You can also use a micro controller to map from one value to the desired value, then it would be right across the board.

Great video. Does the temperature gauge have a connection to the ECU ? On the 1990 316i , M40 engine. My temperature gauge just stopped working a few days ago , After I replaced the car battery. I am suspecting the cluster board. I have shorted out the coolant switch wire after disconnecting from the switch on the cylinder head , the temperature gauge still doesn't move at all. A bit of a surge could have blown something in the dashboard cluster. It starts up fine. Just need the temp gauge going again. I wouldn't even drive it for 500 meters without a functional temp gauge. Thank you

Frank, I cant wait to use your guide to do my own build, I have been dreaming about an n54 swapped e30 for years. Thank you for figuring all this out for me and everybody else. One question I do have is can the ECU you implemented accept the values MHD or JB4 changes?
@Garageaholic4 жыл бұрын
dubhummer75 Yea but once you flash over the Kassel CAs removal, you overwrite that code and would then need CAS

Hi boss , After making the swap, while the engine is running, my warning lights on the display (oil, brake, battery) appear for a second and then disappear. repeats this from time to time. But the vehicle does not stop, everything else works. What exactly could be the problem?

Very nice Frank. Actually I know, but that's' probably because I drove E30's for 15 years...... Dutch regards Nico.

Currently doing an N54 swap on our shop e30. Curious how to have AC working and how to have speedometer working.

@webwebber2 жыл бұрын
so, for what I understood is, you have to install a potentiometer somewhere between the coolant sensor and the temp gauge?
@Garageaholic2 жыл бұрын
No - the pot was to demonstrate the change in indicator from gauge. I provided the resistance values in the video.
@icebear19354 жыл бұрын
Wow great info, presume oil temp gauge on the e30 M3 is a similar concept
@Garageaholic4 жыл бұрын
Exactly the same concept actually! But the oil gauge has the temp numbers on them already so I wouldn’t mess with it with in line resistance

is that e3p 325i? mine m40 318 had a different speedometer..

My car runs fine and doesn’t leak coolant but the coolant arrow on the gauge stays in the middle but the red light turned on red but the arrow was in the middle what does that mean ?

@@Garageaholic correction 383ohms cold out of the block. My problem is that the temp gauge wont move over the blue marked area, no matter as of how long i run it, si board is replaced. Rev gauge works, grounding nut and point is fine. U reckon its the sensor messing?

I was driving my e30 today and i got spooked cause the temp spiked to almost the 2nd hash tag to the hot side so I eased off the gas and it took awhile until it went below the middle has tag, would you say this is normal for a M20 engine?

Thank you for the video ! Is it also normal that the indicated temperature on an E30 316 Carburator (M10 engine) is almost touching the red zone before getting back to the middle (and then going to the red zone again etc...) ?
@Garageaholic3 жыл бұрын
Nope that’s not normal. I think you might have a bad radiator fan switch or air trapped in your coolant system!

Wow Frank. Very informative. I did not know this. So in the e30 are you able to get an oil temperature gauge as well with the current cluster? Does the e36 require the same amount of work to get the cluster to work?
@Garageaholic4 жыл бұрын
Integration of the oil temp requires a specific rear backing plate to work! I will actually be taking apart both an m3 and 325 clusters and compare them and I’ll let you know!
@hevendranarayansamy27934 жыл бұрын
@@Garageaholic yeah the E36 m3 s50b32 has the oil temperature gauge instead of the instant consumption gauge. Not sure if the e34 m5 has it as well. As always nice work and keep it up. I always look forward to your videos.
