I remember my dad having one of these when he was in the service. When I joined they already went to the ACH, which I find to me more comfortable.

Interesting video. Thanks for making it. 19:54 There's actually, at least, one company making PASGT helmets that only have four holes. One in front of each ear protection area and one behind the same area. Global Armour is one such company. Their helmets use a four point chin strap, so there's no need for the extra pair of holes.

Excellent vid, thank you. It was very helpful indeed. I realize now that the last couple that have been in my hands were screwed up by someone and missing parts. Thanks to your vid I know how to fix and clean them now. I just had a few questions and some comments - wonder what you think;. I had only ever used a Kevlar helmet for SAR rappelling training but I had bought a couple throughout time when I saw one in a surplus store just to keep one around - in case. "in case" has been when I needed an impromptu motorcycle or whatever helmet. In-case was also handy when a guy in my old apartments went nuts and shot at the cops, They somehow missed me when they got all the neighbors out so I was stuck in the middle when the assault went down. I found it reassuring to wear when I jumped into the bathtub when the flash-bangs went off and the bullets started to fly. Aside from that I've worn it out in the desert a couple times shooting. I saw your vid on cheap mags and was guilty of the same. I wore the helmet when I was testing them so I had something to tap them on. So; #1 Is there a PDF available somewhere of that manual? I've never come across one in a surplus store, #2 Is using it for tapping mags appropriate? Is it OK for the helmet? Is it OK for the mag? #3 I completely disassembled mine after watching the vid and now see what is missing, wrong, and what needs to be replaced- I noticed there are some scuffs and scratches where the green paint has rubbed off a bit, especially where someone kept putting it down on the crown. I see guys using alcohol to clean them out and people paint them- Is it safe to paint, can I wash the shell in water? What Chemicals are damaging? #4 Everyone seems to agree that PASGT is Level IIIA - Are the new ACH or MICH a higher level? or are they just lighter and differently shape to permit comm gear? Any Idea why they got rig of the front visor lip? #5 What do you think about these kits to upgrade the suspension of the PASGT to like the new ACH? They seem to be expensive. As you showed as far as retention you can use other available stuff, but is there any truth to extra close cell foam padding providing another level of protection from bulging or sudden shock? I've seen those vids where they shoot perfectly good helmets with handgun calibers and they bulge. The bullet stops but I think it would still kill you from the energy Would these foam kits protect against this do you think - or does this just make it more comfy...for a lot of money? At the very least I think I will take your advice and get the retention strap and pad. #6 NOD - Will the Parachutists retention straps be enough counter pull if you bolt it to the front or do you really need to make sure you get the extra chin strap? What is it on the MICH or ACH that allows bolting? The 4 point? #7 I have old school googles and no cover but I see the new ones with this weird sock or microfiber bag that keeps them from scratching up and slides around. I see some guys put the goggles right over a NOD. What's different about the new googles? Is it just a strap thing or does it integrate with the new covers? Anyways, that's a bunch of sh#t, sorry. Just this vid got my mind going. I keep all my guns and equipment maintained well and now feel guilty I left this thing rusting in my closet without realizing it. It's not an old steel pot! If I have it, as you said, I should at least maintain it. Excellent vid. Thanks - keep it coming.

Hi and thanks for the comment/questions! 1) There's a link to the pamphlet in the video description; click "Show More" or Google "PASGT Use and Care" and I'm sure the pamphlet will come up somewhere in the search results. 2) Tapping mags ensures the rounds are properly seated in the magazine. I'm sure the helmet can take it (it IS Kevlar lol); mags should be good as well. 3) Everyone spray paints their helmet at some point.. usually happens before turning in your gear when you get out of the military. Painting "snakeskin"/mesh laundry bag camo has become popular due to Special Operations guys doing it, but is rarely authorized for regular units. The military uses a special paint for everything (helmets/radios/trucks) called CARC, or Chemical Agent Resistant Coating-- basically, the paint has other ingredients that are supposed to hold up better should the item ever be exposed to chemical weapons like liquid nerve agent-- and THAT'S what's flaking off in some spots-- CARC can come off in large flakes sometimes. Covering CARC with spray paint will negate its properties, and is frowned upon by many supply sergeants, but who the hell is really worried about running into chem weapons these days anyway?! 4) PASGT and ACH/MICH are same level (3A), which is rated for 9mm submachine gun or less. It WILL stop other things, but it depends on distance/projectile speed/etc.. I guess they got rid of the visor lip to accommodate a wider range of accessories. 5) Some of the earlier foam helmet pads for the ACH/MICH were recalled/replaced because they didn't perform as well as expected. I'm no scientist but I'm sure the newer stuff is probably SLIGHTLY better protection-wise, and a little more comfy.. but for the average joe who's looking for an economical helmet, old-school PASGT will do fine. Getting shot in the head is a bad day no matter what you're wearing. There is a PASGT helmet in a display case at 1-509 BN Headquarters where a guy got shot in Iraq with an AK and the bullet is lodged/bulge in the helmet but the guy lived without serious injury... again, it depends on the speed/distance/etc of the projectile. 6) Nothing is ever really adequate to counter the NODs-- if you wear NODs on your helmet long enough, you'll be pulling/pushing it back up at some point lol. There are special counter-weights you can buy but I wouldn't worry about it unless we're talking quad-NVG like ZeroDarkThirty or some shit. Most of my time in service, I had a PVS-14 (monocular) on a PASGT and it was fine without a counter-weight or the extra chinstrap... PVS-7 (goggles) are heavier though and the extra chinstrap would help. 7) I rock the old-school "Sun/Wind/Dust" goggles... the ones issued with ACH/MICH came from ESS and have a different look. The cover keeps them from getting scratched; keeps sand/etc out of your goggles when not in use; and prevents reflection of light off the goggles, which could give away your position. Make a cover for yours out of an old sock. Everyone focuses on guns like their babies, but other gear gets neglected. Take care of your gear & it will take care of you! I tear down all my gear for inspection/serviceability at least once a year. Hope this helped!

