This video shows pas de bourrées 1) en dehors/en dedans, 2) dessus-dessous and en tournent, and 3) in 4th position/ forwards-backwards
Pas de bourrées are linking steps that look simple but always cause confusion in class. Practising them with cou-de-pied (pointed foot on the ankle) instead of straight legs often helps students to remember where to place their feet.

Thank you for showing us this step. One question: I see pas de bourree forward and backward only done not changing feet. Could it be done changing feet or is it stuck this way? I tried to do it changinge feet and it seems okay. Maybe that would be something else?

Thank you for your question. The forward and backward one is called pas de bourrée bateau and is a regular ballet step, therefore not meant to change feet. What you may be thinking of this like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqKnf4qPorJ-Z80

@@HolisticBallet Thank you! I watched it and it's a whole different thing. Also, pas de bourree turning around in a circle was another thing I got stuck for a while.

Very helpful but you should stretch your knees to your maximum when you’re on the demi-pointe, almost like thinking that your knee is going to show up in the back of your leg. Very elegant movement!

Dear Athena, thank you very much for your comment. And also for brining up the issue with the knees. You may not believe it but I have extremely hyperextended legs. Although, it is a wonderful aesthetic in the ballet world, I do not promote it as it can cause many problems: • it diverts the energy/ strength from the hip to the foot and weakens the leg • students tend to 'sit' in their hyperextended knees, therefore creating pressure and twists in the hip, knee, and ankle joints • it can disengage the hamstrings, adductor and external rotator muscles One should never push the knees to the back as this can overstretch the PCL (posterior crucial ligament at the back of the knee) and destabilise the leg and making the dancer prone to injury. Instead, you want to pull up the kneecap so you create length and strength. Of course, there are many dancers that are strong and use their hyperextensions. I did so too when I was dancing professionally, but for my students a straight, strong leg with balanced muscles tone is much more beneficial.

Holistic Ballet I have to say that as a professional dancer myself with the Greek opera I strongly disagree, because there are ways to stretch your knees to your maximum without hurting yourself, if your body as a whole has a good alignment and you’re strong enough. As for the teaching method I agree as it is the way I danced in my early years. Later on , having had experience, I was able to understand how to fully extend my leg without hurting myself. So it’s really a matter of experience.
