Real quick I go to a school for high-performance/automotive technology and the guy in this video explains things 1000x more clearly than any instructor I've had thus far. You would think that a University would hire people like this to teach the next generation of high-performance mechanics. Still, they cut as much costs as possible and hire instructors that lack the passion to transfer that knowledge to the next generation because someone with this caliper of patience and skill level would obviously require payment that reflects that. The only real advantage of going to a school like the one I'm currently enrolled in is the access to tools and certain equipment so if anyone is considering attending a university or institute that "teaches" high-performance/automotive technology or anything related to racing and/or mechanical work please make sure you have experience in that subject or the willingness to teach yourself because I've seen so many people drop out or get kicked out after one or two sessions and it is genuinely saddening.

This video helped prepare me for rebuilding my 2005 FZ6 engine which is almost identical . When you set the final drive shaft in place there's a half circlip that sets in a groove to keep it in place and I forgot to install mine and had to go back and split the cases . Thankfully since I wasn't actually removing the crankshaft I didn't have to take off the head or re-do the timing .

I know this video is old but the Yamaha manual states: 1st tighten M8 crankcase bolts to 14ft lbs (as in video). 2nd, loosen, than torque to 8.9 (as in the video). Here is where it goes off the rails a bit. 3rd Stage is "1"-"7", "10" + 50 degrees. Bolt "8", "9" + 75 degrees. This makes sense as the 75 degree angle bolts are shouldered. You don't tighten ALL the bolts to 50 degrees THAN 75 degrees. This is straight out of the factory manual. I know I'm a bit late to the party but better late than never.

I'm pretty sure, you have a wrong tightening procedure at 11:45. The manual has two different angles for the two different screw-lengths: you need a increased prolongation for a longer shaft to establish the same preload as a short one. So the eight 85mm screws #1-7 and #10 get ~50° degrees in a third step and the screws #8+9 get ~75°. You are damaging your engine threads with way to much torque.

Great videos, however, when it comes to rod / crank bearings never solely rely on the yellow green blue bearing color bull crap. Always verify your clearances with a micrometer and a dial bore gauge. Your looking for .002 -.003 oil clearance. Relying on color recommendations is asking for problems. I’ve built race engines for 25 years and very rarely are the clearances correct based on the color charts.

I had to laugh when you were talking about the piston rings and putting light oil on them. I was helping a friend work on his engine over in my garage. I have enough different tools that I could work on just about anything with an engine. I showed my friend how to put the rings on. Explain to him just to put a light coating of oil on the rings and just a little bit from the rings down to coat just a light enough coat to make it work. Unknown to me at that time my definition and his definition of a light coating were complete opposites. Once we had everything back together and did the first start up we smoked up the whole garage. I was seconds away from turning the motor off when I finally noticed that the smoke was getting less and less. It wasn't until I talked to him that I found out he almost basically poured oil on the bottom half of the pistons and of course with that much coverage and coats the cylinders above the range. I really started laughing out loud when you just talked about the oil on the rings. My friend must have known I was just writing about him. In the middle of my comment he just text me to see if I want to go riding today since our temperature are at normal for this time of year. I really enjoy watching videos like this. I don't care what you think you know you don't know everything. There's different ways of doing something and I'd like to learn all of them. I couldn't tell you how many lawn mower videos I watch. I don't work on any of this stuff for a paycheck. The only thing I ever charge friends and family and neighbors for is parts. I don't mind helping someone out but I'm not going to pay for their parts to do it. It's just now I'm retired and I like having different projects to do. I'm thinking about building myself a racing bike that's how I came to see your video. You have a lot of knowledge and I do appreciate you sharing that with the world. Things like this is the biggest reason the internet was useful for in the beginning. To share knowledge of different things with people from around the world. I also made sure I'm hitting the like button as I'm watching the videos and I have already hit the subscribe button. I'm looking forward to watching more.

One more thing: when shifting gears is it normal for the output shaft to need some rotation before the sprockets fully slide in? Because just rotating the input shaft by hand won't allow the full sliding of some sprockets. I'm almost done with my rebuild and wanna make sure I've installed the gearbox properly. Thanks!

I've been going back and forth on the bearing sizing... I have a 2006 motor ready to rebuild. My Crank reads 222212222. Confirmed all of the connecting rods say 5 so I have all new bearings for those. The mains I am confused... my case half is stamped with "6 5". I am assuming the 6 is for the mains and the 5 is for the rods? However when I looked at the old main bearings they were all brown. The last bearing, however, the brown was nearly worn away and barely identifiable... I'm not sure if it was installed incorrectly from the factory? I could always order a brown and a green for that last main and plastigauge but a little at a loss for ordering mains... Any help would be greatly appreciated!
@davidfrank28243 жыл бұрын
Let me ask you do you ever weigh the connecting rods and bearings and piston and then grind them to match one another? Whenever I tear down an engine I always try to balance the pistons and rods. Not 100% sure if it makes that big of a difference but that was the way a close friend showed me how to do. torque degree gauge that you were using could you tell me what brand it is and perhaps where I could find one. The one I use is mechanical not digital and as you probably know looking down at a mechanical one you could be off a few degrees and not realize it because you look at your age at a different angle than the last bolt that you tightened.

These engines also seem to lose life every rebuild. 1st 72k , 2nd 34k, 3rd 9k. That's paying $3500+ going by manual. I wish I was in the States where all these bikes are a dime a dozen. Canada your forced to buy a new bike or rebuild. Ebay isnt feasible due to price of engine, shipping, installation. Again, forced to rebuild or buy new.

I called the number and one lady hung up on my and the other guy didn't know what I was talking about. If you could be of help that would be great. Thanks in advance. Oh and they think the best option was for me to buy all they types of bearings then try them on to make sure they would work and ship the rest back. I personal think that is a waste of money. The bike is a 99 ZX9r and I am looking to get crank and rode bearings. The only thing on the crank is the letter (B) and a number (1). I can send a picture if needed. Sorry for the long message but just confused.

You can take your crankshaft to a machine shop and have them mic out your journals and order bearings which come in .25 mm increments. You want .25mm larger than journal size for oil clearance . Example : If journal is 30.5mm order 30.75mm bearings .
