This is called oxyacetylene welding, or carbide welding. You put carbide into water in a tank (a carbide generator) which causes a reaction producing acetylene. My uncle used to do this in Poland, back in the day. Acetylene is extremely flammable and is commonly used today for welding. Although, the difference is you don't use a carbide generator to get gas. You basically go and buy a pre-filled cylinder.

The same repair had clearly been made to that pipe recently. And will have to be made again soon. A corroded pipe cannot be reliably repaired. This guy is lucky, he got a repeat customer there 😂

My FIRST DAY decades ago working as a body man and car and small truck spray painter I FORGOT my safety glasses 😠😠 ! When using a large sander I got a HOT PIECE OF METAL IN THE CENTER OF MY EYE ! had to drive 45 minutes to E.R. Mpls , MN. , The Dr.numbed my eye , said very seriously LOOK STRANGE GHT AHEAD !😳😳 , he picked the piece of metal out of the center of my eye ! 😱😱 ( It took him many tries ! 😲😲 , NEVER AGAIN without safety glasses AND goggles OR face sheild !
