I have to mention that before doing ANY derailleur alignment, you should ALWAYS CHECK YOUR AXLE, HUB, driver/freewhub and Cassette for torque, alignment and function. Many customers over the years w shifting issues caused by a misaligned qr axle, bad hub, bent teeth/chain.

If it’s an existing mech & cassette…. Check chain length and Hanger alignment for sure. I spent a lot of time trying to correct a setup that either couldn’t change correctly in high gears, or if adjusted, low gears….. Great content as always, from the makers of the finest tools to fettle your bike.
@simplyxuan7792 жыл бұрын
The problem was that the owner added a direct mount D-Link to the hanger, then attaching the derailleur to the D-Link caused the derailleur's chainline to be moved out by the thickness of the D-Link. Which is why the limit screws were totally wound out, as the derailleur can hardly reach the largest cog with the increment in chainline. Another component you can consider if you want to use a larger cassette than recommended, is a derailleur hanger extension. It's an add-on to the derailleur hanger, and does not replace the original D-Link of the derailleur, while keeping the chainline similar.

As a newbie to working on bikes this is great info. I wanted to add a larger cassette on a bike I just bought for my wife but I have no idea where to find the info on how big of a final cog I can use on a Deore XT drivetrain. I just have no idea what to search for but maybe all I need is a hanger extension.

Calvin, every new bike I’ve ever bought had the derailleur hanger out of alignment enough to need correction. Also, the last bike I bought, a Cannondale Topstone 105SE (first edition), had a chain one link too long. To compensate, they had the D screw run almost all the way in to compensate, and the upper jockey wheel was way too far down and back from the cassette. There’s even a few pictures on the net of it although they must of corrected it during the model run because not all were that way.
@wilfdarr2 жыл бұрын
So true! My current bike was my first bike not from an LBS, instead it came in a box. I was sure that if my LBS couldn't get it right what were the odds that, even if they had set it up properly before shipping, that it would survive in said condition: I was absolutely shocked that this would be my first bike ever where the limits were set correctly, alignment was good, only my rear brake was rubbing ever so slightly.

Can i use a 10 speed rd to a 9 speed sprocket 42t? With a link?
@newttella10432 жыл бұрын
Depends.... the issue is if your shifter's throw ratio can shift through the 9 cogs fine. It's a crap shoot on which brand and model will be compatible with your particular 10sp derailleur. My suggestion is to just try it. Your derailleur actually could care less how many speeds you are running, it's the shifter that decides how many clicks and how far to pull the cable (pull ratio). As for adding a link, if the derailleur's B screw isn't maxxed in and you've added enough chain links then you're fine, if not, than you need an extender or dlink.
@newttella10432 жыл бұрын
...actually it's okay if the B screw is maxxed in. As long as you're jockey wheel is clearing the biggest cog (your new 42t). If the maxxed in B screw can't allow the jockey wheel to clear the 42t cog, for sure you need an extender or dlink.

There are derailleur hanger extenders OR, as in this video, an after market dlink that is meant to replace the original dlink. I'm guessing the owner of the bike didn't realized he had the latter. @GNX1572 жыл бұрын
The problem is they were using the wolfs tooth to make the derailleur work with that large cassette, when most likely the derailleur is not rated for that much difference in tooth range. So the chains looks too short but in this case will have to be okay but in a properly designed native system with the matching cassette and derailleur, this would look like a too short chain scenario.