What was the policy for goggles? You airborne guys get the sand wind dust goggles or was that just vehicle crewmen? Awesome videos by the way. Great attention to detail that pretty much everyone lacks with this stuff.

goggles were whatever you had or were issued-- as much as the Army likes to have everyone looking the same, my time on active duty (2004-2008) was a clusterfuck as far as gear was concerned. Army adopted UCP/ACU in 2004 but a LOT of people/units, including me, didn't get ACU stuff until late 2006 (priority went to units deploying right away)... I also served in 3 different units in 3 years, so SOP always changed. Some of our guys wore PASGT helmets & Sun/Wind/Dust goggles; other guys had ACH's with the ESS ones... I rocked both :) Everyone had IBA armor though; only time I wore PASGT vest was in Basic, although there were plenty of non-combat units that had PASGT vests, even in theater! Nobody wore goggles much; only times I ever wore them were in the gunner's hatch of a Humvee. Nothing is allowed to be worn on the helmet during an airborne operation though... the only thing allowed on helmets for a jump was a NVG mount (attached directly to helmet with long screw; no cinch-mount), and for the jump, it had to be covered with 100mph tape, so that the suspension lines couldn't snag or wear against it (nobody jumps with NODs mounted; your PVS-14 would be worn on a lanyard around your neck & tucked into your BDU/ACU top.. once you get to the ground, tear the tape off & mount your NVGs to helmet). Thanks for the comments; hope this helps!

Thanks man. I bet you guys hated seeing the BDUs go out the door. No clue what the Army was thinking with UCP. Same with the Air Force and the ABU.
@silenthunder85
@silenthunder85 10 жыл бұрын
Brandon Squires totally. Multicam was the clear winner (popularly) among several other patterns in 2004, but UCP got chosen. Then AF got the ABU; then Navy went with that horrible blue digital. It all started with USMC & Marpat; everyone wanted to be different... and USMC got the idea from CADPAT, so I blame Canada :D Last I heard, ALL branches will be going to Multicam some time in the near future (just like all branches had BDU/M81 Woodland-- my favorite lol). The Army alone has wasted 10+ billion on ACU uniforms/gear; I wonder how much that figure rises when you count the other branches' individual camo patterns... truly maddening.

Gotta love the higher ups and Natick labs ignoring the feedback of the guys who get to get shot at. I'm sure youve heard the horror stories about guys rattle canning a layer of OD onto their UCP in the field.

Now you can get an internal pad system that makes this helmet a lot more comfortable and modern than it was with the WW2-Korea-Vietnam type web suspension inside.

docback63 Depends on who you ask.I like the older version.Feels more comfortable to me.The pad system is nice, but it can trap heat so they get hot and when it's cold they get hard and makes it feel uncomfortable.

I have some questions. Are you still in the military? If so, can a soldier use ALICE gear opposed to the T-850 gear that one is issued?
@silenthunder85
@silenthunder85 9 жыл бұрын
+Steven Perez No longer in the military, and it depends on the chain of command: MOLLE is standard-issue, but some commanders are ok with soldiers using ALICE rucks on ruckmarches and the like. Even National Guard & Reserve units have MOLLE now; the last place I saw ALICE gear used in any official capacity was ROTC units, and even that was a couple years ago. And it's TA-50; the "TA" stands for "Table of Allowances". :)
