This video is amazing! My son has a big stick from the back yard and is following along. I told him if he keeps practicing, we will buy him a real bo staff. Watching you is so interesting that I might buy one for myself too 🥳

@pasquinilli I posted your vid. I'm a 40 yr+ martial artist and anytime I walk my dog I use a Kali or fiberglass bostaff to loosen and strengthen my hands, wrists, forearms, etc. Dog leash may grt clipped now and them lol. 66 and a 110lb/106 grip strength while healing a botched trigger finger release shows how staying active with shadow boxing, calisthenics, stretching and "massaging my physical therapists ROCK HARD TRAPS nearly daily keeps me fit. Reading abt grip strength is interesting and gave me some reassurance cuz not training for 6 mos is like taking away a passion. I like the way you display basic techniques to help people actually succeed when they try vs getting frustrated by video that different. Thanks for postings, I'll share anytime!

Matt, so glad to see you and catch class. What you said is so true. Having to get out of the comfort zone to grow. Even as a senior citizen, i still find myself working on the things i enjoy, instead of what i need. But i really appreciate the truth of what you stress. "Don't give up!" As a child, i remember being told "don't lose your temper", when getting upset. I never knew what it meant, until one day i was trying to add strength to a knife, with heat. Besides ruining the finish, i destroyed the blade, because it had "lost its temper."

Thanks for the video! The most painful hit that I've taken recently was a dowel hitting my glasses. There was no physical pain to my body. My glasses ended up being okay, but the fear of having to spend the money on new glasses was terrifying. I've ordered cheap safety glasses to wear for training going forward. They won't be prescription, but I can see enough to train with them. That way, I won't risk breaking my glasses when I make a mistake. I've taken a few painful bo strikes on the shins when I was trying to do spins. I'm still not training as much because I'm moving snow with my limited energy resources. When I can train, the staff stuff is limited by my fingers getting numb. When that happens, I drop things very often.

Great stuff Matt! thanks :) my only humble advice to anyone starting-out: do wear bike-helmet, you will not regret it :) in addition best to start with light bamboo staff then work your way up to heavier more solid one ...

I really enjoyed this lesson ; I am up on my feet and really working on coordination. I also love training with my bo , and yeah I can say that my upper body flexibility is improving ..I am training with a 5' Hickory competition/training staff and I am getting much better with my spinning skills.. My most Painful experience is with a Manrici Gussari ( chain whip .) , and I just " Tapped " my groin as I went to pass the whip between my legs ..Ouch!! Thanks for a great lesson.

While masterjng homemade 'chucks in my high school years, I bruised my elbows to the point I could not pole vault for the track team. 40 years later, I cannot pole vault, but I can operate two sets of 'chucks at the same time.

The Kali stick can work but it takes a lot longer to get the feel for it because it is so much lighter.

Why spin a spear type weapon ? There doesn’t seem to be a power use from spinning. Yeah you got to it near the end….

It has more ways use than just thrusting. Different than a spear. It’s a staff.
