Matt, You are on the right track with your stick control. However, I think most people’s reaction when grabbing a cane would be to twist and wrench it out of your hands rather than pull straight. Then, it becomes a matter of hand placement. This is not dogma, it is physics (leverage). As Gary Owen says below, if you grab outside, you have more leverage than someone grabbing on the inside, so the ends of the cane are the best places to retain leverage. You can have fun working this out. One reason the pommel on Euronpean swords is oddly shaped was to keep the sword from being easily controlled by an opponent’s grab during close combat. The cane’s hook is a good weapon, but parts of it are control points that can can become a vulnerabilities when fighting for control of the cane. All weapons have vulnerabilities, but knowing what they are lets’s one turn weaknesses into advantages whether through developing countering skills or weapon design tweaks.. You can work that out too. The secondary control position is the exact center of the stick. I’ll let you explore why that is too. Have fun! Good luck!

Sharpie magic marker, in the "V" of my scrub top, or top shirt pocket, places an impact weapon, somewhere other then the waist, for quicker access, I've tried to break it, and I can't, concentrates the force of your hammer blows into a very small area and it's just a Sharpie. It can be carried into places that preclude your Leatherman, knifes, yawara/koppo/kubaton, and they make a highlighter version, to go along with your heavy, hard bound annotated book ;). You probably already know about this, but just in case. Thank you for your efforts on our behalf, I'm learning allot. Regards, Jim

Recently revisiting my old friend Cane due to mobility issues, again. Used one in my early 20s due to a knee injury. 40 years later it becoming part of my EDC again. I have my CCW. I carry a karambit, weak side, in case of a "gun grab". CQC it will distract and weaken them with damage to tendons, arteries. Escalate to eyes, belly, or throat if they stay in close. Now the cane will ideally keep them at "greater than arms length" and avoiding knife or firearm.

A cop a new back in the 1970s showed me a move with a pen. He put it up under my jawline and pushed.. there is a nerve under there doesn't take much pressure. Not only did it caused me so much pain I crumpled.. my jaw nerve hurt for over a week.! You jab somebody just under the jaw on the left or right side into that nerve I guarantee you it's going to have unbelievable effect

I am going to have to add a note of caution on this one - from my own direct experience. If your attacker has the wider grip - i.e. his hands are on either end, and your hands are trapped in the middle. If this is the case then he definitely has the advantage of leverage. Add the fact that he may be much bigger and stronger than you, then you are potentially in big trouble. Particularly if you are an older person who is not so strong or as fit as you were, a large powerful man grabbing the cane with both hands at either end could be your Waterloo. I recently experience this problem while practicing this technique. My opponent naturally grabbed the tip and the crook end for leverage, leaving my hands in the middle. within a few seconds of being thrown around I reacted instinctively. I let go of the cane with my right hand completely and placed my thumb against his eyeball. That worked a treat. There was no other choice than to abandon the stick. I could not win and had no leverage, I tried as hard as I could to make the stick go vertical but he was too strong. So in that situation I would recommend letting go of the stick with one hand, and immediately attacking the eye or the throat. I also felt a knee kick was an option which would have worked nicely. So here is my alternative title "Don't let the bad guy take your walking cane - Give it to him while you poke his eye, shut off his breathing and break his leg" ;)

Yes, these are key points. Hand position is not dogma, it is physics (leverage). The stick is not the goal; in self defense, injury is the goal. I'll see if I can post a separate comment elaborating on this.

@@rjtwocircles I think you have hit the nail squarely on the head R.J.! I wish I could have put it so succinctly. But yes the stick is not really the issue. In reality the aim is to deliver a disabling injury. For me that means eyes, throat groin or knees. Best not to get too fixated with getting the cane. A heel kick to the knee was my first instinct but the eye was there... I only had to move my hand a couple of inches... and I'm naturally lazy. It really could not have been easier. Having said that - best not to hesitate or delay - as you are now completely unarmed as he's got a big stick :)

The Kubattons that I carry have a point on one end.. if it's a plastic one with a flat tip I put a little point on it on the grinder... This is to get into certain spots. More effectively just my preference

Nice one - "let 'em have it" could be the club motto ;) Matt, I saw an older dude in the park carrying a Nordic walking pole. Lighter than a cane but very strong and some are telescopic. Also I believe some people would feel more comfortable carrying this. What do you think?...

