This video will demonstrate how easy a transmission change can be on any superbike. If you are not equipped with the knowledge, manuals and tools to perform this job...Don't! For those that have an appreciation for engines...this video is for you. Don't be scared of the unknown. My motto is..."It's just nuts and bolts."
2004-2006 Yamaha R1 Transmission replacement, but I believe these procedures will work for all years. Special tools are needed. Torque specs are required. Label and bag all parts. Use red loctite inside of the engine, blue on the outside. Replace all rubber gaskets, and outer gaskets with new ones. Use Yamabond #4 for your semi dry gasket. Take your time and have patients.

That service manual has saved me so much time and money. I love my 5vy. Fourth gear is making a lot of noise. Will be referring to your videos in the near future. Damn though, new transmission at 20k miles? Im around 57k miles, oil changes every 1k miles.

Nice to hear you mention the "beauty" of the mechanics in the close tolerance transmissions, they really are a work of 'art'...some are better than others but compared to my Royal Enfield 4 speed gearbox, they really have come a LONG way.

Bro your a fantastic teacher 🤙.. I have an 05 r1 that grinds only when I start the bike, after it's started it runs flawlessly..I'm assuming it's my generator driven gear?.. the flywheel is old and has visible wear but all the gear teeth match up nicely but I keep burning up the starter clutch inside the drive gear . Any advise on the issue?? Please help I'm about to loose my mind!! I'm more than ready to get back on 2 wheels

I'm sure you fixed the problem by now but I would have open the clutch cover, pulled the clutch and check the gear engagement to solve that issue. Replaced all parts that look wore out or not in alignment. It didn't sound like a teanny issue if it happens on start up

I believe the dogs are part of the actual gears. They interlock when the gears are moved. So essentially the forks engage the dogs

He is correct what you called the male end of the gear is called the dog and the shift fork is what slides which engages the dogs on the gears

I just bought a 03 r6 with 15k and there is a bit of driveline lash or transmission slop. I’ll try to explain the best I can. When riding the bike at lower speeds the I can feel the slack in transmission when I’m on and off the throttle, it happens in all gears but not very noticeable at higher speeds as it’s easier to be smoother on the throttle, I’m just curious what this could be from and if the bike can still last while with this problem. Because other than it worrying me alittle it doesn’t really bother me. Everything else with the bike is great runs very strong lots of power. Thank you sir appreciate it.

I personally like stock gearing. Its better for cruising in lower gears and top end. There are many things you can do to make your bike accelerate better without changing the gearing.

I used blue loctite cause the servicemanuel doesn't give specifications wich colour you should use. It just says ''Loctite''. Why should you you use red instead of blue? Should i be worried now? They say if you ever want to take it apart again blue is best to go.

Mine started making a knocking noise a weak ago. My mechanic thought it was the clutch so I bought a racing kit and it wasn't the problem although the original clutch was warn and had burn spots. The knock sound can be heard in natural also and doesn't stop. Is it the male part broken which goes into the gear groove?
@Gypsyman40
@Gypsyman40 7 жыл бұрын
Darin b if you are sure the knocking is coming from the clutch and you can feel that when you pull the clutch in its difficult, I would check to see if the clutch hub nut is still tightened in spec. Meaning, when you look at the clutch hub, which is what holds the clutch plates and keeps the clutch engaged with the crank. Look to see if the are aligned and in contact with one another. It should be aligned perfectly. If all is well, the only way to look further is to split the case. Good luck and take your time.

thank u v very much, i really respect your videos and your patients with thsese motors i was very scared and worried i messed something up but i did order a new chain from motomummy the bike runs like a champ, i cant wait to install this new setup its a Drivin chain 520 set they say the new chains and the one they recomended are lighter and stronger then my OEM 530, i had ordered from AMAZON a JT chain 530 and sprockets, i have checked the wheel bearings they are top shape, the tension and alingment i will make sure its perfect, im OCD so, i cant ride without doinging it 3 or more times, check check lol, i did take it to local shop he tech rode bike hes conculusion was nothing in trans is messed up, he thinks its a POS chain, and recomeded me getting a good or better chain, DID, or DRIVIN , i told him what it was and he noted that those are not very good quality, cheap mass produced, well i NEVER stop learning, spelling not great sorry

GREAT right up i have a 04 r1 i replaced the chain AND SPROCKETs now i get a almost whine sound i have no isues wirh gears or shifting SOMEONE told me it COULD be the bearing behind the countre shaft seal . If my shaft was bent lets say wouldn't i notice a worse noise THEN a whine?? I HAVE had bike on rear stand ran it using a Listening device and i cannot see any wobble on shaft i had local yamaha SHOP tech ride it he said it is loud but im a,worry wort ... THE bike chain tracks great its a JT 530 CHAIN I HAVE THE NEE REAR SPROCKET used BOTH front oem and aftermarket SPROCKET few guys told me to spend money on better CHAIN . THEY said jt chains arnt that good should i try a real good 520 DID SET UP? AND SEE? HELP ANY THING ILL LISTEN
@Gypsyman40
@Gypsyman40 6 жыл бұрын
Ragecage07 the shaft is not bent. That really isn't possible. The chain tension could be too tight. The rear wheel bearing could be bad. I would buy a new chain and make sure the tension is correct. It should just touch the bottom plastic chain guard when the axle nut has been tighten. Not likely that the bearing on the primary shaft is bad. The tolerances are very tight inside the engine. There shouldn't be a way for dirt and grim to damage it.

Hello. I saw your video for change transmission of R1. I would like to know because when I turned upside down the engine the oil has come out from suction horns. El Matteo yes, you should be fine. The oil will drop back down thru the engine. No problem
@ITizAkhRy

Thanks. During work I have more questions: 1) You must remove the oil / water pump or they can be remain attached to crankcase (just unhooking the chain)? 2) The oil pump chain has the references or it's just a chain for pump run? 3) The gear behind clutch basket has a point or signal to contact with the crankshaft gear? Sorry for my stupid questions, but it's my first time that I open an engine. Regards from Italy.
@Gypsyman40
@Gypsyman40 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the oil/water pump must be removed from the engine. The chain has no reference point and must be removed after you remove the clutch basket. Then pull the chain out when you remove the water/oil pump. The clutch basket has to be fully engaged with the crankshaft when you reinstall it. Behind the basket there are notches that must go on the water pump chain ring perfectly. These are great questions. Feel free to ask more.
