Budget road groupsets can be great for your first bike, but not really Tourney...

Funny thing, but there is an earlier video by this guy on the subject of Tourney and Claris, where he says that even the cheap mechs by Shimano, while not so refined, are well made and reliable, and that he personally rode with Tourney rear mechs. for years with no trouble. In my opinion there is too much 'mech' snobbery about, which is fine if you can afford it. I recently had quite a nice Vitus road bike stolen on which I had done about 12,000k on a Shimano 2300 set up - which I have often heard the purists sneer at - but which had performed faultlessly up to then and looked as if it was going to carry right on doing so.

Really good and thorough explanation. Entry level bikes aren't the greatest but they work and I think without them a lot of people wouldn't even get started cause they just aren't willing to spend over 500 dollars. People want to ride the bike much more than they would like understand it. And that's OK!

He is right, Tourney is good chice for new/occasional cyclists. It has been 4 months since i have owned Road Bike equipped with Tourney. Soon i will upgrade it. Not because it is so bad. Just because now i have gained more experience and ready to spend more money on something better. Comparing to what you pay Tourney is good choice and you can live with it since it shifts fairly smoothly and performs adequately.

Some of the lower end frames don't have great alignment especially those from Bangladesh, Cambodia and to a degree Indonesia so I wonder if actually the old style square taper brackets are better for those, also many Claris bikes still come with square taper bottom brackets as they use a third party crankset. I'm happy with square taper on a budget bike but definitely feel Claris overall is a huge jump above Tourney. Tourney sounds like its suitable for touring but it certainly isn't I've actually read Claris as the recommended groupset for touring bikes as not only is it strong with very dependable shifting but whatever country you ride in parts are always available. In rich countries its close to bottom of the range but in poorer countries its often nearer the top of the range but parts should be available. For reliability of shifting I think Claris is one of the best but then it only has to shift between 8 cogs so the tolerances are huge compared to a 12 speed cassette. Claris probably provides the best bang per buck of any road groupset and definitely the entry point for a great road bike with tourney being false economy. I do think tourney is lower weight though, many tourney bikes have basic freewheels with threaded rear hubs and weak plastic derailleurs its no surprise to me that a tourney bike can be lighter than Claris. Claris has the much stronger freehub with much cleaner shifting. It's also worth pointing out that in my opinion the reason tourney is harder to dial in for shifting is not the tapered bottom bracket it's the wobble caused by a freewheel and threaded hub that is where the wobble is, they are low end components that are not precision made and are antiquated technology. Many people still like and even prefer square tapered bottom brackets and they come on some pretty competent entry level mountain bikes. Also again if you were touring you would go square taper as its common everywhere.

Problem could be some claris bikes have a worse frame (not double butted) and quick release instead of thru axles or missing the carbon fork. The sora version have all this things. It depends on what is the cheapest model. If claris is the cheapest (cube attain) then you lose some good features of the higher models. If tourney (like here Scott) is the cheapest, then claris model often get this features. Good video.

IMO that derailleur is just junk and shouldn't even be on the bike. Id happily have paid more for one fit for purpose because its not the cost of the better derailleur that is the issue, its the cost of the grief that goes with buying junk. I am using a Shimano Tourney for my RB, and some Shimano Non-Series for my mountain bike. And both works well, I average a 22 kph ride, and shifts gear once every 30 minutes (!_!). . . but yeah, if you want performance, then you should start with Claris

They offer different Tourney lineups, TZ with 7 speed, TX with 8 speed and A 070 (7 speed) for road use (especially road type shifters/brake levers). The Tourney derailleurs are made with little stiffness, but the Tourney road type levers/shifters can also be used with better 8 speed derailleurs (every 8/9 speed derailleur can be used for 7 speed too). You could also combine the Tourney levers with a TRP Spyre disc brake. The Tourney TX 505 hubs offer 8 speed freehub bodies (which can also be used for 7 speed with 8 speed cassettes with one non used cog) with center lock disc rotors

I recently had an expensive road bike stolen and for various reasons had to economise severely on it's replacement. I bought - wait for it - a Decathlon BTwin Triban 100, pretty well the cheapest road bike I could find. This uses a Tourney rear derailleur and I can say, that after 1200 km, it has been absolutely fine - never missed a change and never shed the chain. The bike, in fact, surprised me greatly and I have to say rides as well, maybe even better, than the one I lost. This is probably due to the frame, which is excellent, being the same one as is used on their more expensive models. I got the weight of the bike down to 10.3kg by replacing the supplied gravel type tyres with road tyres and overall I am very pleased with my purchase. Another thing which initially concerned me - gear snobs please note - the changer is a Shimano AO50 palm shifter, which I thought would be a real pain after years of using brifters. Well, guess what, I soon got used to it - although a bit clumsy it's only akin to using the once universal down tube shifters - and to my amazement I find I actually now prefer it to brifters, because you can run up or down through the gears much more quickly. No doubt this comment will be widely derided but I am just speaking as I find. Obviously 'horses for courses' applies here - as an octogenarian my rides are not as fast and lumpy as they used to be - so you probably wouldn't race on this machine but it is no slouch if pushed - and the Tourney is fine.
