worth noting that this film doesn't work without high quality sound or headphones, the droning rumble is so fucking effective it's unbelievable, perfect horror for me, 10/10 Also when I saw this in theaters when it was new,I couldn't go to bed without the sun coming up, so while I was staying up watching TV and gaming, my goddamn cat knocked some shit off my kitchen counter, which he never did before or since, really makes my memory of this movie so much more powerful, so I hated my cat at the time but man it really helped solidify what I loved about this shit

I agree 💯! The less you see, the scarier it is. Steven Spielberg sat down at home with a copy of the dvd we had sent to all the studios when trying to sell the film. He watched the whole movie and afterwards he couldn’t open his bedroom door! It had mysteriously locked all on its own. He had to get a locksmith to open the door. He truly believed that the dvd was haunted! 😂 He ended up returning the disc in a trash bag. I call us even. I haven’t been in the ocean since I first watched Jaws.

@7:29 The easiest way a "ghost" can interact with is with electric light, as they can cause an "interruption" to the power source causing the light to "blink." However, the easiest light for them to "see" in is natural light such as a candle. However, they can interact with other things on our side such as the keys.

This movie is extra spooky because it violates the Blankie Rule. If I am in my bed and under the covers, the demon/monster/bad guy is not allowed to get me. THAT'S THE RULES! This movie BROKE the RULES!!

What I liked about these movies is they're not gross, they're scary and suspenseful. When that low pitched rumbly sound starts, you know something is about to go down, so you pay more attention, goosebumps start running up and down your arms, your heart starts racing, the hair on the back of your neck raises your spine tingles your hands start sweating and BAM!

Just for perspective, the budget for this movie was about $15,000. The box office totaled about $195 million. BJ you're not alone when you say that you forgot (that it was a movie). The immersion of this movie back when it 1st released was insane.
Loved your reactions. You HAVE to watch parts 2 & 3. The others are ok too but those two are must-see

Those big, beautiful eyes peeking through her fingers is a branding opportunity you guys are missing out on! Obviously you guys need to watch #2 - and #3 to be honest. They form kind of a trilogy. There's more after that but the first three are a MUST.
