For any ducati owners watching this video...It doesn't matter which measuring device you want to use because we have an actual shim measuring tool that fits inside the calipers/micrometer along with the shim in question. Search for it online and you'll find them.

Good video! One point, I think you mean a digital caliper rather than a vernier caliper. (Although, as you point out, the point is that you should use a micrometer rather than a caliper.)

Hi Shane really enjoy your videos mate, and thank you for posting them. Can please ask what brand is that digital micrometer you are using in this video? cheers Bob

The shims on my bike are 13mm so using a digital vernier is very effeftive... Also to check the larger sizes shims are you saying you need both micrometer and verniers to check pperfeftly.. using the micrometer only would only measure the center and not the outer area of the larger shim..

I dont get it. I have two different calliper and all numbers on my shims are exactly identical what my calliper shows (+/- 0.01mm). so for me its absolutely accurat. if a shim size is on outside border smaller or bigger than in the middle, its IMO a bad shim and should be replaced
@How2Wrench
@How2Wrench 5 жыл бұрын
We absolutely agree that the shim should be replaced if that was the case. You have to keep in mind that there are shim sizes out there where the shim is wider than the cam lope and does not have full contact with the cam lobe. Also keep in mind that we are duplicating best practices as outlined by the manufacturer and "skill set" training. Thanks for commenting and adding value to our community! SOOOOOOOOOOO depends on how critical and budgets. Sets range so much. I love Starrett but even I can't afford them. Thing is I have access to them to compare mine against. Shane Conley I realize this is an incredibly old comment. But I think it's important info, so Ima share it for anyone else who sees this question and is looking for some advice. I think it's very important to buy the best quality tools you can afford, and Starrett is about the best of the best. And the best part is that anyone can afford Starrett, if you actually spend some time looking for the right deal. Literally just keep an eye on eBay and you'll find ridiculous deals on Starrett gear. For example, A couple weeks ago I bought a like-new condition Starrett No. 216 micrometer (that's the one they call a "digital" micrometer, although it's not electronic, just like the one you showed in this video) for $26, instead of the $350 MSRP. Functions perfectly, carbide faces are in perfect condition, cosmetically a 9/10, and came with the original box and all the original paperwork. You just gotta spend some time looking !

Bucket/shim style vavletrains are such a pain. Why would anyone think having to remove the cams every 10-20k miles is better than adjustable rockers? It increases performance margianlly and slightly extends the maintence schedule, but the difficulty and cost of the maintenece makes it a null point. Honestly that a big reason i like Harleys. Hydraulic lifters means no valve adjustments. In reality the low maintence should be a selling point for HD but they don't make as big a deal of it as they should. HD might cost a bit more, but one valve service on a 4 cylinder bike will make up that cost difference right there.

you do know inline 4s use rockers too??? there goes your point right out the window.

Honda has made multiple bikes with hydraulic lifters and there are tons of other motorcycles out there with screw-and-locknut valve adjusters. It's not unique to Harley by any means.

So do you really need to measure the shim if it has the size laser etched on it?
@How2Wrench

We grabbed Shane quick and he said he thought he covered why in the video. He shared with me (I'm new) the only think you have to measure is final clearance but for reasons stated in his lessons it can save you time. I'm going to watch this video right now and learn what he said as to why! One of these days I hope to move from the office to the shop! He has a few other tricks up his sleeve he plans on making videos on. If you need help sooner choose and option below! That’s a great question for Shane directly! We are just the social media team. Shane does answer questions when he get's back around to non members eventually so hang tight, FYI >>>> he does member ones daily! He just returned from overseas training techs and his inbox is slammed with requests. He is scheduling time each day again to answer techline orders. He does not have the bandwidth to provide free email replies as his schedule is full with shop customers, training schedules, and one on ones. There's good news though! Shane has 2 solutions for you. One is a deep dive one-on-one with him with video, email and phone support. The other is a "quick fan support" option when it's a quick answer and just helps support the time for him to stop wrenching or training and get you in the direction that a free video had you close. Links to each are below. Hope this message makes sense to you as a decent human being that also works for a living and gets it! Make it a great day! The one-on-one service. Could you not just add something small of a known thickness to rest in between the ridges? Rather than use a more expensive tool? If this was about accuracy vs precision that would be one thing.

I do not see any difference between vernier and micrometer : I tell you why ? because when we measure the valves gaps with feeler gauge and shims size with vernier : we will understand if we need bigger or smaller shims so if the vernier measurement is increased than we want , it's okay we gonna increase more to compensate the size we want
