Using sacrifices as a way to connect with God seems alien. How are we supposed to connect with the myriad of details associated with animal sacrifice in the modern day? Join Rabbi Fohrman as he explores this fundamental question by reexamining the three categories of sacrifice, and discover how the ancient tradition creates a modern framework for how to connect with God.

Ha’Shem means “The Name”, “The Name” is YaH, as in HalleluYAH “Praise ye YaH” Here is the Original Semitic Text. Also, vav means more than just nail. Vav is a hook, or even a walking stick. If you’re interested in the gematria, there are plenty of interesting resources.

Yirmayahu 7:21-23 suggests that burnt sin offerings were not mandatory! Which verses in Vayikra actually mandate the burnt offerings for involuntary sin? 21. So says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel; Add your burnt offerings upon your sacrifices and eat flesh. 22. For neither did I speak with your forefathers nor did I command them on the day I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning a burnt offering or a sacrifice. 23. But this thing did I command them, saying: Obey Me so that I am your God and you are My people, and you walk in all the ways that I command you, so that it may be well with you. We can also consider that there are multiple places throughout the Tanach which suggest that burnt offerings for sin atonement should be ceased in favor of prayer, repentance, and charity.

Kind of? He didn’t command them about the laws of offerings when they left Egypt. That is true. He commanded them later, in the wilderness of Sinai.

I don't understand why this sacrificial system was even considered to be practiced by the ancient Jews. God reveals himself as a tyrant and demands that the people make a never ending litany of sacrifices to him. I would have said no.

The Noachide laws don't require the sacrifices discussed here. Further, if you listen to the descriptions of the three levels of sacrifice, the speaker's contention is that they are all about mind, heart and soul. Respect, love and awe are all products of mind, heart and soul. If you are sincerely trying to understand sacrifices, the video on Parshat Tzav (the Torah portion following this one) might be more helpful to you. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHy1gqaJjs-Bf8U
