Yeah my parents are constantly playing the college “game” with me (I only just finished freshman year of high school). I do agree that I should work hard now, and im thankful to be as privileged as I am, and to have parents who give a shit and want me to be successful. However, even when I meet their quotas, they expect more. Literally yesterday my mom saw that I had free time at 10, an hour before I would go to sleep, and dragged me out to have a discussion with her and my dad about doing more work. I just recently thought about it in the fucking 30 minutes of free time I have walking my dog that this kind of shit isn’t helpful. I realized that instead of building up my own work ethic, and wanting to do things myself, I’ve started to try and cheat my work. Now that just doesn’t help the both of us. I think the reason they overload me is because they want me to be even more successful than they were, which is good, you should want the best for your child. But they try to achieve it through brute force instead of letting myself discover success, and actually doing something on my own for once.

I see why people are so afraid to go against their parents... It all comes to the house... Say you don't decide to go to college, what is the worst thing that might happen?? Parents kick you out of the house.... But you don't have any house to fall back on... So they use this chance to blackmail you because they know you are nothing without their support... I say people like us 20-25 we all should try hard to get our house even if it's very small... Once we do that there's nothing that will come between our dreams... Nobody can give you shit if you own everything in your life...

To own a house you need money and a LOT of money. And to earn that much money you need a high profile job and for a high profile job you gotta graduate from an A grade college. Indirectly you're doing what your parents wanted you to do

Not necessarily... You can hustle... Get experience doing small jobs first... Develop a skill and work for free for a while for someone to gain experience... Then compete for freelancing jobs... Or gain enough friends to start a business... Or make a product and sell it to the big businesses...or buy stuff in bulk and sell it Amazon... There are tons of opportunities today to make a living without college....

"Why would any parent want their kid unhappy in life?" The answer to that is collectivist family culture. The idea that a person only exists to appease their parents and grandparents by becoming their retirement plan, since being brought into existence against one's will is considered a "gift" and the person MUST repay that debt by sacrificing their right to pursue individual desires and interests for the sake of providing for the family, because that's considered their only purpose in life. Going against these ideals is considered "selfish" "arrogant" and "ungrateful." Selfish because "We didn't get to do whatever we wanted when we were your age, so neither should you." Arrogant because "You think you're so special that you think you shouldn't be forced to follow our traditions." Ungrateful because "We took care of you, so you owe it to us to sacrifice your autonomy for our sake." This attitude is commonly prevalent amongst communities and families who are poverty stricken or have been molded by religious doctrine or a combination of the two.

Some parents are very dominating. They love controlling their children as much as possible. I know a guy who at the age of 26, being a graduate, wasn't allowed to apply for a job because his parents wanted him to finish his IELTS exam first. The truth was actually they have this mentality of being angry when they see him being too advanced according to their views. It's like not allowing your child to touch a phone. Also, they didn't even allow him to wear a suit at wedding ceremonies till he was 23 years old, as if he was wearing an inappropriate dress.

Ages 18-25 is a difficult point of life to be in. Oftentimes, couples worry more about their reputations than what is actually the best interest of their son/daughter. It's the time where the young adult needs to break away from childhood and take responsibility, and the parents need to step down from their role as authority figures. --Those life transitions are hard.

I felt this one too, I don’t want to go to college, I want to become a professional racecar driver, but I feel like my father doesn’t want me to do it, but that’s also the thing, he doesn’t want me giving my shot at it because that was HIS dream when he was my age, and he never got the chance too, and now that I have a chance to, I can understand why he would be jealous, but this is my dream, I’ve wanted this shit since I was 6 years old and I’m 20 now. However, also, if I succeed, I also know he will be proud of me down the road, and that’s one of the things I’ve always strived for, is to make my father proud of me, because I feel like I struggle to connect with my father, and even my mother sometimes too, on a personal level.

