I actually used to repair people's electronic items in LA back in the 1980s and remember that a friend of my dad knew Carol Lawrence (I think they were here personal assistant) and knew she needed something repaired, and so I actually got to go up to her house to repair something of hers and I got to meet her - that was pretty epic!

I don't think that Bob Goulet ever won a single game on Password. He was quite possibly the best baritone ever, but was thick as a brick, full of himself, and troubled in many ways, including alcohol and spousal abuse. And, this episode was just before Bob and Carol got married in 1963. Bob finally cleaned up his act after he married his third wife. Still, a brilliant singer.

I am currently hooked on watching these reruns. It's notable how many times Allen had to wait for the new word to be handed to him (which he always remarked on). Too bad they didn't have a backlog of those word wallets, ready to go. Or another, more professional system.

I think in 1962 at 15/16 they were already more responsible like our 25 year olds. The 15/16 year olds of today still act like 12 year olds in my opinion. They certainly had more responsibilities placed upon them. Today things are easily given and can be ordered with a touch of a button and never having lo leave the couch.

I wonder if they had a very famous ice cream store in Southern California (I think it was natural) called "Baskin-Robbins 31 flavors" as far back as 1962 (?) If so, certainly after the ice cream faux pas, a stretched out "31......" would have probably done the trick. Somebody would have said the plural and Ludden would have either give it to them or did that "form of the word" thingy :-)

voicetube: Not a bad plan, but I do not think the Baskin-Robbins stores were nationwide. I know they were in Freakifornia , but when I have mentioned "31 Flavors" to people in the military service back when, or here on the internet, I get a blank stare or a "Huh?" remark. Secondly: It would have been "buzzed" for the reason mentioned by "Joe Ambrose"'. No hyphenated words.

I thought of one that is relatively (although well-known because of dissemination) local situation that's more current that would work for the word "traffic" ( you may have heard Elon musk talk about it in interviews). The clue would be… Wait a minute 405 would be technically three words so never mind :-) To continue this comment, I just realized you could in an upset & mildly angry way, stretch out the word "Freeway...." (although I don't think they dealt with much traffic back in 1962, even in Los Angeles).

hahaha. they're celebrities. they ALL literally gambled their future on a super slim chance of getting to be idolized and worshiped and envied as a career. all celebrities who aren't born into it are scumbags character-wise and should never be admired for anything. If they cared about the "art" of acting, they've be happy staying in their small town in backwater america and living their "art,: if you want to be the next youtube/tiktok mumble rap star, you're not someone who cares about music, you're someone seeking fame. so sad so many people through the generations have been convinced the dregs of society in hollyweird are worth admiration. especially not today, but way back then at least a lot of them had different careers to start and didn't obsess over fame as their life goal since childhood, which redeems the real old timers a bit. the rest are horrible human beings.

Almost all were and are. They are what passes for "Royalty" in the U.S. of A. (and the pro-Sport types). Allen Ludden was the biggest spoiler of them. Pat-on-the-back / Make nicey, / Puff up their egos/ guy there was. He would insult contestants (often) but kiss-up to the show-bizzies sitting next to him. 😒

This may not have worked for a first clue, but for "Cupid" I'm thinking maybe saying the word "Arrow" but making it a performance (tough without gestures but I think it could be done) - it would consist of first giggling in a high-pitched way with a big smile and then looking into the contestants eyes lovingly and stretching it out, "Aarrrooowwwww" said while batting the eyes and looking a little mischievous & mixed with a little love vibe. Again it might not work, but there's a possibility that it could trigger the right word :-)

That could be a matter of viewpoint, as it were… Many times Ludden allowed for SOME gestures… Especially if they had some character quality etc. Certainly my description above could have easily been something and certainly was that the great Betty White would occasionally explore (successfully many times :-)

I'm looking for more diversity back then. Robert Goulet was a bit touchy here and flirtatious. When I hear how Allen Ludden presents himself. I get why Betty Betty White couldn't resist. He had a charming way about him. He was really excellent on his art of presenting the game. A very good TV host and he would check himself if he was being out of line.

Robert Goulet had a great singing voice. As a Password player,,,,, he was a waste of oxygen. Carol Lawrence was a decent player. For some unknown reason she married Goulet about a year after this episode was aired. {Life lesson: ---> Never marry someone that has to use hand and body gestures in a game called: "Password"! 🙃} For the word "Cupid" I was yelling "Valentine" at my monitor, but they never listen to me... 🤥 Password "Grip" --- clues could have been: "Pliers", "Studs", "Cleats", "Glue", "Handle", "Racquet".
