I'm out bush with the swag, billy and fire at the moment watching this (magic of the internet, can't believe I've got service!) already nearly stepped on a whip snake and now I'm spider paranoid THANKS MATE 😆

maaaate, the last 10 seconds got me pumped - the fireplace is done! what an achievement. so much progress on this trip, the house is becoming legit livable! you need to possibly get the fire wood up off the floor too - snakes and spiders flock to woodpiles, might as well go all out with visitor proofing the place.
@AlexDoes3 жыл бұрын
Haha visitor proof, maybe cover it all in a big camo net lol. The fireplace has a bit more to go, it needs about 2 feet added to the height of the chimney....I also have one more modification for inside in mind. But if you think it all looks legit now wait to you see what the walls look like with mud, fricken awesome! I agree about the wood pile too, I want a covered area at the front like an awning for a small wood pile plus a second wood shed away from the main structure. It will likely go next to the open entertaining area with second fireplace I have planned.

Glad you took the efforts to kep the creepy-crawlies out of the shelter. There's bee discussions in other places that the mixing in of organics (IE: straw, etc.) can help eliminate the mud from cracking. And I agree with the other poster suggesting a step into your 'dig-hole. You realize that eventually (as the rain comes) that hole will fill up with water. Might want to think about where that water will travel to (hopefully not towards the structure). Who knows... you could eventually get to a time for a new 'spin-off series" called "Alex Does Pools". Cheers mate, stay healthy, stay safe!

Cheers John. Yes I am 100% with you on the organic matter. Spoiler alert - I have started the mud on the walls including organic material mixed in. I was thinking on my last visit I should have put some in that clay. When I come to mudding the walls from inside the mud with organic material will likely go right down to the ground and cover the clay. Must say I like the idea of the clay hole as a pool lol. It does collect water during rain, mostly from seepage through the ground as the site is on a gradual slope, it does drain away ok also. Hope you're well mate.

We're near Bendigo and also felt the earthquake. Hubby and I thought the same as you, that it was windy, even had the roaring sound of a wind gust, but not a leaf was swaying. Just shows you're an ace builder because your structure withstood a 5.9 magnitude tremor!

Thanks Stelle, I should be able to get some sort of structural certification! lol

Thanks for the videos. Shelter looks tidy when you removed the firewood. Have you thought of building an external wood store? Also consider digging a step into the side of the hole, to make it easier to get in and out.
@AlexDoes3 жыл бұрын
Cheers Shane, yeah you're the second person to suggest a wood shed, it's definitely something I would like to add. I'm thinking of extending the roof at the front to cover a small pile of wood and then a larger wood shed away from main structure. As for the hole I might just need to add steps at some point, who knows lol

Nice job on the spider wall Alex. I love nature too and being out in it, but if I had somewhere to build a permanent shelter... two words....Surface Spray! Fairly certain we don't have funnel webs up hear yet but still.. not a fan of spiders.
@AlexDoes3 жыл бұрын
Yeah there's plenty of funnel web holes in the area but I'm yet to actually see one out and about, even with all the materials I'm constantly gathering off the ground. The risk is too great within the shelter at night to have them that close though. They're not hard to catch if you come across one though and valuable for anti-venom production.

Hey mate,loving the vids, any good ideas for hiding the roof off such builds from google sat so she blends in? Faced with same task on the one I’m building atm
@AlexDoes2 ай бұрын
@timeisnow9855 cheers mate. I think if you want to hide from satellites, your best bet would be a military ghillie net or natural foliage from the surrounding area.
