Thanks man. I have a road bike with a tourney group set and you just made me feel good about my bike. I would upgrade to a sora or tiagra if I had the money but I'm currently satisfied because of this video. Thumbs up!

Ray Támara exactly, mine has 8200km in last 13 months, although it was ridden only on nice weather, never in rain or snow (maybe few times in light rain but nothing special)...

I have just come back to cycle touring from a 35 year hiatus, and found STI shifting very addictive, unless I go to trekking bars and maybe a Rohloff down the track, I will be quiet happy to stay with the Claris Groupset on my Malvern Star bicycle. GOOD REVIEW.

My Tourney TX came with a Suntour 28/38/48 for commuter/MTB but the disc version had a smaller chainset up front. Even spending a couple months in the rain (not allowed bikes inside) and spending a few years in a garage, and finally a re-assemble, new cables (original was kinked even what I bought it) it shifted very well. The only issue being the cable ferrule I used allowed the gear cable to slip out and my gearing was out twice in a week. Looked it over, found nothing obvious, looked at the cables and there it was. New bit of sheath cut, re-capped and re-used the cable. Not bad for a 2013 bike on factory pads, grease (I know) and tyres/tubes (If tubeless, I'd take care of the cracks)

I got a bargain on Ebay- a Carrera TDF ridden once plus a new pump, Shimano RO76 shoes and SPD pedals(lucky fitted too!), RaceBlade mudguards all for £135.. The bike has Tourney STI shifters and mechs, and cassette- but the chainset was not the AO70... being a 50/34 by 14/28t 7 speed freewheel (14/16/18/20/22/24/28)and living in the Scottish Highlands I've swapped the chainset for a Shimano TY501 which is 46/30...Massive improvement lowering the gears! the original BB was 119mm and this TY501 should run on a 123mm but I've got it set up and all works great! This is my go to training bike and I've tensioned all the spokes and the wheels are heavy but bombproof... I think with the steel fork if I put on 28mm Marathon Plus tyres(reckon maybe even a 32mm front??) this would make a good budget gravel/light touring bike? Tourney is bottom of the Shimano range but it's pretty bombproof, and chains are cheap...!

Thanks for this overview, I have ordered a set of Tourney shifters and derailleurs to upgrade an old Trek 370 Sport road bike to get rid of the down tube shifters, my old knees don't like being deflected when I get into a grade and hang on the shift lever while locked into the bike with my SPD pedals. I think my rides will be way more comfortable having the brifters to use. I like the fact that you give a fair view to the lower price point group sets, too many upper tier gear snobs out there who turn their noses up to anything they deem beneath them. Keep on keepin on man!

Tourney is not bad at all. Is it old? Yes, but is just good enough to get you from A to B. Now, if you wanna have better workouts, 7 speed lacks indeed in performance. BUT IS NOT BAD! Also, Claris has integrated cranksets now!
@bradcomis10668 жыл бұрын
Octalink cranks still need a crank puller. I wouldn't say they are necessarily easier to pull than square taper. If you have a few extra dollars get the Sora parts, much easier to work on and much lighter. Claris shifters and such are basically the same as Sora.

I've ridden both sets aton. the tourney thumb button is placed very well for riding on the hoods but is near impossible to reach from the drops unless you are grabbing the deepest part of the curve.

I really wanted to make Tourney bike, but the Shimano Tourney ST-A070 Leavers ... Why for god sake is the cable sticking out from the inner side and not back the way the breaking cable is going .... and how on earth will you access the inner tumb button if you are in the drops? Can you make the shifters cables hide under the bartape and can you actually use that thumb stick in the drops? I think not but maybe there is a way?
@edwardkerrigan5356 Жыл бұрын
You use the button on the tops - Sora was like that in the earlier versions.

Industry secret, some entry-level women's bikes come with a triple crankset all you have to do I get the right seat for your seat :) you get a bike with a more aerodynamic handlebar position that will make you faster. Women's bikes = faster

Hello. Very good video. Thanks for posting. I have a full claris groupset but I am not happy with gear cables coming out of the side of the gear levers. Could I just get 105 5800 gear levers and a rear cassette with same number of gears and make it work?
@bradcomis10668 жыл бұрын
You will have do a search see if the cable pull ratio of the 105 and Claris rear derailleurs are the same then it should work (use 105 cassette). But seriously side exit shifting cable are excellent! The have less friction than under bar tape shifters and therefore are easier to setup/maintain.

Awesome comparison, Most of the other bike channels completely ignore anything below 105. I have Shimano 2303 8 speed set. It works just like the Tourney, looks like the Claris, on an old 7 speed Schwinn CrossPoint - gravel bike/drop bar conversion. chromoly steel, cantilever brakes, the bike weighs 26lb with 700x38c tires. Lots of fun for a 24 year old bike. flic.kr/s/aHskFAerg5

Around $200 on Amazon, if you buy the components separately. I have it and it works great. The crankset(compact) is a little bit heavy, but it all works great.

I have a Windsor Wellington 2.0 with Tourney 7speed shifters. Derailleur's and i keep up with my buddy on a all carbon frame/fork Ultegra group set. The bike/components will only give you so many "free" watts. The rest is all the rider. The industry is making lots of money off of those "just need the best/lightest everything" riders. Smh