Okay so I’ve just been crying for the past ten minutes because I have an admissions exam for a uni course that i don’t want to do in 4 days. My mum has been telling me to do medicine ever since I was a little child and since I was young I thought nothing of it and agreed. But now I’m going into year 13/final year of high school, about to do my UCAT exam which i’ve been struggling to do well on in mocks and i don’t even want to be doing this right now. I love my mum and she has always been there for me when I needed her but this one thing is really causing some conflict between us because every time I try to bring up the fact that I may not be interested she gets mad. Sometimes I try to say it in a half-joking, light-hearted manner but she just says, what else would you do instead. Now you see, because my mother always told me to do medicine I followed her words, no questions asked, until it was too late. So I never really thought about what I really wanted to do. When I tried to say that I didn’t really want to medicine before going to year 12 and when choosing my A-Level subjects she kept asking what else am I gonna do, and I had no answer. So I ended up giving in and just choosing bio, chem, maths even if these weren’t the subjects i wanted to do. Now I’m kind of leaning towards neuroscience which I have decided to put as my backup choice for my 5th university option and she’s accepted that. But I really don’t want to take this exam or do medicine. And to make matters worse, I get really emotional when I get into arguments so I can never get my point across in a strong, successful way because I always end up crying or on the brink of tears so I just have to walk out. I really don’t know what to do and I’m honestly really tired. I’ve tried to look for advice online but they always say the same thing: to have a calm conversation with her and allow her to try and understand. But she’s too stubborn and since my exam is so close by and I’ve already done so much to prepare for this course, it’s going to be even harder to convince her. I just wish I could have someone by my side who could help me convince her. I feel really pathetic right now, but standing up against her is definitely much easier said than done, especially in this matter.

Now I realize that my parents want me to go college cause they want the best for me. I appreciate that and tell them everything is okey they don’t need to worry about me. I love them and we shouldn’t talk about college in order to keep good relationships. I am not sure it works good but they’ve stopped annoying me so much. Parents words are seen as the gospel by most children, because they’re your parents. But it’s ok to accept the fact that your mom and dad are full of it sometimes, and don’t know what they are talking about. Just because they’re your parents doesn’t mean they know what they’re talking about.

My parents want me to live with or near them in the village, the only place where I want get away from because I have nothing left to do there, and my dreams lie somewhere else. I have given them many signals of how I want to live my own life and be somewhere else, I couldn't really tell them straightforwadly about this because I was afraid it would hurt their feelings, but they kept bringing this whole "coming back to the village" idea in every single conversation. One day, my parents had an idea to build me a house in the village. I tried to reject the idea, but at that point they already had set their mind, and I could only agree to it unwillingly. The only argument I could make was a request about not going overboard with the houss, keep everything as cheap as possible. Recently, my parents called me and asked if I had some savings, and they asked me in a roundabout way to maybe spare some for the house, so it was clear at that point that they never even listened to my only request about not going overboard. I would want to pay for my entire house, my own house, without asking them or anyone to pay for it. I never asked for my parents, NOT EVEN ONCE about building a house for me. I never asked them anything that I know I should do on my own. But here I am now, dealing with this uncertain dilemma. What they do doesn't really feel like something out of favor for me, it feels like a grand scheme of keeping me in one place forever. I was also rrally stupid. Had I told them to maybe spare the money for something else instead, such as education, maybe I could have avoided this predicament now. I don't know what to do. I feel like I have never had control over my life. My parents have a tendency to decide things for their children the way they see fit, even though some of those decisions have proven to be quite disastrous. My sister for example, had an eye condition. My parents learned about this eye operation that was super new and my sister could be the first ever patient in my country to receive such operation. Sounds great, but at that point, the risk was also unpredictable since there was no prior statistical success rate to be observed. After having such operation, for some reasons my sister's eye condition got worse over the years and I suspected this also had an effevt on her mental stability. I was really young at that time so I didn't even know what to do, I couldn't give my insights. Had I been smarter back then, I should have asked my oarents to reconsider everything. Now my sister is idle, she can't function on her own. I knkw that in the future I would be the one taking care of her, but in my big family, no one else has this kind of issue. My cousins for example, they had lived their onw lives without worrying about taking care of their siblings or anyone else in their family, let alone someone with physical and mental condition. It sounds cruel, the fact that I sound reluctant to take my sister under my care, but it is not because I don't want to help, it's because this whole situation could have been averted years ago if not for some of my parents' decision that I believe was idiotic. Now it is the point of no return for me, but of course, there is no way I could say that right in front of their faces, coz it seems like no matter what I do, they always believe that I'm the one who doesn't know shit.

That’s just a harsh reality of life. If you accept your parent’s support as an adult you have to do what they say. It’s the same when you get a job. If you want to keep earning money, you have to do what your boss says. Maybe your parents are being annoying because they want you the hell out of their house. If they keep coddling you, you’ll never leave.