In developing my own personal daily cane self-defense practice routine, I was thinking about this very subject. Thank you for this video! My personal addendum? While the bad guy is occupied with your cane, just prior to the twist, I'd deliver a fast snap kick to the ding-ding. Nothing quite like focusing their attention on a different area as you recover your cane from their grip.

Matt, there's a martial art movie I think you'll enjoy very much if you like Judo, Jujutsu, Boxing and Sherlock Holmes. It's called Enola Holmes. Its about the baby sister of Sherlock Holmes and her upbringing, her training and her investigating/ searching for her lost mother. Enola Holmes. Google it.

I think it is important not to get too fixated on using any weapon exclusively in a self defence situation. If the hand is handier use that, or the foot, knee, elbow or head, rather than get beaten up while looking for your kubaton. Realistically you are probably only going to get one or two strike opportunities with the cane, against a determined attacker so they need to hit a target and count. Ideally the weapon is just an extension for other martial skills.

Thanks for another great video! While I don't have leg problems, I use a cane for balance. When this sickness came on me, I came to realize how much energy we use just balancing ourselves when we walk. For me, much of the secret of making this work would be in the footwork. Even when I was healthy, I wasn't graceful. I'm not sure how I can train this by myself, but the secret might be in learning to take a step or two towards my opponent without stumbling and falling. When you were testing this technique, were any of the people able to continue using the cane for balance even as they came forward? For me, the secret might be in not only moving forward with the other person's pull but in continuing to put weight on the cane while holding it close to my chest. The person trying to get my cane might find himself not only pulling on the cane but supporting my 270 pounds of weight through the cane. If I can get my feet somewhat stable and just transfer my weight to one of my hands, that side of the cane might suddenly go downwards. That will give the cane a hard twist even if I don't get as much upward push from the other hand. If all of this puts the attacker off-balance, then I won't have to be as effective in the strike to knock the guy down. If I get one of those stretchy bands that you use, maybe that would give me resistance to practice moving into an attacker's pull. I still have a heavy bag in the shop from before I was sick. If I tie it down at the bottom, I might be able to stretch the band a little bit to simulate someone pulling on my cane. Then, I can do the entire strike. This will be more feasible when it gets a little warmer. The heater in the shop isn't very good.

Matt, I love your videos! Your exercises are fun to do, so they get done. You talk repeatedly about situational awareness; yet, isn't an important component of situational awareness not looking like a victim to a predator? As an old man, I feel like I look like an old lame gazelle looks to a lion when I walk around carrying around one of the old-fashioned wooden canes like you demonstrate with. Wouldn't something less debilitating-looking be better, such as a Cold Steel Axe Head Cane? Thanks, Kip

I have a simple walking stick with a knob for the handle. I'm 132 pounds, 61 years old. Most of what you are talking about is read in your bearing by your oppressor. If you do not look scared, they will be. Remember to feel confident, and smile. The day came when I told someone who is at least Mark's size to fuck off, and I walked right on past him. His focus after that was on my walking stick. I merely held it lightly with 2 fingers as I put my groceries into my car. He cursed me, and I wished him a good day before very slowly getting in my car. I also had my tiny 28 pound Boston Terrier with me who exited the car and guarded me while I did this. One whistle and my dog was back in jumping over my lap. The guy didn't know what to make of it. He wanted to kick my ass. I never lost my cool with this man big enough to break me in half. There's been upwards of a 100 people who have complimented me on my stick. About half note how much it would hurt to get hit with it. I have never had to use it. That being said I still do Matt's exercises just in case. I also use a non threatening battle stance that is not seen as a stance that has allowed me to put many on the ground simply by walking into them at the right time. I'll usually hold the arm so they don't hit ground hard, and then immediately state to them if they would like to try that again that the next time is going to hurt, and if they still want to persist afterward that they will be very sorry. 100% of the time they quit without me or them getting hurt. Most of the battle is in the mind.

My stick came with a magnetic boot. The bottom of the cane has a plate held on with 2 screws. The boot flew off one day while practicing, and is now lost somewhere. I taped a new non-magnetic boot on with blue painters tape (makes it look like a notch in the gun). If someone were to grab the end of the stick the boot is likely to come off in their hand after I jerk the end of the stick back to reveal the very sharp edge of the steel plate on the bottom of the stick that'll work like a sharp hammer on anything it came in hard contact with. I'm always wary. Never afraid. 😎
