One last comment: for anyone who knows maybe only the major and minor chords and maybe the pentatonics and are feeling overwhelmed. PLEASE go learn the major scale. Knowing the major scale out of this E position unlocks the arpeggios, the mixolydian scale, the natural minor scale(it’s just the C major scale starting on A) etc etc Doing Brian’s videos on the major scale really allowed me to progress through everything else.

Look Brian, This is fantastic. As I’ve mentioned before I have completed your “foundations course” which has warped me light years from where I’ve been stuck for over a decade. This video was a great way for me to test my knowledge and make sure I could play all the various ideas without having to reference. I’m figuering out all triad chords in all 6 CAGED shapes Major aswell minor chords And I extend the triads to 4 tone chords because I play jazz and jazz is more than I IV V three tone chords . So now am busy with G shape chords Cmaj7 Dmin7 E min7 Fmaj7 G7. Ami7 Bmin7b5 and Cmaj7 again one octave up. And I try to get all chords close to each other within 4 frets. So after this I will study the E shape and will try to mix the chordforms of the C A G and E shapes together Still the E and D shape to go . I pick up the good and interesting things out of your lessons . I am not so interested in the different popmusic blues styles Looking forward to a more challenging songs of you with different keys and II V I progressions which change within one song.

Even though I guess it technically isn't CAGED because it leaves the box.... 3 string chord scales are what made it click for me what CAGED is and how it works. Might be worth a video. Or multiple. Could also demonstrate how modes work with those.

@@jeffdubuque3755 I will attempt to explain in text. In my example you will use the shapes of cowboy chords D Major, D Minor, and D Diminished. Those are the shapes. If I say Minor you use the shape of D Minor. On these strings with those shapes the G string is always the 5th. The B string is always the Root. The E string is always the 3rd. Your in the key of D Major. You're going to play a D chord scale on those bottom 3 strings. You're in D so don't worry if you accidentally hit the Open D along the way. Your middle finger is the Root when you play a D Major cowboy cord. Run the D Major scale down the B string. You will move your ring finger down the neck in the step intervals of a major scale. Ring finger runs the scale. In a Major scale the chord types are Major (1), Minor (2), Minor (3), Major (4), Major (5), Minor (6), Diminished (7), and you're back to 1 which is D Major. You will play a Major Chord Scale. You will hear the D Major scale in the chords. They will be the chords of the key of D Major. The bit that will help everything click is this. Slide your D Major Cowboy chord shape back 1 fret. Now it is an C# Major. Make sure not to accidentally hit the Open D string this time. And everything works exactly the same as before as you run a major scale with major scale chord type intervals. Everything is just transposed to C# instead of D. Works exactly how a Capo works. Now the MODES bit that hopefully will click. Go back to normal D Major. So....if you didn't know.....modes of a scale are all the same notes. Your Root is what changes. I'm going to KEEP YOU IN D MAJOR, because it may help things click. The first mode is the Major scale. You I assume know that already. The SECOND Mode is Dorian. Here's what to do. Instead of D Major, start with D Minor. Your starting with what was SHAPE 2 of D Major. But now it is Shape 1. Your 7 used to be Diminished. But now your 6 is Diminished. The way to think about this is you have transposed they sequence of chord Types. What was first is now last. And that is the only difference. Start on D Minor. Ring Finger runs the Major Scale (Dorian Mode. See edit below) on the B String again. But now it's Minor (1), Minor (2), Major (3), Major (4), Minor (5), Diminished (6), Major (7), and then you're back to the 1 which in this case is D Diminished. You just played a D Dorian chord scale. ( EDIT! THIS SECTION IS AN EDIT TO CORRECT A MISTAKE. When you do the Mode shift of the chord type pattern, you also shift the major scale intervals by 1 as well. So it is WHWWWHW. That is Dorian) If instead of D Dorian you wanted to play E Dorian.....it would be exactly like my original example of D Major. Except now the 2 chord (E Minor) is Root. You're starting on the E Minor. So now it will be E Dorian. It works the same with just running a single note scale on the B String. Run a D Major scale on the B String. Then do it again but start on the 2nd note. It will be E Dorian mode of the D Major scale. Way way way back in some Rob Chapman video, a really really old one, he taught that chord scale. I learned it. I kept on for years using it and wondering how to use it on other ways. Many years later I figured out how to use that knowledge. One day I started the pattern on a different fret. Then some other day I started on the 2 shape instead of the 1 shape. Then later I thought.....well.....I can do this with other Triad shapes on other strings too! You can do the same with your A shapes or your E shapes. You can do it with any shapes as long as your fingers will reach the changes. On the G, B, and A strings, the SHAPE of a D Major Chord will ALWAYS make a Major chord. No matter what finger your put your Ring Finger on along the B string, if you make the shape of a D Major you will be making a Major chord. If you put your Ring Finger on F and make the shape of a D Major it will be an F Major. If you take your Cowboy Chord A shape and slide it up 2 frets it's a B now. If you use the A Minor shape it will be a B Minor. Etc. You can make a Major Triad on any 3 consecutive strings. As long as you know which string is the root, 3rd, and 5th on those strings with that shape, you know how to make any Major Minor or Diminished chord in any position. Cowboy Shapes D Major is a 2nd inversion. A Major is a 2nd inversion. E Major is a 2nd inversion. C Major....if you play the G on the E string is 2nd inversion. 2nd inversions are 5th, Root, 3rd. So I just told you how to use all consecutive groupings of 3 strings. And they work the same because they are all 2nd inversions. The 5th is always your top finger. The Root is always your middle finger. The 3rd is always your bottom finger. Now you know how to make 2nd inversion triads everywhere on the neck 😉. Here's where it gets cooler...... Slide the 3rd up to the 4th. That's a Sus4. Slide the 3rd back to the 2. That's a Sus2. Slide the 5th back 1 fret. That's a Flat 5. Etc. You can do a lot with all that stuff. A Major chord shape is always a Major Chord Shape. The major scale pattern is always the same combination of whole and half steps. The pattern of the major scale contains every mode of the major scale. The Minor scale contains every mode of the minor scale. Hopefully this was understandable 😅.

Brilliant - I just found a cheat to find the mixolydian easily: A mixolydian = the 5th mode of D ionian and D is the 4th degree of A ionian. Just move your finger 1 fret vertically below in the same fret and play that major scale. Took me 20 years to figure this out.

Thanks Brian. Of any of the lower priced used round necked resonators I see on Reverb et al (National, Dobro, Gretsch, etc) which is a decent one. I'm open to wood top like EC plays or all metal. What I'm looking for is a resonator I can set up and leave in open tuning to practice both open tuning and slide on. A dedicated guitar for just that without breaking the bank ($400-600)@@activemelody

Ok, so we started at the C. I thought we were working with the caged system. So you start with the C shape, which was awesome. Then you go and jump to the E shape. Caged Ain't Spelled that way. I am so confused.

Each of the 5 shapes are independent of one another. There is no "do this one, then do that one" - I will cover all 5 positions.

Doesn't matter really you just start the word over when you finish the order. For example E chord with E shape moves down the neck to be E chord with D shape. Then back to E chord with C shape. So you'd be spelling EDCAG. Whatever chord shape you're starting with you just play the next letters and then start the word over. The word really isn't important it's just a tool to help you learn it and memorise it. Proficient players moving the shapes around aren't consciously thinking "ahhh I'm gonna be spelling CAGED now"
